Signs on Steroids

Is bigger really better?

While on a leasurely drive through residential Vienna this past weekend, I couldn't help but notice Jerry Kilgore's latest marketing effort - giant yard signs.  I'm not talking big signs.  These things are huge!  Somewhere around 5 feet, yes FEET, across.  You can't miss them, and I suppose that's the point.

Well that got me thinking "is this a good thing"?  I came up with two answers...

First answer: Its a great thing if you support Jerry.  These massive signs completely emasculate Tim Kaine's puny counterattack.  You can't miss Jerrys' signs and if you do see a Tim Kaine sign it just looks pathetic.  I'm talking high school varsity football team vs. the chess club.  Except this chess club doesn't even have an intellectual advantage.

Second answer:  if the Kaine crew, who are paid to do battle with Jerry's team, are on top of things, they'll be putting their signs on a steroid program that would make any baseball player proud.  So this will turn into a true manly challenge - who's got a bigger, um, sign.  This is a very very bad thing.  Hate it.  I've already encountered a few door knockers and robocalls.  And it's going to get worse.  Much worse.  We will be pounded by phone calls, personal calls, robocalls, and call surveys.  There will be postcards and fliers with no  fold, single fold, bi-fold, tri-fold until they get old.  And then they'll really get started.  So an escalation in the sign battle will be yet another annoyance we, the good citizens of Virginia, will be subjected to over the next two months.

For now, though, hats off to Jerry Kilgore and his self-promotion efforts.  And thanks so much for making my life and everyone else's that much less tolerable for the next two months.

Ron, you rock, but I have to correct you on this.

Tim Kaine has 4x8 signs too.  Furthermore, these and yard signs can be requested from the website.  These are for use in local areas all across VA - not just events.

I think you just had a bad commute.

Come to my neck of the woods and I will show you a sign!

As far as signs "getting out of control", yard signs and bumper stickers for that matter, are just a way normal peeps like me can show our support to our community.

Kaine signs just make me smile - shows me I have friends I did not know I had.

That's a good thing!

I've seen several huge Kaine signs out and about as well, so don't overreact because you saw one giant Kilgore sign.  I've been to some county fairs and street festivals where the Kaine campaign's signs trounced Kilgore's, so I think the "Kaine Crew" is doing their job, and doing it well.

I saw a pair on a ba (Alex - 4/4/2006 11:27:56 PM)
I saw a pair on a barn in either Faquier or Loudon county on 15 south this weekend.  They're huge, but Kaine has a few out there himself, including one in Caroline county on either 301 or 207 south (I can't remember if it's before or after Bowling Green).
