Gilmore for Pres? Novak thinks so

So Robert Novak, known for his part in exposing the identity of undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame.

Well, now Robert "douchebag of liberty" Novak thinks that Gilmore is running for President (or Senate) in 2008.

Novak writes,

Jim Gilmore, former governor of Virginia and Republican National chairman, is quietly building an organization to get back into elective politics -- perhaps as a candidate for president.

Gilmore might be looking to fill the mainstream conservative vacuum created when fellow Virginian George Allen's defeat for re-election to the Senate ended his presidential ambitions. Other options for Gilmore could be running for the Senate in 2008 if Republican John Warner does not seek another term at age 81, or running for governor in 2009.

The last Republican governor of Virginia, Gilmore also is the last major Republican candidate to carry populous northern Virginia -- the key to victory in the state.

Personally, I don't think that Gilmore has a snowball's chance in hell, what do you guys think?

Well, really I just wanted to start a discussion.

I thinki Gilmore can pull of a primary victory (for Senate), but would be toast in a Presidential primary or a Senate General, what do you guys think?

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA-HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA-HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA-HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Yeah, that's what I think about that.  Honestly, the only way it could get funnier (and the way to truly make my head explode out of CRAZY HILARITY) is to run Newt Gingrich as VP.

That's a big fat ditto from me, Jaime (Catzmaw - 11/25/2006 5:50:30 PM)

I sat behind Novak at the Terps game yesterday (Mookie - 11/25/2006 4:44:09 PM)
And the guy who got me the floor seats BEGGED me not to thrown popcorn kernels at him, so I didn't. The old man can't even comb his hair, he's so senile. I don't know how he stays on TV. He may have stylists for him on air, but his senility still shows through the pancake makeup.
The Nixon administation planted stories through Novak years ago here.

His son who wrote the Swiftboater book went to UMD, and got a lot of free press through his old man, although Novak violated jouralistic ethics by not revealing the conection when he "reported" on his son's activities. Why let ethics get in the way now?

This reminds me of a story.... (ericy - 11/27/2006 11:45:28 AM)

There was I guy I knew who was a practical joker of sorts.  He got on one of those rides where there is a big boat-like thing that swings back and forth, and he climbed into one of the back rows.

Once the thing started to move, he started to moan about how he thought he was going to be sick.  "Ohh, I am not kidding", he would say.  Finally he made some noise like he was throwing up, and threw a big box of popcorn up in the air which rained down on the people in front of him.

Sorry - when you mentioned having Novak in front of you, that was the first thing that popped into my mind...

Thanks, "ericy" . . . (cycle12 - 11/27/2006 10:12:44 PM)
. . . for providing such a perfect mental picture that made me laugh out loud!

Bob Novak? (drmontoya - 11/25/2006 6:55:37 PM)
People still listen to Bob? I really don't care what Mr. Novak has to say. Anyway off to see Bobby. Will have a diary when I return. =)

No one listens to Bob but Rupert nt (Andrea Chamblee - 11/25/2006 9:22:16 PM)

Don't Scare Me like That (Barbara - 11/25/2006 10:40:28 PM)
Gilmore??? Never.  Though a Senate primary between Gilmore, Allen, and Davis would be fun to watch.

I see Bob Novak almost everyday (he works in the building next door).  Even walking down the street he is never without the pancake makeup.  Creepy looking.

Gilmore, Novak and Other Fools (cycle12 - 11/25/2006 11:14:16 PM)
Yes, Republicans; PLEASE run Jim Gilmore for President so we can (as I wrote just last week) beat him like a rented mule.

Robert Novak?! Phhhttttt!  Novak recently claimed that there is some type of personal animus between Jim Webb and Robert Gates, but Webb has said that he doesn't even know Gates.

Which one do you believe?

What other fools think Jim Gilmore may be a viable presidential candidate in 2008?  Regardless; please get them involved in his campaign as soon as possible.

Thanks!

Steve

Remind them... (Arturo - 11/27/2006 11:46:21 PM)
Let's remind every voter of his "No Car Tax" lie that localities are stuck with now.  Thanks, Gov. Gilmore!!

Precisly, "Arturo" (cycle12 - 11/28/2006 6:52:12 AM)

Corrections (cycle12 - 11/28/2006 6:54:34 AM)
Must be too early for me . . . that should have been "Precisely" spelled like that, and it would be better to spell my own name correctly, too . . .

