Fight Global Warming & Oppose Electric Utility Self Regulation!
Write your Senator and Delegate Today!

Dominion Virginia Power is pushing legislation in Virginia that would guarantee Dominion unprecedented profits and limit oversight. They are calling it "re-regulation".

HB 3068 and SB 1416 will make Virginians spend billions of dollars in inefficient energy production before we invest in energy conservation - the cleanest and cheapest way to a long term energy solution.

These re-regulation plans ignore global warming, and actually reward Dominion for building more dirty coal-fired power plants that use obsolete technology...

Thanks.

I have been against the new electric rates for Appalachian Power and have been emailing the State Corporations Commission and AEP.

My bills have gone up 42 percent, yet AEP reps. have said they only applied for 23, 25, 30, percent increases.

The SCC said my complaints should have been in by November 7, 2006, now they are not part of the record.

All the Government agencies say that SCC is private and they have no influence?

I will have to check into the bills you wrote about.

Thanks for bringing this up (Hugo Estrada - 2/9/2007 10:16:11 AM)
Utility de-regulation is something that I strongly oppose. I still remember how one day I opened the San Francisco Chronicle to learn that Sacramento had de-regularized the utility sector in California. I wasn't there when the big energy crisis happened, but I followed it closely.

How do I access the the text of the bills? I want to send them to family members living in Virginia together with a link to this entry.

Dominion's Pollution Problem (Walker - 2/9/2007 11:34:49 AM)
I have mentioned before how much Dominion affects Virginia's impact on global warming, but it certainly warrants repeating.

Dominion is the 20th largest polluter on the S&P 500, emitting roughly 33 million metric tons of carbon annually.  To give you some context, if Dominion were a country it would rank 34th in the world in terms of pollution! Other corporations are taking steps to limit their negative impact on the environment, so why is Dominion taking actions to make things worse?

Another facet of this debate is Dominion's plan bring more pollution to Virginia by building a 40-mile stretch of 15-story power transmission towers.  This stretch of towers would be used to ship electricity from dirty coal-fired plants in the Midwest, that fail EPA air standards, through Virginia and up to the Northeast.  This plan is purely to increase Dominion's profits and not to meet a supposed energy shortage as they claim. In addition, Virginia ranks in the bottom ten states in regards to efficient use of energy yet Dominion would rather profit off these power towers rather than encourage smart use of energy.

My organization, Virginians for Sensible Energy Policies (VSEP),is demanding this terrible project be stopped.  We are also advocating for Dominion power to seek energy alternatives and the state of Virginia to adopt policies that encourage energy efficiency.  Please take a look at our website to learn more and help out if you can.  Thanks.
