Virgil Goode's national offensive and the Virginia GOP's affirming silence

Virgil Goode has gone on the offensive (pun intended) in his battle against Keith Ellison's religion. As picked up by Lowell yesterday, Goode wasn't content to keep his feelings directed to those in his locality. He has now purposefully moved his attack on Muslims to the national stage in a bizarre op-ed in the USA Today titled "Save Judeo-Christian values."
Immigration is arguably the most important issue facing the country today. At least 12 million immigrants are here illegally. And diversity visas, a program initiated in 1990 to grant visas to people from countries that had low U.S. immigration at that time, are bringing in 50,000 a year from various parts of the world, including the Middle East.

Let us remember that we were not attacked by a nation on 9/11; we were attacked by extremists who acted in the name of the Islamic religion. I believe that if we do not stop illegal immigration totally, reduce legal immigration and end diversity visas, we are leaving ourselves vulnerable to infiltration by those who want to mold the United States into the image of their religion, rather than working within the Judeo-Christian principles that have made us a beacon for freedom-loving persons around the world.

Again, Goode equates all Muslims with terrorist extremists. Again, Goode tears at Jefferson's separation of Church and State by equating our Constitutional freedom with his personal "Judeo-Christian" principles. And, again, Goode fears that 50,000 immigrants (of which some unstated amount are Muslim) out of 1.1 million total legal immigrants - less than 5% of that total! - somehow might "mold" America into some sort of Islamic state that threatens Virgil Goode and our freedoms.

In other words, Goode has made a fool of himself and his party again - this time in a national newspaper with a circulation of 2.3 million people. There is no way the Virginia GOP can hide from this now. Virgil Goode and his national op-ed requires their response - and any Republican's silence is now affirmation.

The "Goode Watch" begins soon...

No Word (mmc0412 - 1/3/2007 5:43:06 PM)
I sent an email to Eric Cantor, my rep, asking for his opinion on the matter about 2 weeks ago.  Haven't gotten word from him yet.

Today I read that Ellison will (madgranny - 1/3/2007 7:09:36 PM)
use a famous Virginian's Koran - Thomas Jefferson.  I'm very interested to hear if this changes anything. Btw, still waiting to hear from Frank Wolf.

Where (seveneasypeaces - 1/3/2007 7:34:02 PM)
Is there a link for this anywhere?  A link to Jefferson's Koran and/or Ellison's swearing in.  Thanks!

I found this (seveneasypeaces - 1/3/2007 7:52:21 PM)

What does this mean? (Mark - 1/3/2007 7:13:58 PM)
The "Goode Watch" begins soon...

Thanks Rob.

it'll be our ongoing watch... (Rob - 1/3/2007 7:24:59 PM)
on the GOP's ongoing silence.

I have to tell you (Mark - 1/3/2007 8:06:13 PM)
as someone who has followed his misdeeds since early 2004, nothing makes more happy. I have talked and blogged almost exclusively about Virgil and his nonsense.

Anything I can do, let me know. I have a few things in the works right now. I am just about finished renewing my blog, so I will be starting there.

Thanks again, Rob.

Thanks - I'll need your help... (Rob - 1/3/2007 8:35:04 PM)
there are a lot of silent Virginia Republicans right now!

Watching Virgil (Kathy Gerber - 1/3/2007 7:55:29 PM)
It's been entered into his permanent record now.

Great Idea Kathy (Mark - 1/3/2007 8:07:47 PM)
We need to keep the visibility up and beat down the attempts by some to cover for Virgil by not actually saying anything.

Someone should add... (Rob - 1/3/2007 8:36:15 PM)
his comments to Fox News and in USA Today - just as bad and shows a pattern.

Have not heard (Gordie - 1/3/2007 11:26:59 PM)
from Tom Credena of CO or Del. Watkins Abbitt of the 59th District of VA.

Still have not heard (Gordie - 1/3/2007 11:31:04 PM)

If VA has any recall in their code.

Gordie (Mark - 1/4/2007 4:21:38 AM)
From Waldo's site:

Virginia is one of a kind — we don’t have recall elections, but we do have “recall trials.” That comes under §24.2-23:

Removal of elected and certain appointed officers by courts.

