Sen. John Warner opposed to the President's escalation

With 2008 breathing down his neck, Sen. John Warner follows the lead of his junior Senator Jim Webb to oppose the President's escalation.
Sen. John Warner (R-VA) will introduce a resolution today "making clear that he does not support the President on increasing the troop levels in Iraq" and calling escalation "a mistake," CNN's Dana Bash reports. Warner's resolution will be cosponsored by Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Ben Nelson (D-NE).
The President's surge support has completely fallen apart. And it's nice that Senator Warner has finally joined the reality-based position on the escalation.

I believe Warner's supporting a watered-down (Lowell - 1/22/2007 5:19:55 PM)
resolution that has even fewer teeth than the other one.  Not impressed.

Remember Republican Discipline (Hugo Estrada - 1/22/2007 6:34:19 PM)
Breaking ranks is a big sin. Even if he is supporting a watered down resolution, the point is that he is not agreeing with Bush.

Maybe not what I would like, but at least it is going in the right direction.

He did - (Rob - 1/22/2007 6:56:29 PM)
But still a big deal in my opinion.

Hmm (KCinDC - 1/22/2007 7:18:23 PM)
Neither resolution has any teeth, so we might as well have as many Republicans rejecting the escalation as possible, if the goal is to stop it.

From a purely political, amoral viewpoint, it might be better if as many Republicans stick with the Bush plan as possible (especially if they're up for reelection in 2008), since it's unlikely that Bush will change course regardless of how many Republicans tell him he's heading further into disaster.

Norm Coleman (Mark - 1/22/2007 7:55:47 PM)
I just watched the news report on Warner's presser, and Norm Coleman, another endangered Republican, was right there. I think they are seriously worried, even this far out, about their re-election prospects.

Wait and see (Marty - 1/22/2007 9:28:05 PM)
I wouldn't put too much trust in a Warner compromise.  It will probably involve sending more troops for longer.

Warner got the message (Kindler - 1/22/2007 9:33:31 PM)
I think John Warner figured out a long time ago that Virginia is no longer the type of state where you can just take knee-jerk right-wing brainless stances every day and expect to coast to re-election.

Somebody else, of course, was a little slower to get that message...

Now maybe Senator Warner (kevinceckowski - 1/22/2007 9:52:31 PM)
will get Virgil and Hargrove to leave town too and clean up the GOP that he so loves.

I can't wait to see what Senator Webb does/says on Tuesday night with his rebuttal to the SOTU address.

I am very happy Senator Warner finally came out against this escalation-brainless plan.
