Congratulations to Harris Miller

According to InsideHigherEd.com, former Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Harris Miller has been named the new president and chief executive of the Career College Association, "the country's main association of for-profit and career-oriented colleges."  In the article, it sounds like Miller is excited about his new job:

"I threw 80 things at them I wanted to do in the first 100 days," he said of his new staff.

Also, this sounds like a long-term gig for Miller:

..."we weren't hiring for a two-year window," said Tolbert, the group's board chairman, noting that the political landscape could be reshuffled again in November 2008.

Anyway, sounds like a great job for Harris Miller, and I wish him well.  Now, what's George Allen up to these days?

Lets see what he does at the CCA (relawson - 2/6/2007 8:17:31 AM)
As long as Harris Miller isn't lobbying for more H-1b visas (workers to exploit) and tax breaks for companies that offshore, I am happy for him.

He has a long road ahead if he is to repair his reputation that he tarnished at the ITAA.  The CCA is a group representing for profit colleges, so he has an window of opportunity to actually do some good.  I hope he takes it.

You can do so much more politically when you don't have thousands of people working against you who also happen to have your image on a dart board.  I think he could have been much more effective at the ITAA and advanced the industry further when it comes to issues of innovation.  Instead, he focused on labor arbitrage issues.  He did make advances there, doing permanent damage to our occupation.

Is Harris Miller atoning for what he did at the ITAA or is he on the same anti-worker path?  We can only hope he has changed his ways.  Time will tell.

Education (Teddy - 2/6/2007 12:38:32 PM)
was Mr. Miller's answer to outsourcing during the campaign. He maintained strongly that the American education system was antiquated and did not meet the challenges of globalisation.  So, maybe this is for real, and we can now see if he really does bring the changes he advocated as being the answer to the labor arbitrage he enabled so handily in his earlier job.  He just returned from an extended trip to China, where I am sure he saw the industrious Chinese workers beavering away at the jobs he helped to outsource.  Let's see what he comes up with.

Miller's right that education is critically important (Lowell - 2/6/2007 12:42:37 PM)
to success in a globalized economy.  I guess where the two of us might differ is that I believe education alone is a SUFFICIENT condition, just an absolutely NECESSARY one.  I also believe strongly in fair trade, including the incorporation of strong labor, human rights, and environmental standards into our trade agreements.  In addition, we need to deal with distortions to trade caused by government subsidies and currency manipulation.  Finally, we've got the whole "outsourcing" issue to contend with.  As I said, education alone is not the answer...

You note: FOR PROFIT colleges (teacherken - 2/6/2007 2:15:50 PM)
I supposed that means he also supports FOR PROFIT educational enterprises at the K-12 level as well?

I am not impressed.

Child Exploitation (Matt H - 2/7/2007 11:10:06 AM)
Under any other name, profiteering on the backs of our children's education sure sounds like exploitation to me.  When public schools fail at least we can find out why since ultimately the administrators are accountable to us - in the private setting they are accountable to the shareholders.

Take greedy people like H-M out of the lives of our young.
