According to U.S. News and World Reports, the 10 (actually 11) worst Presidents are:

1. James Buchanan (1857-1861)
2. Warren G. Harding (1921-1923)
3. Andrew Johnson (1865-1869)
4. Franklin Pierce (1853-1857)
5. Millard Fillmore (1850-1853)
6. John Tyler (1841-1845)
7. Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1877)
8. William Harrison (1841)
9. (tie) Herbert Hoover (1929-1933)
9. (tie) Richard Nixon (1969-1974)
10. Zachary Taylor (1849-1850)

Now, you can vote as well.  Current results are overwhelming that Bush 43 is the Worst. President. Ever.
1. George W. Bush (79% of voters chose him among their three worst)
2. Richard Nixon (36%)
3. Warren Harding (27%)
4. Ronald Reagan (20%)
5. Jimmy Carter (17%
6. George HW Bush (14%)
7. Bill Clinton (11%)
8. Herbert Hoover (11%)
9. James Buchanan (10%)
10. Lyndon Johnson (6%)

So, who do you think the worst Presidents were in American history?

USA Today Founder Changes Mind, Says "W" Is Worst (PM - 2/20/2007 6:12:31 PM)

Plain Talk by Al Neuharth, USA TODAY founder

Our great country has had 43 presidents. Many very good. A few pretty bad. On Presidents Day next Monday, it's appropriate to commemorate them all.

I remember every president since Herbert Hoover, when I was a grade school kid. He was one of the worst. I've personally met every president since Dwight Eisenhower. He was one of the best.

A year ago I criticized Hillary Clinton for saying "this (Bush) administration will go down in history as one of the worst."

"She's wrong," I wrote. Then I rated these five presidents, in this order, as the worst: Andrew Jackson, James Buchanan, Ulysses Grant, Hoover and Richard Nixon. "It's very unlikely Bush can crack that list," I added.

I was wrong. This is my mea culpa. Not only has Bush cracked that list, but he is planted firmly at the top.

The Iraq war, of course, has become Bush's albatross. He and his buddies are great at coining words or slogans. "Bushisms" that will haunt him historically:

  * "Shock and Awe," early 2003.

  * "Mission Accomplished," May 1, 2003.

  * "Stay the Course," June 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006.

  * "New Strategy," 2007.

Another term historians may weigh critically is "Decider."

Is he just a self-touted decider doing what he thinks right? Or is he an arrogant ruler who doesn't care or consider what the public or Congress believes best for the country?

Despite his play on words and slogans, Bush didn't learn the value or meaning of mea culpa (acknowledgement of an error) during his years at Yale.

Bush admitting his many mistakes on Iraq and ending that fiasco might make many of us forgive, even though we can never forget the terrible toll in lives and dollars.

Arrogant, check. Doesn't care, check. (Lowell - 2/20/2007 6:30:08 PM)
Incompetent, check. Worst President ever, check.  Ugh.

I'll take the long view and say (thegools - 2/20/2007 6:56:58 PM)
James Buchanan was worst.  As much as many think GWB is a real stinker, there are few who can compare with the incopetence  of Buchanan and the magnitude of the aftermath that resulted from that incompetence.

Bush is easily in the top ten worst, and is certainly the worst living one, but he is not number one.......

I respectfully disagree (snolan - 2/21/2007 9:05:42 AM)
Buchanan was incompetent, but I wish Bush was merely incompetent.  In truth he is enormously successful at representing his true constituent's special interests - and destroying the planet.

As unpopular as Iraq is now, in 50 or 100 years Iraq will seem like a paltry mistake compared to the damage done to the planet's environment by the current administration.

Worst President Ever goes to Bush hands down with no competition whatsoever.  Most of the bad-boys on their list have some redeeming traits... and while I agree that Buchanan lacks redeeming traits, he has not done anywhere near as much permanent damage to his country or the planet.

The Legacy of bush (norman swingvoter - 2/20/2007 9:36:17 PM)
All this talk has started me looking at the Presidents during my life.  It is scary but bush is the 11th US President during my lifetime.  I can't say about the Presidents before me but I definitely will call bush the absolute worst US President and the most destructive US President during my lifetime.  In Matthew 7 there are some good verses to judge Presidents by.  "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit...by their fruit you will recognize them."  Let's look at the fruit of the bush administration.  We currently have 2 ongoing wars that have been completely bungled. We have roughly 30,000 casualites and $800,000,000,000 spent.  The bush administration has sold out the very foundations on which this country is based.  Due to arrogance and incompetence, bush has pretty much destroyed our reputation worldwide.  This is one hell of a legacy for him to leave behind and it's going to take a long time to get us back on track because of his bad decisions.

That's not just BAD fruit... (Lowell - 2/21/2007 7:26:33 AM)
...it's ROTTEN to the core!

Bush vs. Buchanan (Kindler - 2/20/2007 11:56:07 PM)
I must agree that Bush is the worst president in my lifetime and the worst since Herbert Hoover (at least).

I would love to declare Bush the worst ever but I have to agree with U.S. News and the gools that James Buchanan is a tough guy to beat.  The Civil War was the most awful hell the United States has ever experienced and that dildo spent 4 years just watching the country slide into chaos.

If global warming truly leads to the worst-case scenarios that have been envisioned, however, the world may well remember Dubya as the world's leading stumbling block to action when we still had a chance.  In which case, Buchanan may be dethroned after all.

For now, I put Bush in a close contest (Lowell - 2/21/2007 7:28:03 AM)
with Buchanan. I mean, Buchanan almost destroyed the nation, but Bush...well, he's working on destroying the entire planet!  Heckuva job.

Bush part deux! (Turning VA Blue - 2/21/2007 11:24:48 AM)
George W. Bush has managed to tarnish all that is America, he has permitted the just about entire world to see America us bullies rather than a civilized diplomatic nation.  Thus, in my opinion, making him the him the worst president EVER.

Here are ten more reasons - off the top of my head:
1. He stole the 2000 election.
2. He continually hijacks our Constitution.
3. He tramples over civil liberties daily.
4. He does not listen to the American people no matter how loud we scream - I suppose that plays in to hijacking the Constitution, as it is "We the people!"
5. He butchers the English language
6. He has no remorse for the number of human lives lost in the Iraq war.  He wants to send more troops in harms way with no damn plan.
7.  He could care less about making sure Americans are healthy - that is unless corporations get more tax breaks.
8. He doles out tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations and places the largest tax burden on the eroding middle class.
9. He created the largest deficit in American history!
10.  He is an arrogant ass.

I could go on, but the point is made.

George W. Bush is the worst President in the history of the United States of America.

From early December... (Eric - 2/21/2007 12:52:29 PM)
I had a post on this subject a few months back based on the WAPO Outlook section.  Here are links to those articles for reference...

Time's On His Side (Vincent J. Cannato)
Move Over, Hoover (Douglas Brinkley)
He's Only Fifth Worst (Michael Lind)
He's The Worst Ever (Eric Foner)

It is interesting to note in the U.S. News survey that all our recent Presidents are ranked among the top of worst ever.  Wow - our nation must be going through it's worst half century ever.  Or, more likely, people were just sleeping through history class.

77% for Bush 43 (kevinceckowski - 2/21/2007 7:23:45 PM)
so far.  Let's see could it be the War in Iraq, global warming, no child left behind, Plamegate, high oil prices, lost money to Halliburton, et al, no tax left behind for the rich, immigration?..........the list seems endless why he is breaking over 77% as of a minute ago.
