I received a copy of the following letter from the UVA-Wise Young Democrats and Young Republicans, urging Jerry Kilgore to reconsider his rejection of a debate invitation by the two groups.  Tim Kaine and Russ Potts have accepted (of course), and Jerry Kilgore has declined (of course), the debate at Kilgore's own alma mater.  Pitiful, but not exactly a big surprise.  Anyway, here's the letter.  Also, click here for the full PDF version.

Dear Mr. Kilgore,

The University of Virginia's College at Wise's two youthful political organizations issued invitations to the three candidates for governor to conduct a forum debate on campus during the fall campaign.

Lieutenant Governor Tim Kaine and Senator Russ Potts have agreed to participate.  Nonetheless, we wanted to gain your input and participation before endeavoring to set a date at what is your alma mater.  We want and need your acceptance no later than September 15th.

If we fail to hear from your campaign, the Young Democrats and Young Republicans will proceed with the debate between Lieutenant Governor Kaine and Senator Potts prior to election day, since they both accepted.

In Jeffersonian tradition, we especially want to have your participation on the campus of your alma mater.  It is important that southwestern Virginia voters have a similar chance to see and hear the candidates as those in other regions.

Sincerely,

Stephen C. Gustafson

Wow.  You know, it's not often that a candidate for Governor of Virginia manages to "dis" the Young Republicans, the Young Democrats, his own alma mater, and the citizens of his home region of the state in one fell swoop.  But that's what Jerry Kilgore seems determined to do here.  Must be because he "trusts the people."  Heh.
