Breaking: AP Calls it For Jim Webb!

By: Lowell
Published On: 11/8/2006 9:41:05 PM

From AP:

Democrats wrested control of the Senate from Republicans Wednesday with an upset victory in Virginia, giving the party complete domination of Capitol Hill for the first time since 1994.

Jim Webb's squeaker win over incumbent Sen. George Allen gave Democrats their 51st seat in the Senate, an astonishing turnabout at the hands of voters unhappy with Republican scandal and unabated violence in Iraq. Allen was the sixth Republican incumbent senator defeated in Tuesday's elections.

[...]

An adviser to Allen, speaking on condition of anonymity because his boss had not formally decided to end the campaign, said the senator wanted to wait until most of canvassing was completed before announcing his decision, possibly as early as Thursday evening.

Senator Webb (TurnVirginiaBlue - 11/8/2006 9:44:56 PM)
Congratulations!  Don't forget us!

&

Thank you to all of you on here especially (seems to be the congregating point) for the amazing ability to work together, form a real team and getting something amazing accomplished.  The location of, the drafting of, a very strong candidate the winning against an entrenched establishment system of the Democratic infrastructure and most importantly,
having the vision to see that an incumbent most believed untouchable could be beaten!!!!

Thank you!

CONFIRMED:ALLEN CONCEDES (kevinceckowski - 11/8/2006 9:45:22 PM)

Where? (Arlington Mike - 11/8/2006 9:53:46 PM)
I'm not seeing this anywhere.  I'm seeing that he will wait till tomorrow late in the day to see where the numbers are, and then will make a decision.

I live about a block from Webb HQ in Courthouse.  I bet if I open my windows, I can hear the cheering right now.

Don't tease us! (DanG - 11/8/2006 9:55:08 PM)
You can't post that without a link!  I don't think this "conceding" as much as saying that a recount is unlikely.

Allen (tvhost - 11/8/2006 10:57:56 PM)
I have not found where Allen has conceded yet... Where is that at.

ALLEN HASN'T CONCEDED! (mkfox - 11/9/2006 12:01:30 AM)
He won't until canvassing is done tomorrow, according to an anonymous Allen staffer quoted in the news stories.

Allen hasn't conceded (AERO - 11/9/2006 1:37:18 AM)
Allen hasn't conceded because there's still a few people he hasn't offended yet in this election.  Not til the last Macaca is counted.

Congrats (tvhost - 11/8/2006 9:46:00 PM)
We just need to wait to see what Allen is going to say.. Mr. Webb just do the best you can do for us in Washington.  Do the best for all of Virginia

Webb's first act (mkfox - 11/8/2006 9:52:51 PM)
as senator-elect was to applaud Rumsfeld's resignation  :D

GO WEBB!

I'm sure Bush... (Greg - 11/8/2006 10:01:45 PM)
... didn't exactly relish the prospect of Donald Rumsfeld siiting before the Senate Armed Services Committee facing Chairman Levin and Senator Webb -- part of the reason they want a fresh start with a new SecDef, someone who can't be blamed for getting us into Iraq.

Your father's words: (catbird - 11/8/2006 9:53:09 PM)
"You can get anything you want in this country and don't you ever forget it."

Senator Webb, thank you for believing.

To everyone out there at RK, thanks for sharing your thoughts, worries, concerns and energy.  What an incredible win for ALL Virginians (though some don't realize it yet).

I have NEVER (phriendlyjaime - 11/8/2006 9:56:56 PM)
sobbed so much out of happiness before tonight.  I have cried hard whan I was sad, and cried happy tears when I was happy, but I don't think I have quite yet experienced this exact emotion.  Pholks, our election has finally ended in our favor and in the favor of the United States of America.  This is a new day for all.

Congratulations, Senator Webb.  I look forward to your leadership and guidance.

Repeat many times (Arturo - 11/8/2006 9:58:35 PM)
Nananana, nananana, George Allen, goodbye!

