Senator Webb Supports Biden-Hagel-Levin Resolution on Iraq War

Washington, D.C. - Senator Jim Webb of Virginia today announced his support of the bi-partisan Senate Resolution sponsored by Senators Joseph Biden (D-DE), Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Carl Levin (D-MI), which calls for a change of direction in the Iraq war.

"We're looking for a way to encourage responsible conduct in this administration," noted Senator Webb. "It's become all too clear that the Congress must take the lead on this."

"It is inverted political logic for people to say that we need to continue in this direction for the good of our troops," Webb continued.  "I believe this resolution will help stabilize their rotational cycle and serve notice to this administration that it needs to be more responsible when sending units overseas. We are not continuing this war on behalf of our troops.  There are fighting it, often at great sacrifice, on our behalf."

The bipartisan resolution, S.Con.Res.2, states that "the U.S. strategy and presence on the ground in Iraq can only be sustained with the support of the American people and bipartisan support from Congress?. It is not in the national interest of the United States to deepen its military involvement in Iraq, particularly by increasing U.S. troop presence in Iraq."

Senator Webb, a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War and former Secretary of the Navy, serves on the Foreign Affairs, Armed Services, Joint Economic and Veterans Affairs Committees.

Jim Webb is going to be interviewed on the Lou Dobbs program on CNN tonight soon.  Go watch.

Webb Supports Biden-Hagel-Levin (Golile - 1/24/2007 8:08:42 PM)
I personally don't see how any of them could have voted against the resolution.  Wish it had more teeth!

However, Webb, I believe, is destined for greatness.  So glad he defeated Sen. Doorknob!

Just finished hearing Joe Liebertoad (Catzmaw - 1/24/2007 8:39:58 PM)
say that since the President won't stop his course the only course for war opponents is to cut off funding.  He, of course, does not want to do this because he's a big fan of the War on Terra.  Then he blah-blahed about letting Petraeus try for a few months to succeed.  Ick, whiny pro-war voice is really nauseating.

Chuck Hagel was totally kicking Liebertoad's ass on this interview.  Sure, he's a conservative Republican, but he's so passionate and articulate in opposition to the war that I can't help but like the guy.  "General Petraeus may be one of the finest generals we've ever had, but if the policy is flawed we will fail."  And this: "General Petraeus does not set policy.  He enforces policy.  We as part of a coequal branch of government have to set the policy." And this:  "If it comes to the funding, I'm opposed, but it may come to that if we are left no other choice."

Ooh, sarcasm at VP Cheney's statement that the American people do not have the stomach for the fight.  "You tell me ... no he should tell the families of some of the people who've lost their lives or been maimed, that they didn't have the stomach..."  Also, points out that Petraeus just wrote a book on counter-terrorism and stated that the only way to defeat an insurgency is through a "political strategy, and nowhere [I'm paraphrasing now.  Thanks Mom, your calls are always convenient] in any of this Administration's proposals is there any attempt to engage in a diplomatic solution ... and General Petraeus has written that without such a policy a counter-insurgency fails".

If I were Cheney (and Rice) I'd be afraid to be left sitting within ten feet of Hagel's smoldering death ray eyes.  He could power a mower off the rise in blood pressure he gets every time Cheney's name is mentioned.

If anyone wants to watch it, Olbermann re-airs at midnight.

No need to apologize (phriendlyjaime - 1/24/2007 9:20:57 PM)
You're my Richmond buddy; please.  :)

Well, it's a free country! (Lowell - 1/24/2007 9:52:21 PM)

I have to agree (DanG - 1/25/2007 2:12:30 AM)
Politically, Webb may be the best choice out there for VEEP.  But we've all seen a lot of Webb the past few months.  He IS independent.  I don't know what kind of VP candidate he'd be.  After all, he wouldn't be afraid to disagree with his running mate and promise to try to change policy there.

In my opinion, Webb has more experience than Obama...or even Edwards.  And he has more government inner-workings and campaign experience than  Clark.  If he ran in 2008, I'd vote for him in the primary.  But he won't.
