Watch Out for Sexist Commentary on Pelosi

A few sober commentators have rightly noted that media talking heads (and others) are resorting to the usual sexist stereotypes in discussing Nancy Pelosi.

Media Matters notes: http://mediamatters....

In a discussion about Pelosi's handling of the Democratic leadership contest between Reps. Steny Hoyer (MD) and John P. Murtha (PA) for House majority leader, in which Pelosi backed Murtha but Hoyer emerged victorious, Kondrake stated: "[W]e had the 'Hammer' -- [former House Majority Leader] Tom DeLay [R-TX] -- and now, we have the 'Wicked Witch of the West' ... Nancy Pelosi, who's twisting arms and ... having her aides making threats." ***

In her New York Post column -- "Call Her 'Nancy Shrew'?" -- also addressing Pelosi's handling of the Hoyer/Murtha contest, Orin-Eilbeck wrote: "Forget 'The Devil Wears Prada['] the hot show in Washington is 'The Shrew Adores Armani.' In just a few short days, House Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi has turned into a caricature of the shrill, petty woman boss."

Glenn Greenwald has more episodes of this sexist talk:  http://glenngreenwal...  Here's one he refers to from an oinker named Marty Peretz at The New Republic:berkshire-1

If Jane Harman is pushed out of her earned chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee, it will be only because Nancy Pelosi has mixed her own ideological armor with her personal pique.***Which reminds me of whom Pelosi reminds me: Bella Abzug. No, Pelosi is rather svelte, which Bella was not. Pelosi also doesn't wear a big-brimmed hat. But she talks unbearably empty prose. *** So why do I think of Bella when I think of Pelosi? Bella couldn't discern between a political difference and a personal war.***But, like Bella, she cannot separate personal from political differences. And where Pelosi's vanity goes, there, apparently, the House Democrats will follow.

I heartily agree with Greenwald's assessment:

This country has extremely serious issues facing it, and yet these self-styled "serious" journalists are already trying to cripple Pelosi's ability to do anything before she has even begun, all based on giggly chit-chat and gossipy garbage that has no legitimacy other than the fact that they all repeat it in unison on television and in print.

It's what these pundits and journalists do. They have pre-conceived, vapid notions about everything and everyone -- all driven by deep self-love for their own superior wisdom -- and they distort reality and crowd out sober analysis of everything that matters. Nancy Pelosi, and really everyone, would be well-advised not to listen to them and, above all, never adopt as a goal trying to please or satisfy them. They are frivolous and out of touch with everything that matters and should be treated as such.

I can't decide if being a woman translates into the deduction of 2 letter grades or 3.

These attacks are already backfiring from what I'm seeing on some non-political women geek lists.

The Washington Post was not immune to the silliness -- Robin Givhan did a whole column on Ms. Pelosi's clothes:  http://www.washingto...

Various letter writers in the Saturday morning Post reamed them out for it.

The Associated Press had a picture with a caption saying something like -- Minority Leader Pelosi, seen arriving at the Capitol in a grey Armani suit, ...

What I find interesting is how some male Republicans get almost apoplectic when talking about Hillary Clinton. I've seen a couple actually shaking when talking about her.  The human psyche is really strange.

but getting angrier by the minute.  Even phriendlyjaime has been attacked as a "hippy" for failing to be appropriately invisible.

There are several approaches to navigating invisibility.  Another way is to embrace it, e.g., that's right, keep on thinking I'm just an airhead only fit for baking cookies.

Pelosi obviously doesn't have invisibility as a choice.  Frankly, people who know the brand name of suits when the tags aren't showing scare the shit out of me.

I remember actual hippy days (PM - 11/19/2006 6:40:22 PM)
Yes, I'm a child of the late 1960's and had hair down to here

It truly was an interesting time

But how out of it were the ones who called PhJ one?

Men and women who are strong, smart, and speak out on important issues are those I cherish; I feel sorry for the dull and the conformer

I bet almost all of them have at least one suit for days where the cameras are coming out of nowhere, for example for those days when one assumes a leadership post.

I disagreed with Pelosi on Murtha, but the media pushed it as infighting led by a Wicked Witch. Clearly Hoyer had a solid majority. On the other hand, when racist Trent Lott (R-MS) won his #2 post by a single vote, there was not a peep about Republican infighting.

The Pelosi attacks look like more propaganda from the conservative media. Did you see we finally got a leak from one of the infamous FauxNews Talking Points that stated news shows have to push the point that the terrorists are celebrating the Democratic House Majority (including Pelosi's leadership)?  The Columbia Journalism Review responded with Tell Us Something We Don't Know!

Yes, and your point is? With all the righteous indignation that was spewed back in 2003 when ex-Fox Newser Charlie Reina claimed that the news division sends out a daily memo explaining to employees how to spin the news rightward, and other news-memo leaks over the years, this path is pretty well-worn.

Remember, Pelosi is a "local," from the Baltimore D'Alessandro family of pols. She started in politics at the same time as Hoyer. When you read her portrayed as a wacko SF liberal, remmeber the mid-Atlantic manufacturing town that can claim her just as well.

Well said (PM - 11/20/2006 6:37:23 PM)

The Fox news memo says emphasize this: (Andrea Chamblee - 11/20/2006 9:45:13 PM)
"[Emphasize that] the Dems will shed some fraternal blood before settling in.  Murtha will challenge Hoyer for the leadership. A former hawk v. a political hack."

As to the men mentioned there, Murtha is still a hawk; he's just not THEIR hawk, so they disparage him. Hoyer is the Whip, a job description that requires an ultimate political insider, whether Dem or Republican.
