Senator Webb's First Act: "Sweeping Expansion of Veterans Education Benefits"

I just received a press release from Senator Webb (wow, I love saying that!), announcing his first major initiative as Senator:

Washington, D.C., January 4 GÇô Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) launched his career in the United States Senate Thursday by introducing a sweeping expansion of the education and training benefits currently available to the nationGÇÖs 2.4 million active duty and reserve members of the armed forces.

The GÇ£Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2007GÇ¥ (S.22) is designed to provide veterans with a level of educational benefits identical to those provided to service members at the end of World War II.

The new benefits package included in WebbGÇÖs legislation (S.22) would include coverage of tuition, room and board, and a monthly stipend of $1,000.  Existing law GÇô known as the Montgomery GI Bill GÇô provides financial support of up to $800 per month for veteransGÇÖ educational expenses, but does not necessarily cover the full cost of higher education or career training.  In addition, existing law requires participating service members to pay $1,200 in their first year of service in order to qualify for the benefit.

As Webb says, S.22 "will provide veterans of the 9/11 era with the same program of benefits that our fathers and grandfathers received after World War II."  That's richly deserved; kudos to Senator Webb for this most excellent bill!

P.S. With this act alone, Webb has now surpassed the accomplishments of George Allen in his entire 6 years as Senator.  Seriously, name one piece of significant legislation that George Allen sponsored.  Uhhhhh....

wow (TurnVirginiaBlue - 1/4/2007 6:57:17 PM)
he's not missing a beat!

Yes, the GI bill was one of the great social mobility enablers and creating a middle class enablers of this century.

If VA vets don't get Webb's commitment to them now I don't know what it will take and this is overall "good juju" for US as a society too.

In all fairness (relawson - 1/4/2007 8:00:34 PM)
George Allen did co-sponsor legislation to replace the American IT workforce with foreign labor, through a visa that allows companies to underpay and exploit our foreign guests.

Ooooh, you mean legislation that actually benefits PEOPLE as opposed to corporations.  Eh, I can't think of anything.

Allen's legacy: expanding America's racist vocabulary to include the word "Macaca".  As if we didn't have enough words for darker skinned people.  The KKK salutes him.

Didn't he steal a bill (madgranny - 1/4/2007 8:46:37 PM)
from a Democratic Senator last year?

Almost (DukieDem - 1/4/2007 8:47:28 PM)
He replaced "will" with "shall".

As Stephen Colbert said, that is a HUGE difference ;-)

anybody go? (pvogel - 1/4/2007 8:26:12 PM)
to the senate office bldg for the 1pm open house with Webb today?

I was all set to go and work intruded (Catzmaw - 1/4/2007 8:55:36 PM)
Dang.  Would love to know how it went today.

Wow! This not only covers Veterans' (madgranny - 1/4/2007 8:51:22 PM)
issues, it's a very good start on his desire to lessen the class gap in this country. My Senator!

Lowell, does Senator Webb need a Cold Fusion Developer? (demnan - 1/4/2007 8:55:38 PM)
I'd love to apply for the job, and I've been doing Cold Fusion for 10 years now.  Is there a way you could connect me with an email.  I could send my resume.

No idea, but send your resume to (Lowell - 1/4/2007 9:57:17 PM)

Hah! I told my Republican sister that Webb would do more (Catzmaw - 1/4/2007 9:00:24 PM)
for her Marine daughter than that windbag, Allen.  I can hardly wait to e-mail the kid.  She just finished blowing all the money she saved in Iraq on training in underwater welding in Florida.  While Webb's at it I would like to know if there's anything he can do about clearing the logjam on some military pay.  The kid was medevacked out of Iraq for seizures around September or early October and STILL hasn't received thousands of dollars in back pay she's owed.

Was the original (mkfox - 1/4/2007 11:33:30 PM)
press release posted on the WebbforSenate.com site? I'm trying locate the original!

Not sure. I got it in an e-mail. (Lowell - 1/4/2007 11:34:57 PM)

Webb has Class (mosquitopest - 1/5/2007 8:39:50 AM)
Webb is acting on his campaign promises so this should surprise no one.

However, this bill will do much to aid the lower and middle class in America.

Thanks Heavens it's not another congressional earmark for the likes of Pat Robertson and other elitists.

Maybe the day of subsidies to make the elitists richer is over?

ya think?  Buzz...Buzz...

Defense Supporter (Hoss - 1/5/2007 5:07:49 PM)
Most politicians that claim to support defense actually support defense spending that buys new equipment and leads to more spending in their State or district.

FINALLY we have a leader for whom defense support means support to the troops themselves.

My father went through college on the GI bill after WWII (Pain - 1/5/2007 5:32:08 PM)
I makes me proud.  Wish my dad were here to see it.
