Draft Mark Warner For U.S. Senate

Recently, with good reason there has been a lot of speculation on what exactly Governor Mark Warner will do in 2008 or 2009.

A few weeks ago most of the press picked up the story that something was floating around about Mark Warner jumping back in the Presidential race.

Of course that story was just hearsay. Again here recently on Raising Kaine I read Vivian Paige wrote that Mark Warner wont be a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2008.

Although he won't remember, in the final GOTV rally he and Governor Tim Kaine held for Jim Webb before the election I asked him if he was thinking about running for Senate in 2008.
I didn't get a verbal reply, but a nice grin and smile when I presented the notion.

No one can confirm exactly what Mark Warner will do, but he has made it clear that he has many more campaigns left in him.

Here is what Warner spokesman Lars Anderson said when asked by the AP about Warner's VP ambitions:

"He still wants to be part of fixing America's problems," Anderson said. "He's looking at several different options for connecting the dots between things like fixing the nation's health care system, global warming, national security (and) job creation."

Several different options? Sounds like Mark Warner is still trying to decide how he can best contribute to this country and our future.

I believe serving in the U.S. Senate for Virginia is a great way to continue his dedicated service to this country and this commonwealth.

So I will ask you fellow Virginians to join me and help start this draft movement to urge Governor Mark Warner that we are still behind him and we want him to represent us in Washington.

Sign the petition. Let Mark Warner know how you feel.

Mark Warner.. (drmontoya - 2/14/2007 10:04:39 PM)
Is the best person who can beat John Warner in 2008, now let's Draft another winning candidate for '08!

Warner Vs Warner ???? (Used2Bneutral - 2/15/2007 12:39:34 AM)
It's gonna look like a father/Son feud :)

I'm guessing (Chris Guy - 2/15/2007 2:05:39 AM)
you weren't around in 1996?

I was abducted by Silicon Valley aliens for a few years back then (Used2Bneutral - 2/15/2007 4:06:22 AM)
So now that you point it out, I remember, but even back then we were trying to do pre-damage control from the sweep that hit both houses going GOP over what turned out to be stupid issues.

Deja vu 1996? (thegools - 2/15/2007 2:11:38 AM)
Only now people know and like Mark Warner.

I think he would be a great for Senator or Governor (part2).

Mark Warner (Gordie - 2/15/2007 8:28:39 AM)
For Senate and VP. When he wins both, then Kaine can appoint the Democratic Senator.

Hmmmmm (daninarlington - 2/15/2007 9:00:12 AM)
That position for Joe Lieberman in 2000 was the first thing that made me dislike him.

Gov. (Adam Malle - 2/15/2007 8:35:37 AM)
I would prefer to see him as vp poised for president in 2016, or another run for governor in 09'. IMO Warner is the type who is best in a managerial position like governor president. Working in the senate in a group would not be the ideal position for him. I will support any choice he makes.

I worry a little.... (daninarlington - 2/15/2007 8:58:54 AM)
Who is on our bench for Gov in 09 if M Warner takes Senate or VP in 08?

I do like Warner a lot, and I want to see him back in Govt..... but I'd almost rather have him in the VA Gov'ship than Senate. In '08, we will have 51+ Senate D's, I think that's vritually a given at this point. I could care less about J Warner going back or not, until 08 he is effectively neutered, and if he is reelected in 08, he'll stdill be in the minority.

If Warner doesn't run for Gov in 09, who will? I like Leslie Byrne, but Va showed itself unready for her in 05. I like Creigh Deeds, but he couldn't muster enough to win attorney gen in 05, and his name isn't in the media (Outside RK).

I don't know about you all, but if Warner isn't running for Prez in 08, I'd rather see him as Gov in 09. Put Webb in for VP in 08 (with Obama) and let Kaine pick the new Senator (Deeds or Byrne or Beyer?) and then let Warner be Gov again in 09.....

Maybe Brian Moran.... (ericy - 2/15/2007 10:18:08 AM)

Jim's brother.

All good choices (chiefsjen - 2/15/2007 10:43:25 AM)
I adore Mark Warner and worked on draftmarkwarner.com for president -- he does have a wide open future and still wants to be involved -- i'd most like to see him as a VP candidate and then moving into the pres spot.  i think if he does the gov or senate thing his chances of running/being pres drop dramatically.

Not happening (Ghost of A.L. Philpott - 2/15/2007 1:43:02 PM)
Mark Warner is not running for Senate in 2008 regardless of an online petition or smiling when asked 2 years ago. He's said in the past he has no interest in running for Senate and being in a legislative body does not fit his bill, nor use his political talents to anywhere near their potential.

I love Warner, but he's destined to run for Governor again in 2009, or test the waters and see if anyone picks at him as a #2 on an '08 ticket.

Unless your Mark Warner.. (drmontoya - 2/15/2007 2:15:16 PM)
Or can provide evidence he's not interested, then it's all hearsay.

A lot of people are coy about their intentions of futures offices. However, this draft is intended to convince Mark Warner that we want him to run for US Senate.

I think the people deserve a voice in this matter, if we want him to represent us I think that says a lot about the impact he has in Virginia.

I cannot reveal... (Ghost of A.L. Philpott - 2/15/2007 2:32:31 PM)
...whether or not I am Mark Warner. Of course its hearsay! Better than the ongoing Gore'08 "debate" though.

Honestly though, look at the situation before throwing a popular ex-gov. into any open or semi-contestable political office. Warner's abilities would be wasted in the Senate for the most pat. His rise to political excellence came from making executive decisions, and should continue there be it in Richmond in '09 or as Veep '08.

. (Ghost of A.L. Philpott - 2/15/2007 2:36:50 PM)
I don't really need to be our former Governor(I may be, I may just be a regular guy named Mark Warner) to make an educated, and confident prediction about MW's future political aspirations.

One time I asked (Draft Me Please - 2/15/2007 3:02:18 PM)
Gerald Baliles if he wanted to run for Senate in 2008 and he too grinned at me! And since I like him and want him to represent me, I think I'm going to start a draft movement! DRAFT BALILES FOR SENATE '08, BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE HIM AND HE WAS A GOOD GOVERNOR A WHILE AGO!!

If you feel passionately about it.. (drmontoya - 2/15/2007 4:47:05 PM)
Start a draft.. whoever you are. =)

Best Pick for 2008 (Joby - 2/15/2007 11:08:06 PM)
Don Beyer!

Why? Because he's...Intelligent, Compassionate, Rational, Visonary, Progressive, Pragmatic, Egalitarian, Leader, Loyal, and Moral

If Mark says no (Chris Guy - 2/15/2007 11:14:28 PM)
You could do a lot worse than Don Beyer.

If MW wants to run for Governor in '09, I hope Brian Moran or Creigh Deeds focus their attention elsewhere. I think Deeds would be a great candidate for Senator. Brian could go for Lt. Governor or AG.

If Mark says no (in 2008) (Joby - 2/15/2007 11:21:22 PM)
Warner - Deeds- Moran or Warner - Moran - Deeds would both make strong tickets in 2009