Let him run (Bobby - 11/26/2006 11:00:13 AM)
he has one of the worst records as an elected official in Virginia history.

as usual (littlepunk - 11/26/2006 12:58:00 PM)
novak is way off the mark.  i've never liked this guy.  and for him to write something to the effect of gilmore being the last republican candidate to carry populous northern virginia?  that really shows just how off the mark novak really is.  while that might be true, there's a 0% chance that happens - or is even close - next time around.

My how we forget (J.Scott - 11/26/2006 9:04:50 PM)
Whatever Mr.Gilmore choses to do he at the very least deserves respect. Many do not realize that Republicans began with the same misguided fervorwhen word first leaked that Jonathan Edwards was considering a run for President. He performed quite well in fact in all the primaries I recall to the dismay of his own states Republicans. They to thought he would get beaten up nationally. He did not. He was the stronger candidate. Independents supported him as well. In fact quite a few Republicans were thankful Kerry took the head of the ticket. Passion can be contagious. Gilmore like Edwards seems to bring that to the table. Whether you agree with his politics or not he his a dangerous canidate for any race. Gilmore has proven that he can win over moderate Democrats and Independents alike. We should remind ourselves of this. Keep an eye out for Gilmore's strategy if he choses to run for Warner's Senate seat if Warner choses not to run. Gilmore has won NVA before. Car tax or no car tax. All votes should be earned not taken for granted. There's a lesson in their somewhere. Gilmore is scary!! Some may want to hope for predictable Allen.

Good point (8thDistrictDonkey - 11/27/2006 12:30:47 PM)
Novak is right on one point--I think Gilmore will run for something.  The fact that Novak trumpets the fact that he won Northern Virginia shows that Novak's out of touch with Va. politics: the NOVA of '97 is very, very different than the NOVA of today.  I highly doubt Gilmore would do as well in '08 or '09 here.  However, even though WE don't approve of the job he did, there are voters out there who still like him, and choose their candidates with the "he seems like a nice guy" criteria.

I can relate because I actually bumped into him at the State Capitol in June.  My wife and I were with my sister taking a trip around the state, and we were at the statehouse just briefly looking around and taking pictures, when I noticed a BMW with a license plate that just said 3.  He saw us looking in his direction, and strode over and said hello, and introduced himself.  He asked where we lived, and we said Arlington, and he chatted with us for another few moments about our trip.

In no way am I saying I'd ever vote for the guy, but I could see how he might swing independents.  Hell, he was working us, even though we are from the bluest county in the state, and he wasn't even running for office.

My guess: Warner retires and Gilmore runs for his Senate seat.  If Warner doesn't retire...he might try again for Governor, despite the crowded field.

I wonder (mkfox - 11/27/2006 4:40:44 AM)
if a platform of "I promised to abolish a tax because it would get me elected but in reality destroyed the budget and I had no accomplishments as governor" will catapult anyone to the presidency.

Didn't it work for George I? (Andrea Chamblee - 11/27/2006 11:33:38 PM)
"Read my lips: No new taxes."

Good points, all . . . (cycle12 - 11/27/2006 12:54:20 PM)
. . . but I must repeat:  PLEASE run for something again, Mr. Gilmore.

PLEEEEEASE.

Thanks!

Steve

Could he raise any money? (Arlington Tom - 11/27/2006 10:13:25 PM)
I had thought Gilmore was regarded as a very weak RNC Chairman, and the national republicans had little use for him. In fact he was disqualified as a homeland security nominee early because of his weaknesses at the RNC.

My guess is that he'd have to prove a lot on the ground before he got any of the big donors attention?

On a side note, the a couple of mentions on the Sunday talk shows about Allen and how dead his national hopes are now. Nice to see the Confederate cowboy get his due.

Don't you mean (Gordie - 11/28/2006 8:13:18 AM)
Counterfiet cowboy?
Any Republican candidate can raise money. Even the worst who gets into the main race. Just look at Nixon.
Personally I think his record will get in the way. All we would have to do is get out the Democratic vote and he is gone. After Bush, I give the Moderates more credit then falling for another jerk.

Unelectable outside of Old Dominion (tobrien - 12/3/2006 11:35:49 AM)
Listen, Gilmore's just not going to play very well almost anywhere in the country.  Not only does he lack charisma, he's the kind of candidate that would make voters flock to the other side.  I say, bring it on.