I've got that MP3 (Greg - 11/8/2006 10:02:20 PM)
cranked on my PC right now!

Which also has irony value (Greg - 11/8/2006 11:10:41 PM)
... given that it's frequently used as a taunt against the visiting team at football games...  :)

You mean that it is kinda like the quarterback said "go long" and (Used2Bneutral - 11/9/2006 12:42:26 AM)
And then he threw an interception..... the election win was intercepted by someone who was a bit smarter and able to anticipate the plays....

It's a lot easier to win something and then enjoy the win without compromise when it was done with class and honesty.

Congratulations Senator, you make us all proud.... now use the tools that helped you get there and you will light years ahead of your stuffy compatriots on the hill..... Wow, the Internet as a tool of man-kind..... what a concept.... :)

And just after helping to start your main new activities by working on fixing Iraq, help us here in the Blogosphere first by killing the corrupted phone company paid for Senate Bill introduced by Senator Stevens and co-sponsored by George Allen. This law would maybe decrease the costs for cable TV bills in rich neighborhoods, but cause increases the cable costs in the poor areas.  But most of all the bill if it became law would put the control of the public internet and the line item billing for services for most everything all of us use daily on the web now at a flat rate.... ". Real "Net Neutality" is something very sacred to those that live here on the Blogs, Help us protect the freedom we now enjoy.

Now NBC- MSNBC Too (Arlington Tom - 11/8/2006 10:04:05 PM)
NBC has called VA for Webb and the Senate for the Democrats!
Republican leadership gives Allen 1 day to do it officially

Congratulations all-

add CBS to the list... (Jambon - 11/8/2006 10:35:19 PM)

Good work guys- Thanks for keeping me informed these last few months. Who would have thunk it?

You Did it! (rjl - 11/8/2006 10:13:55 PM)
From one who didn't really know what a blog was until about February and who jousted with a few here during the primay, let me be one of the first to say the obvious -- and I hope deeply explored and appreciated -- YOU did it.

Notwithstanding the customary nicities of sharing the victory, the fact remains that this race began with bloggers, got footing from bloggers, achieved momentum through bloggers, was sustained by bloggers and won because of bloggers.

This was the purest of example of a Netroots campaign.

I hope you will write much about it, exploring it in detail.

Congratulations to Lowell, Josh and all those whose names I don't know, but who can be found here on posts.

YOU did it.  And the country is now better because of it.

Be proud.  You deserve it.

This was crashing the gate. (Susan Mariner - 11/8/2006 10:26:08 PM)
Without a doubt.

Yep. Gate's down. God bless America. n/t (Kathy Gerber - 11/8/2006 10:34:30 PM)

The folks who started this blog (PM - 11/8/2006 10:23:37 PM)
like Lowell, just did something historic

A new majority in the Senate

A blogger initiated run

Providing lots of information to the public

Thanks

Thadd and I were JUST saying that... (phriendlyjaime - 11/8/2006 10:33:02 PM)
We started out as the most underground grassroots campaign one could possible have, and we based it around the internet.  Now, we have WON the Senate with our work and the icing on the cake is that surprise!  We also have the BEST candidate SENATOR one could hope for.

Again, congratulations, Senator Webb.  I cannot tell you how good it feels to say that.

Yes it was a beautiful thing. (Kathy Gerber - 11/8/2006 10:33:27 PM)
Thank you, Lowell, Josh, Eric, and everyone else too numerous to list.  You did make history and thanks to you, we can look forward to the strong honest leadership we so desperately need.

What's more -

RK collaterally kicked swift boat ass.

We all have to meet in person (kevinceckowski - 11/9/2006 9:38:07 AM)
one day.

Maybe the swearing in ceremony?
We can all wear the same color shirt or skirt, I don't care, just so we can SEE one another.

I ran into Susan Mariner at the Sheraton Victory event. I did not know it was Susan.  I just said, hey, I helped decorate this event.....and she said, "What is your name?" and I said "Kevin Ceckowski" and she said, "Oh my gosh I am Susan Mariner."
We hugged and kept talking for some time.

