How's that "Global War on Terror" (GWOT) Going?

Not too well, according to an article ("Al Qaeda Chiefs Are Seen to Regain Power") in today's New York Times.  According to the article:

American officials said there was mounting evidence that Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, had been steadily building an operations hub in the mountainous Pakistani tribal area of North Waziristan. Until recently, the Bush administration had described Mr. bin Laden and Mr. Zawahri as detached from their followers and cut off from operational control of Al Qaeda.

You think this might have something to do with the fact that we're bogged down and distracted in Iraq instead of focusing on the group that attacked us on 9/11?  Or is this just another "heckuva job" by the Bush Administration?  Either way, it sucks.

Reasons why they don't care? (Rebecca - 2/19/2007 11:52:04 AM)
There could be many reasons why the administration doesn't care about this. I'm not saying any of these are the real reasons, but there has to be a reason or reasons why this is of no concern to the administration.

1. The most obvious might be that the admin doesn't care about the American people. They only are interested in using fear to consolidate their power.

2. Pakistan is helping military contractors make money. Perhaps they are offering cover for illegal trading in the obvious commodities (drugs, arms, etc.)

3. They know Osama had nothing to do with 9/11.

4. Without Osama it would be harder to sell the fear factor to justify more wars. Therefore it helps war profiteers to have Osama around.

5. Bush wants to keep going on family vacations with the Bin Ladens since they are good friends.

-Just speculation, of course.

The other factor that should alarm people if indeed Osama if the president of terrorists is that Pakistan has the bomb. Obviously this is of no concern to the Bush administration.

Why not (Teddy - 2/19/2007 1:21:01 PM)
agree that all of Rebecca's reasons are entirely possible, maybe all of them together.

Then there is the basic incompetence of Republican non-governance philosophy. The true power does not lie with the President in this (or any other likely Republican-dominated) Administration, despite the cocky "I am the Decider" statements. Any really important decision trickles down from the faceless corporate leadership, who, even if they are actually American citizens still, have no worries about America's future since they are now international, with international interests, homes, and with personal fortunes held abroad.  True to the Republican business philosophy, they care only about their own bottom line. Never was it truer: Follow the Money.
