Incumbernt Dems are a HUGE Disappointment

Hopefully the newly elected Dems will be able to shape up the Democratic party.

Right now the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer are embracing the Republican's agenda in this lame duck Congress. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Senator Harry Reid doesn't allow the Bush agenda pusher Joseph Lieberman to set the Democratic agenda in the Senate.

Reid says that Gates will be a "shoo-in" for his nomination. So much for the seriousness they are taking for their role of oversight and accountability of the current White House. This appointment should be seriously assessed and take some time to do it...especially given Gates past record with the Iran Contra Scandal. They need to know that they are installing a Secretary of Defense who will stand up to VP Dick Cheney.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer is saying he will accommodate continuing to pay for Bush's endless invasion of Iraq and will even go along with temporarily increasing troop numbers.

Texas Democrat Jim Hightower hit the nail on the head when he stated so long ago that it would be nice to have two parties in Washington DC

I believe it's not too soon for concerned Americans to start creating a third party and flushing ALL the incumbent DEMS and REPUBLICANS down the nearest toilet if they continue their business as usual.

I can assure the Dems of one thing....this will be the last victory they will have for a long, long time if they proceed as they have in the past. The grassroots will not give them any more energy or time until they "show us the 'results'!!"

LOL...I AM a big Jim Webb supporter (mosquitopest - 11/22/2006 12:20:28 AM)
I knew Jim Webb was going to have his work cut out for him....

I wasn't thinking that the old entrenched DC Dems were going to be a large part of his work....but so it seems.

Thank heavens Dem Chris Dodd has come out on the right track and is proposing a bill that will seriously amend that horrid war commissions act.

Hopefully, I'll be more optimistic as the New Congress gets a little time to get to work.

I Agree (Gordie - 11/22/2006 9:09:07 AM)
Incumbant Democrats have lost their way on a lot of issues.
BUT as far as Gates goes, I really do not care if he is the new Secratery of Defense, in fact I hope he gets it. Just think of what may happen if the Demo's turn down his confirmation. Joe Lieberman may be the next appointee. Should he get it then the Republican Governor would appoint a Republican Senator and we would lose control of the Senate.
Some times in Politics, politicians do make sense and do the right thing. Heck I was sorry to see Rummy go, but then the fall guy for Bush is gone and now we will see just how dumb this president is.
Prayers from the other side have a hard time overcoming stupidity.
But then maybe the prayers were answered when Democrats took control, after all arragance cannot be prayed away it has to be given a slapped in the face for reality to set in.

Patience! (JC - 11/22/2006 9:31:36 AM)
Good grief, we haven't even taken control yet (we won't until 2007) and you have all these wild expectations and you are threatening another third party walkout like Nader 2000.

Yeah, we saw how great that worked out.

You need to get a grip and be patient.  Undoing the damage the Republicans have done is going to take time and patience.

This is "advanced government" and if you don't have the patience necessary for such a complicated process you'd better switch over to something less stressful, like gadget blogging.

P.S. you spelled "incumbent" wrong (JC - 11/22/2006 9:33:04 AM)
Anyone who is too impatient to spellcheck needs to take a timeout.

Lack of trust....not impatience... (mosquitopest - 11/22/2006 4:29:03 PM)
JC....sometimes the spell check isn't available and life does get hectic....besides it's okay to "not be perfect or always be right"....it often makes for better dialogue which is much needed.

I agree with you that we will all need patience for stuff to get ironed out.

However, since I'm an independent and my loyalty is to my country first I don't have much trust for the current democratic party.  (I have ZERO trust in the Republican party, btw)....

So the Dems, in general,  have to show me something....I do have a lot of trust in Jim Webb even though I know we don't see eye to eye on all the issues.

But if the Democratic party has a short time period to prove they are worthy of continued support....two years before the next election.

As far as the third party...it's like Jim Hightower said...he'd settle for a second party....we haven't had much of a choice in quite a while.

Personally I think we'd all be better off with more than three parties like what happens in Europe.  Our country is too diverse...two parties can't do a decent job representing the range of opinion in this country.

Also...it's too easy for the corporations to buy off two parties.....

Your answer shows a fundemental lack of understanding (JC - 11/24/2006 10:40:33 AM)
Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth parties survive and thrive in Europe because most European democracies have parliaments with proporational representation.  In the United States we have win/lose system which has the tendency to produce a two-party system.  The solution to your problem is not a third party.

Third parties always cause the party closest ideologically to the third party to lose.  This produces electoral catastrophes like 2000.  Ralph Nader is basically responsible for the War in Iraq, because he put Bush in the White House.

The solution to the problem you describe is to be more involved in the primary process, and, probably even more important, local Democratic committee politics.

This "I'm an independent" pose is basically false.  You are a Lefty, and as such you should be working within the Democratic Party to ensure that the party reflects your point of view.

The system worked this year because grassroots activists promoted Jim Webb over a candidate considered by most to be a party insider.  If we hadn't bothered to involve ourselves in primary politics, Harris Miller would have been the Democratic candidate.

Would we have won control of the Senate with Harris Miller at the top of the ticket? I don't know, maybe, but my choice was Jim Webb and I worked to make certain Webb was the candidate and that he won.

Third parties are for pouters.

Label me as you wish... (mosquitopest - 11/24/2006 10:47:01 AM)
I don't know how I could have ever bought myself to support the likes of a Harris Miller...

In my book Lobbyists should not be running for the position of Senator....they are a major problem with the corruption that is occurring in D.C.

But I'm "SICK" of this two party system which doesn't offer us much choice.....
