John Warner Was For It Before He Was Against It Before He Was...

I'm talking, of course, about Virginia's senior Senator and the troop surge/escalation/"augmentation" in Iraq.  It seems that John Warner can't make up his mind what to do - or what to think - here.  According to the Daily Press:

Two days after voting to block action on his resolution opposing a troop surge in Iraq, Sen. John Warner of Virginia reversed course late Wednesday by threatening to attach his measure to any applicable bill pending in the Senate.

The about-face came after war critics attacked Warner for allegedly abandoning his stand against President Bush's plan to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq.

The Daily Press article also makes extensive mention of a new TV ad by Moveon.org that targets, among others, John Warner.  According to the Daily  Press, "On Wednesday, the liberal lobby MoveOn.org launched a low-budget TV attack ad against Warner on Richmond and Washington, D.C., stations."  Soon thereafter, Warner reversed course.  Fascinating coincidence, ain't it?  Or did new facts just come in from Iraq yesterday that fundamentally altered John Warner's view of the "surge?"  Hmmmmm.

To sum it all up, John Warner was FOR the troops surge before he was AGAINST the troops surge before he was FOR it again before he was AGAINST it again.  Geting dizzy yet?  Feeling a bit nauseated?  Barf.

Getting dizzier.... (Dianne - 2/8/2007 8:29:57 AM)
Here's the latest from the morning's WaPo:
Senate Republicans who earlier this week helped block deliberations on a resolution opposing President Bush's new troop deployments in Iraq changed course yesterday and vowed to use every tactic at their disposal to ensure a full and open debate.

In a letter distributed yesterday evening to Senate leaders, John W. Warner (Va.), Chuck Hagel (Neb.) and five other GOP supporters of the resolution threatened to attach their measure to any bill sent to the floor in the coming weeks. Noting that the war is the "most pressing issue of our time," the senators declared: "We will explore all of our options under the Senate procedures and practices to ensure a full and open debate."

Flip-flop is not just a rubber sandal (Silver Fox - 2/8/2007 8:47:42 AM)
Warner and Hagel and all the other Republicans who signed on to the "procedural" vote to deny cloture should  have a group picture taken wearing flip-flops along with the natty suits they wear when appearing on the Senate floor.  The American people did not send these Senators to Washington to put "procedural" votes above substantive, vital measures.  We are TIRED of Senators who let partisan politics take precedence over the vital interests of our nation.  And threatening to attach the resolution to other legislation won't obscure or make up for the shameful fact that these men and women shirked their responsibility to work to resolve the issues that are so vexing our nation as a whole.  Shame on them.

"Rubber Sandal" - Priceless! (cycle12 - 2/8/2007 9:58:44 AM)
John Warner - Worthless!

Thanks!

I grow to.. (Terry85 - 2/8/2007 9:03:55 AM)
loathe John Warner with each passing MINUTE.  I've held out saying it until now out of a slight respect, but the man is insane.

Voter pressure perhaps? (Hugo Estrada - 2/8/2007 10:23:12 AM)
Maybe Warner thought that no one would pay attention to a procedural vote. Maybe he thought that the scrutiny of engaged citizens was going to end with the last election cycle.

From what other people said in this blog, it seems that the phone lines were busy at Warner's office.

Besides, it saddens me to say this because it shows my eroding respect for Warner, but Warner, Hagel, and the "moderate Republican" gang are really good at giving a good media show, but poor to follow through with action.

Until a vote proves it wrong, Warner is still showing more loyalty to party leaders than to Virginia or his own public statements.

This means that we should keep the pressure on him. Politely thank him for his public stand, and make it clear that we are keeping an eye on his actual votes.

You know what really makes me mad about this whole thing (Terry85 - 2/8/2007 10:34:29 AM)
The media ISN'T telling the full story!!  I was watching the local news this morning, and last night, and noticed that they're reporting only 50% of what's REALLY going on.  They report that Warner proposed the non-binding resolution, Republicans blocked debate, and Warner got mad and fired off a letter saying he'll block legislation until debate on Iraq is allowed.  They conveniently leave out the part about how Warner and his six fellow degenerates-in-stupidity voted AGAINST the debate in the first place!

Typical media narrative (Hugo Estrada - 2/8/2007 10:40:22 AM)
Of course they cannot say that he voted against debating his own bill because Warner plays the role of "moderate" or "maverick" Republican. Bringing attention to his vote would destroy this narrative role.

It's bad journalism... (Terry85 - 2/8/2007 11:15:29 AM)
I just sent an email to the network responsible (WTVR CBS 6 asking them to please report the FULL story, especially if they're going to promote themselves under the guise of "first-fair-everywhere."  If anyone else is interested the only contact address listed on the site is newstips@wtvr.com

another priceless contribution to this discussion

John Warner, dissapoints (drmontoya - 2/8/2007 12:57:43 PM)
I thought of all Republicans he would follow through with his own beliefs.

I am seriously dissapointed.

Just sad (DanG - 2/8/2007 1:05:01 PM)
Watching this struggle between Warner's beliefs and Warner's political obligations is just sad.

Tool (totallynext - 2/8/2007 6:42:08 PM)
He is just a tool for McConnell the weasel - end of story.

Hey levin next time say - go away Warner - you cannot be trusted you undermind your own words.

Weasel, Tool, Weasel, Tool, Weasel, Tool.

What Mark Warner Must do, .. (adilla - 2/8/2007 7:35:05 PM)
something similar to what Gov. Corzine did:

1. Run For the Senate (and win!)

2. Serve Two Years

3. Run for Governor again (and win!)

4. Appoint Kaine as his successor in the Senate!

Unfortunately... (Lowell - 2/8/2007 8:45:52 PM)
see this.  Ugh.
