Poll: Bush Speech Fails to Convince American People

According to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, conducted after Bush's Iraq speech last night, most Americans remain deeply unimpressed.  According to the poll, only 34% of Americans approve of the way Bush is handling Iraq, with 64% disapproving.  No "bounce" there.  If anything, there was a negative "bounce" (a "thud?") on the question of whether we're winning or losing the war.  On that question, only 29% of Americans now believe we're winning, down from 34% in December 2006 and 56% in December 2005.

The one thin ray of slightly good news for Bush?  The percentage of people trusting him to deal with Iraq rose 4 points from December 2006, to 36%.  In contrast, the percentage of people trusting the Democrats in Congress on Iraq fell 9 points, from 56% to 47%.

Perhaps it's time for Congressional Democrats to unite around their own plan for Iraq?  Should we leave immediately, as many on the left argue?  Or should we, as Jim Webb argued during the campaign, get out of IRaq "carefully" after having gotten in "precipitously?"  Personally, I'm with Jim Webb on this one: get out of Iraq, but not precipitously.  Also, try to salvage as much as possible of U.S. interests in the region while avoiding a bloodbath and possibly regional conflagration.  No problem, right?  I'm sure the Bush Administration can handle that.  Ha.

Bush Approval falls to record low in Rasmussen (Ken C. - 1/12/2007 4:19:09 PM)
"W" has now fallen to the lowest approval level ever measured in the heavily GOP weighted Rasmussen Poll.

"Just 35% of Americans now approve of the way that George W. Bush is performing his role as President. That’s down sharply in recent days and is the lowest level of Approval ever measured by Rasmussen Reports." ..."Sixty-one percent (61%) disapprove of his performance."
