A refreshing outside the Beltway view of the Bush v. Webb encounter . . .

Jim WebbGÇÖs Senate tenure promises to be unlike any Virginia GÇö or even the nation GÇö has seen lately. Having traveled essentially from obscurity to victory in a few short months, he arrives in Washington owing few, other than himself and the voters.

The freedom to be true to his genuine passions has much to commend it.

But when all is said and done, the name of the game in politics is crafting consensus out of discord. Jim Webb knows where he stands and doesnGÇÖt hesitate to let others know also. Soon, heGÇÖll move on to the next level GÇö turning passion into policy. For that, heGÇÖll need a different kind of language.

No one should try to muzzle Webb. Odds are, they couldnGÇÖt if they tried. But make no mistake, Paul Reagan and Virginia have signed on for a rhetorical wild ride.
