Police notes: Wardrup used position to avoid ticket

State Del. Leo Wardrup tried to use his legislative office to avoid a traffic ticket after running a red light and causing an accident in October 2005, according to police e-mails and memos released Thursday....

A memo written by Police Lt. J.T. Orr to his superior, Capt. Steven Smith, on Oct. 11, 2005 - the day after the accident - described what happened....

"When we approached Mr. Wardrup to actually issue the summons," Orr wrote, "he very politely explained that he was not refusing to sign it, but that he was currently under the protection of state code section 30-5 which in effect made him immune from prosecution in connection with his charge."

Based on Wardrup's claim, Michal and Orr decided not to issue the traffic summons, but instead to note on the accident report that Wardrup was at fault.

Michal then gave Wardrup a ride to his home on Sunvista Drive.

How many of you get to cause a traffic accident and then (1) avoid a traffic ticket due to a career wholly irrelevant to your negligent behavior and then (2) get a ride home from the cops! Nice work if you can get it.

Now, Waldrup is basically calling the officers liars despite their official reports.  Topping off his disrespect for the law with a little disrespect for law enforcement.
