AP members have voted for their top 10 stories of 2006.  They are:

1) The Iraq War
2) The U.S. Elections
3) Nuclear standoffs (Iran and North Korea)
4) Illegal immigration
5) Scandals in Congress
6) Saddam convicted
7) Mideast fighting
7 - tie) Rumsfeld resigns
9) Airliner plot
10) Disaster in Darfur

So, what do you think about this list?  What are YOUR top stories of 2006?  How about in Virginia, specifically?  Also, what do you think the top stories are going to be in 2007?  At this time next year, for instance, who do you think we'll be talking about as the front runners for the Republican and Democratic 2008 Presidential nominations?  Will we be talking about how the Demorats took over the Virginia State Senate, maybe even the House of Delegates?  Discuss amongst yourselves! :)

Good to "see" you, Lowell-- (summercat - 12/31/2006 5:17:51 PM)
and a Happy New Year, too!!
I have no real opinions on the stories above--and I like the Daily Press reports on state and local stories.

They've got Jim Webb beating George Allen (Lowell - 12/31/2006 5:33:34 PM)
as their top local story of 2006.  Can't disagree with that! :)  Happy New Year.

2. Disaster in Darfur
3. Illegal Immigration
4. Scandals in Congress
5. Nuclear Stand off
6. Rumsfeld Firing
7. Democrats Uniting
8. Iraq Civil War
9. Israel-Lebanon War

What about climate change? (Kindler - 12/31/2006 6:04:50 PM)
I'm disappointed that increasing awareness and concern about climate change (as highlighted by Al Gore's film) didn't make the list.  It's the basic problem of the short-term perspective of the news media, politicians, businesses, and most people.  If a train is heading in our direction at breakneck speed, it's not news until it hits us.

Might it not be too late by then?

Totally agree. Global warming was (Lowell - 12/31/2006 7:47:10 PM)
a huge story in 2006, if for no other reason than Al Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth."  And the year ends with a huge hunk of the Arctic ice sheet breaking off.  If that's not a big story, what is?!?

Democrats regain congress (thegools - 12/31/2006 7:06:23 PM)
in a sharp rebuke of George W. Bush's administration.

I think that deserves at least a spot in the top ten.