Upon petition, a circuit court may remove from office any elected officer or officer who has been appointed to fill an elective office, residing within the jurisdiction of the court:

  1. For neglect of duty, misuse of office, or incompetence in the performance of duties when that neglect of duty, misuse of office, or incompetence in the performance of duties has a material adverse effect upon the conduct of the office, or

  2. Upon conviction of a misdemeanor pursuant to Article 1 (§ 18.2-247 et seq.) or Article 1.1 (§ 18.2-265.1 et seq.) of Chapter 7 of Title 18.2 and after all rights of appeal have terminated involving the:

  a. Manufacture, sale, gift, distribution, or possession with intent to manufacture, sell, give, or distribute a controlled substance or marijuana, or

  b. Sale, possession with intent to sell, or placing an advertisement for the purpose of selling drug paraphernalia, or

  c. Possession of any controlled substance or marijuana, and such conviction under a, b, or c has a material adverse effect upon the conduct of such office, or

  3. Upon conviction, and after all rights of appeal have terminated, of a misdemeanor involving a “hate crime” as that term is defined in § 52-8.5 when the conviction has a material adverse effect upon the conduct of such office.

The petition must be signed by a number of registered voters who reside within the jurisdiction of the officer equal to ten percent of the total number of votes cast at the last election for the office that the officer holds.

Any person removed from office under the provisions of subdivision 2 or 3 may not be subsequently subject to the provisions of this section for the same criminal offense.

So you’d have to get 21,208 signatures and a judge who believes that Rep. Goode has shown “incompetence in the performance of duties when that neglect of duty, misuse of office, or incompetence in the performance of duties has a material adverse effect upon the conduct of the office.”

Hope this helps.

THOMAS JEFFERSON’S COPY OF THE KORAN TO BE USED IN CONGRESSIONAL SWEARING-IN CEREMONY

Rep.-elect Keith Ellison to Take Oath of Office on Alcoran of Mohammed (1764)

When Rep.-elect Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) takes his individual ceremonial oath of  office on Jan. 4, it is to be with one hand upon Thomas Jefferson’s copy of the  Koran.

Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, requested to take the oath upon Jefferson’s
personal copy of George Sale’s 1734 translation of the Koran, commonly called the Alcoran of Mohammed (London: Hawes, Clarke, Collins and Wilcox, 1764). The two-volume work, which resides in the Library of Congress’ Rare Book and Special Collections Division, is one of nearly 6,500 titles sold to Congress by Jefferson in 1815 to replace the Congressional Library that had been destroyed when the British burned the Capitol during the War of 1812.

"The unparalleled holdings of the Library of Congress reflect Thomas Jefferson’s universal approach to collecting," said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. "Jefferson believed that there was no subject to which a member of Congress may
not have occasion to refer. As the nation's library, and as a symbol of the  central role that free access to information plays in a knowledge-based democracy,
the Library continues to collect internationally, on all subjects, and in more than 470 languages."

The Library has periodically provided historic bibles and other works from its collections for use in ceremonial occasions.  Sale’s English translation is credited with introducing the West to the Koran.  It is the first to have been translated directly from the Arabic to English. Jefferson’scopy was rebound by the Library in 1918.

In 2000, to mark the Library’s bicentennial and to honor the role played in its history by the third president, the Library mounted an exhibition titled "Thomas Jefferson: Genius of Liberty," which included a display of his personal library. The exhibition is accessible online at www.loc.gov/exhibits/jefferson. On the occasion, the Library also launched a worldwide search to locate duplicates of volumes from
the personal library of Thomas Jefferson that were destroyed by a second fire in the U.S. Capitol on Christmas eve in 1851. The project was supported by a gift of $1 million from Jerral Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, and other donations from members of the Madison Council, the Library’s private sector advisory group.

Plans are currently underway to publicly display Jefferson’s library in late 2007 when the Library unveils its New Visitors Experience, which will showcase the Thomas Jefferson Building and the Library’s physical and digital resources. Selected volumes from Jefferson’s library are periodically on display in the "American Treasures of the Library" exhibition.

Thanks, teacherken. (Kathy Gerber - 1/4/2007 12:09:49 AM)
I've seen that referred to but never the original release.

This is petulant but (Kathy Gerber - 1/4/2007 12:07:57 AM)
Times like this, I really resent the Judeo-Christian term. It's like Judeo is added on to make it sort of intellectualized or inclusive (ironically enough).

RAC issued a statement before ADL.

Here's quite a collection of facts just on the Quran incident
http://en.wikipedia....

Why not call it Judeo-Christian-Muslim? (Lowell - 1/4/2007 11:57:04 AM)
That would group the three great Abrahamic religions together and account for about half the worlds' population (2.1 billion Christians, 1.3 billion Muslims, 14 million Jews).
