Vivian Paige has reported in her blog that Del. Bob Marshall (R-Prince William) has succeeded in getting House Bill 2797 out of committee by a 12-7 vote. It could come up for a vote on the floor of the House of Delegates as early as this week. It states the following:
Constitutional right to enjoyment of life. Provides that "the right to enjoyment of life" guaranteed by Article 1, -º 1 of the Constitution of Virginia is vested in each born and preborn human being from the moment of fertilization.

FYI, 1-800-889-0229 is a toll-free constituent hotline. Click here to find out who represents you in the VA General Assembly. Tell them what you think of HB2797.

UPDATE: Sens. Cuccinelli and O'Brien are co-sponsors.

It'll never pass the Senate (DanG - 2/5/2007 1:12:37 AM)
But I wouldn't be surprised if it passed the House.

Yeah, you're probably right (Chris Guy - 2/5/2007 1:44:56 AM)
And it may even ultimately backfire.

It won't backfire (Ingrid - 2/5/2007 9:05:43 AM)
This will get them conservative votes, eventhough it won't pass.

This isn't Utah (Chris Guy - 2/5/2007 9:21:38 AM)
According to Survey USA; Virginia is 39% Pro-Life, 54% Pro-Choice. When Gov. Mike Rounds (R-SD) backed making abortion illegal, his approval dropped 14%.

This is blatantly unconstitutional... (Lowell - 2/5/2007 7:39:23 AM)
...but not for much longer unless we get a Democrat in the White House in 2008.  Another 4 or 8 years of Republican (mis)rule and Roe v. Wade is toast.

It is unconstitutional . . . for now (PM - 2/5/2007 9:17:23 AM)
That's why continuing to maintain a Democratic U.S. Senate is so important.

Too bad we don't have a real attorney general.  By that I mean someone who gives neutral, unbiased legal interpretations.  As I've stated earlier in these parts, McDonnell's alma mater, Regent, is one of the lowest rated law schools in the country in terms of percentage of people who passed the bar.

This is outrageous! (demnan - 2/5/2007 8:59:55 AM)
I don't believe the majority of people in Prince William County oppose abortion.  When will people wake up and stop electing these sexist, facist swine?

Get out the Moderate Vote (jackiehva - 2/5/2007 2:39:46 PM)
The "facist swine" get out the far right voters while the moderates can't or won't make the effort to go to the polls and send these guys packing.  It's that simple.  The Loudoun voters finally sent Dick Black into near obscurity but it took two terms of his extremist/nut-case behavior in the House of Delegates and an exceptional Democratic opponent to do it.

The only way this could pass (RayH - 2/5/2007 11:37:09 AM)
The only way this will pass is if the majority of Virginians passively allow extremists in the legislature to continue unchecked.

It is unlikely to pass with this bill, but they will keep trying year after year.

I guess this means the death penatly is out the window (totallynext - 2/5/2007 6:34:43 PM)
