Delegate Chuck Caputo and the Spirited Sully Democrats

Western Fairfax County is turning blue+blue.  Part of the story is an invigorated group of Sully District Democrats, and a new Delegate, Chuck Caputo.

Chuck is a straight talker.  At a recent Legislative Issues Breakfast sponsored by the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce, he explained the obstacles for northern Virginia getting transportation dollars in the General Assembly:

"The key thing here is to go to Richmond with a united Northern Virginia delegation," Caputo said. "We have to pick up the votes on the Finance Committee and there are three delegates from Northern Virginia in particular that need to get the message to support [our efforts]," he said. The three delegates he named are Dels. Timothy Hugo (R-40), Scott Lingamfelter (R-31) and Jeffrey Frederick (R-52).

I was so impressed with Chuck when he ran in 2005 that I volunteered for his campaign.  It was the first campaign I had ever worked on.  He picked up what had been a fairly safe Republican seat.

The Sully Democrats are one reason the tide is turning blue in western Fairfax.  These photos were taken at a Caputo fundraiser last weekend, attended by about 175 people at the home of LuAnn and Steve McNabb.  I was going to write up what people said in their speeches, but instead I'll just say it was really fun.  The Sully group has lots of interesting people, and my wife and I just had a great time bopping from one conversation to another.

When I worked on Chuck's campaign, this trio above ran the show.  They're an amazingly bright group with great campaign savvy.  (Joe just came back from a stint on the Nebraska congressional campaigns, Becca is now finance director for Patrick Kennedy, and Scott will once again work for Chuck.)  I thought I knew something about politics -- they taught me a lot.  If you want to see how sophisticated campaigns are run, think about joining Chuck's 2007 campaign, or volunteering for the Sully Democrats.  Here's their website.

Mr. Caputo perfectly encapsulated Northern Virginia's problem in the assembly: hostiles in our midst named Frederick, Hugo, and Lingamfelter. Every one of them should be given a career adjustment (and so should Dave Albo). For starters. I sincerely hope that Brian Moran and the Democrats are not only fixin' to run credible candidates against 'em all, but planning on beating the sox off 'em--- and replacing them with good, solid, progressive Democrats. That means we'll have to find candidates, fund them liberally (!), and work like all get out to  elect them, and we'd better start now.

Judging from the fabulous turnout of both Republicans and Democrats I'd say our Delegate Chuck Caputo has done a fabulous job in the 67th District out here in Sully and
Springfield District (also one precinct in Loudoun to represent all of us.  We managed to pull off a fabulous win
out here and want to keep this going.  Chuck has been an advocate for many of his constituents since being elected
and has worked tirelessly to be there for us.  I'm thrilled that I've been a part of the effort to have him
win in Sully District.  When you see someone like Chuck Caputo win it makes it all worthwhile because you know he will be a great representative in Richmond.  He has more than proved himself over the past year!!!  Thanks to LuAnne
Mcnabb for such a wonderful event and opening up her home to all of us. We have a great group of people out here so please check us out and consider joining our Committee and effort to elect worthy people who will be there for all of us. Let's get some momentum going to work against Hugo also.  We need your help to make it happen.
