Jim Webb Accepts

Was that the most fun "press conference" ever, or what?  This afternoon, at around 4:30 PM, Jim Webb accepted George Allen's concession, symbolically removing his boots to mark the successful end of his run for U.S. Senate.  That's right, say it with me, Jim Webb is Virginia's next U.S. Senator!  Say it with the couple hundred people at Arlington's Courthouse Plaza who were as pleased as can be that there will finally be positive CHANGE in this country - in large measure thanks to Jim Webb.

Senator-elect Webb's substantive remarks today weren't long, but he did say that he had received a gracious phone call from George Allen and that they would have lunch together next week.  Senator-elect Webb called for a halt to the politics of divisiveness, character assassination and distraction.  Webb specifically called on the President to denounce these campaign tactics that have so divided us.  He promised that he would be an independent voice in Congress, one that would represent the people who have no voice in the corridors of power.  He talked about never selling out his principles for anything.  He reiterated his top three priorities: reorienting our foreign policy and reaching a diplomatic settlement that allows us to extricate ourselves from Iraq; fighting for economic fairness and social justice; reining in the power of the President and asserting the power of the legislative branch.  Finally, Senator Webb said that he was indebted to the people who elected him and wouldn't forget them.

More photos after the "flip."

Funny side note (Eric - 11/9/2006 9:50:31 PM)
I got there in plenty of time to catch the whole thing, but with the crowds I ended up behind the stage to the side.  During the speechin' there wasn't much to see because of all the sign waving and the bad angle.  Oh well, I still had a great time and got to cheer on our next senator.

But just as it was ending, a few state troopers squeezed by to escort the Governor out.  And he came right by me.  Then Schumer and finally the man of the hour.  I got to shake their hands and congratulate Jim - something that became impossible moments later as the cameras and press created an impenetrable cocoon around Webb.

Guess my bad spot wasn't so bad after all.

To see (mkfox - 11/9/2006 10:08:11 PM)
"Allen concedes" on CNN then Webb's victory speech was just incredible, like some kinda new drug  haha

Ya know what Virginians, George Mason beat UConn again!

Was anybody else as (madgranny - 11/10/2006 2:48:59 PM)
irritated as I when first CNN and then MSNBC left the festivities before the end of Jim's speech?  I had to listen to all of George Allen's boo-hoo.  What's up with this?

They ran it twice on C-Span (Catzmaw - 11/10/2006 9:09:56 PM)
Once in the middle of the night, and once again this morning, in its entirety.  I watched both times.

yahoo group, more pics.

What a beautiful evening.  It was like we only began on that exact same spot just a few moments ago.  The days slipped backwards while standing there, thinking of the Shad Planking and the making of the 5,000 signs with a whole crew of new people at HQ stapling all those signs, the Clarendon Parade, the Kerry event, the Kitchen Table talks, the Take Back Virginia events, the gun shows, the Bluegrass events, the 4th Parades, the JJ Dinners and more JJ dinners, the Annandale Parade, the Fredericksburg events, the Sully Centerville Parade, the Edwards events, the CLinton event, the Robb event, the Wilder event, the Women for Webb event with Hillary, the event with Albright, and I left out 123 others.

Thanks for all you do Kevin. (Lowell - 11/10/2006 7:39:08 AM)
You were a big part of this victory, and you (and Robert) should savor it!!! :)

Congratulations to everyone who made this possible (jlmccreery - 11/9/2006 10:32:28 PM)
Please imagine what this election meant to an American and a Democrat living abroad in Yokohama, Japan. Just saw a note from a fellow Dem Abroad in Laos, talking about meeting a European lawyer who told him, "America has redeemed its honor." We who have cringed when faced with questions from friends asking, "What has happened to America?" can now be proud again.

I am sleeping better, honestly. (walkabout - 11/9/2006 10:58:21 PM)
Webb's speech was inspiring. He said what no one else has said. I wept.  If he needs an older community activist who has been on the firing line re: children, mental health, mediation, poverty, and the environment for 40 plus years,  I am available.

Video of the acceptance (PM - 11/9/2006 11:20:53 PM)
Just to make sure you know, the video of the acceptance speech can be viewed at:  http://www.wdbj7.com...

You all have spoken to eloquently . . .

It is good to see Judy Feder and David Poisson there...

The headline in this week's (madgranny - 11/10/2006 3:33:28 PM)
Warren Sentinel reads, "Allen, Wolf carry Warren, but Webb carries District 10". Now I know that my very rethug Front Royal paper is very disappointed.  I live just 2 miles outside of Front Royal and am delighted to be in that part of my district that went from red to blue!!
