Are the Democratic Blogs Scaring Off John Warner?

The right-wing Republican American Spectator magazine has this to say about John Warner's plans for 2008 (bolding added for emphasis):

Warner's Virginia seat was thought to be a safe one, but with victory by Democrat Jim Webb -- some would say it was more of a loss by Sen. George Allen -- Warner is now uncertain of whether he's willing to put himself through what is sure to be a bruising battle.

"It isn't that Allen lost, it's how he lost, that has to trouble Warner," says a Republican political consultant who has worked in Virginia. "The far-left wing of the party was so aggressive in Virginia with guerrilla tactics, Web attack ads and blog posts, that Warner has to look at all that and wonder if it's worth that kind of fight. He's had it comparatively easy in the past few races. Does he want to fight for what amounts to a minority seat?"

Translation of "far-left-wing?"  Uh, I think they're talking about us, the Virginia Progressive blogger community.  Ha.
Of course, we're not "far-left-wing," just mainstream Democrats and Jim Webb/Mark Warner/Tim Kaine Progressives, but if they want to comfort themselves by (mis)labeling us as "far-left-wing," let 'em do it, I say.  As Sun Tzu writes, "If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles."  Unfortunately for the Republicans, they do NOT, apparently, fully "know the enemy."  On the one hand, they DO realize that the Virginia Democratic blogosphere represents a great threat to them.  On the other hand, they apparently do not realize that they can't defeat us by trying to pretend we're some far-left-wing, International ANSWER coalition members or something.  Because we're not.

No, guys, I'll let you in on a little secret here: the way to defeat the Democratic bloggers is to have just as powerful and articulate a group of mainstream, serious Republican bloggers fighting for YOUR guy.  The problem is, you don't have that right now, not even close.  In fact, I would argue that Jerry Kilgore and George Allen were actually HURT by their partisan bloggers, while Tim Kaine and Jim Webb were greatly helped by theirs.  Oh, and by the way, good luck getting all the rabid right-wingers united behind John Warner, a leading member of the so-called "Gang of 14," a "RINO" in many of their minds, and definitely NOT a Virgil Goode Republican (aka, an anti-Muslim bigot).  Should be a fun 2008!  :)

American Spectator? (Catzmaw - 1/2/2007 10:48:31 AM)
Wasn't it American Spectator that ran Tyrrell's ridiculous column critiquing Webb's deficiencies as a dinner companion 23 years ago?  Gee, glad they know how to keep to the issues.

Yes. (Lowell - 1/2/2007 10:53:17 AM)
It was also in the New York Sun.  What a joke.

Nope (CommonSense - 1/2/2007 11:30:20 AM)
I don't see him being scared of much of anything.
For "how" Allen lost?
Warner certainly isn't known for shooting himself repeatedly in the "foot"....

More loser excuses. (Bubby - 1/2/2007 1:31:16 PM)
Jerry Kilgore, and George Allen are just the two most recent clueless, visionless, devisive, and mean-spirited Republican candidates in the brood. They assembled a bad crew and ran bad campaigns.  They deserved to lose - the opposition just televised their red-ass.

And note to Southside; if you think that you will regain your footing on the efforts of Vigil Goode, you are most likely as stupid as Virgil himself.  You need to quit clucking about Islamic strawmen and start working together with a smarter Representative.  Really.

Glad to see you back Lowell! Keep up the good work!

To the American Spectator, I say, (summercat - 1/2/2007 2:51:57 PM)
"Oh, please!"  I believe this little exercise in fantasy is a way to construct a straw dog, and generate money for Warner.  Allen's campaign was way nastier than Webb's, and in any case, while I am thrilled that Webb won, the win was greatly helped by mistakes of Allen and his campaign.  And Kilgore's Hitler-rant didn't help him against Kaine either.
It would be nice if some Democrat came charging out of nowhere to defeat J. Warner--but I don't see that this is likely--and I am sure Sen Warner would agree.

GOP Blogs (Too Conservative - 1/2/2007 4:35:16 PM)
I do agree that Allen's bunch hurt him.

It was done too obviously and with partisan divide.

...but....the gop DOES have some good blogs!

Yours was really good when you were (Lowell - 1/2/2007 5:22:59 PM)
writing for it all the time.

Another theory (Kindler - 1/2/2007 4:59:29 PM)
Maybe Warner's just tired of Tom Davis calling him in the middle of the night, sobbing and begging him to please, please retire?

M. Warner vs. Davis in '08 (drmontoya - 1/2/2007 5:04:37 PM)
Mark Warner hopefully is the next U.S. Senator from Virginia. =)
