Virginian-Pilot: "Rerras out of order on judge interview"

Check out the editorial in today's Virginian-Pilot on State Sen. Nick Rerras (R-Norfolk), who recently left a candidate for a Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court judgeship - Mary G. Commander - "shocked, offended and embarrassed."  The editorial by Rerras' hometown newspaper is scathing:

Rerras deserves all the scolding he's gotten by making remarks that suggest he applies a litmus test for Norfolk judges. Regardless of their personal views on abortion, domestic violence or other issues, Rerras should insist his nominees follow the law scrupulously, not free lance it from the bench to curry political favor. Lawmaking is Rerras' job, not the judges he appoints.

[...]

...Rerras acknowledged that he inquired about Commander's position on abortion, and that he "probably used the word 'FemiNazi' but it was not directed at anyone." That admission alone raises unflattering questions about his attitude toward women who hold views contrary to his own.

Ouch.  Read the entire editorial here.

I agree with the Pilot! (Turning VA Blue - 2/8/2007 1:30:54 PM)
Furthermore, as Ms. Commander, I am shocked, offended and embarrassed, not because I was subjected to the horrid treatment she had to endure during her interview, but because I have misogynistic representation in the Virginia Senate.

He is truly inadequate as a legislator, leader. (jbkenley - 2/8/2007 2:03:47 PM)
"Rerras out of order on judge interview"
Rerras lack of understanding of the democratic principles, laws of governing, is apparent as are his antiquated and poorly informed biases regarding health and mental health, disease prevention, and reproductive health. He certainly impedes progress and enlightenment. He is truly inadequate as a legislator, leader.

"Senator Rerras, you not only owe Ms. Commander an apology, you owe all the citizens of the Commonwealth an apology, and a resignation."