:)

Political cynicism washed away (Tink - 11/8/2006 10:30:19 PM)
Wow.  Just wow.  After 2004 I had given up.  I thought there was no way to beat these guys.  Virginians showed you can out vote their nasty games.  People got mad.  Virginia elected a Senator today who is going to make an incredible difference.  The soldiers in Iraq will cheer when they hear this.  (And yes - this I know.)

Way to go everybody.  What an incredible, affirming experience this has been.

Am I Late??? (Newport News Dem - 11/8/2006 10:37:29 PM)
I just got home from the canvass of Newport News and was all giddy to post that Jim PICKED UP 190 additional votes tonight.

Or I am giddy from a total lack of sleep and a wee bit too much scotch at the Webb shindig at Tysons Corner!

Virginia has a great Senator and Statesman who will do us all proud!

Bloggers Rock! Well Done Senator-Elect Webb!!! (relawson - 11/8/2006 10:47:09 PM)
Without blogger support, I don't think this would have ever happened.  That goes for all the grass-roots support.  In races like this where you have one candidate with tons of money, hard work is the only way to overcome.

Even with the Republican misteps this election, this was a huge fight.  It was like two heavyweights going 12 rounds, and then in the 12th round deciding to go one more.  If you've ever seen the movie Cinderella Man (Russell Crowe) that is what this reminds me of.  All the pieces seemed to fall together.  Somehow.

I stand amazed at what people working together can actually accomplish - even when all odds are against them.  I won't soon forget this race.  It gives me hope.

NBC/CNN/CBS have declared Webb the winner, too! (lwumom - 11/8/2006 10:47:43 PM)
Congrats to everyone at the Webb campaign.  Today, more than ever, I am PROUD to be a Virginian!  I talked to my youngest daughter a few minutes ago.  The 04 election was her first national election and she was devastated when John Kerry lost.  Last night, she said she watched the returns until it got late and it looked like Webb was behind.  I think she was fast losing faith in being able to make a difference by voting.  What a surprise when she saw the news this morning!  We're all elated!  Great job, guys!!

PS--I don't even know what the results of the California elections were....I was too focused on VA!!

Sic Semper Tyrannis (Kindler - 11/8/2006 10:52:02 PM)
What we have all witnessed and taken part in here was an act of history.

Knocking off George Allen (a conservative presidential contender in a red state -- impossible!) and delivering the Senate to the Democrats is the equivalent of David killing Goliath AND Godzilla with a single blow.

230 years ago, fed-up Virginians led a successful revolution against a tyrant named George -- in the name of government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Let history record that we've just done it again.

consider the influence of bloggers (teacherken - 11/8/2006 11:00:32 PM)
we all know Webb, but remember the party was backing Morrison in MT but bloggers pushed Tester, who won a seat that Morrison would not have won.

The party opposed McInerny but he succeeded in defeating the odious Pombo when the party's choice would have crashed and burned.

Even some of the netroots candidates who lost ran so well they forced the Republicans to spend money on races they would otherwise have taken for granted, and hence not have sufficient funds to carpetbomb a race like Webb's the way they would have done previously.  So we need to thank the efforts and the candidates in racesn like Eric Massa and Charlie Brown and Bill Winter.  And we have to wonder what else we might have won if the $3 million spent by national committees on Tammy Duckworth had been spread around - what might a Larry Kissell have accomplished with 100,000 more?  Look what Carol Shea-Porter did with NO party support in NH.

We will now have elected public officials who understand the power of netroots, who are willing to let us have a say - some will be people who already held office but have come to know us.  Look at all the politicians who now regularly visit dailykos.

And from my own experience of getting to know politians as diverse as Brad Miller from NC, Nick Lampson from TX, Pat Murphy from Penna, current and future congressmen, the Governor of Iowa, many wonderful and dedicated political operatives like Steve, Joe Trippi, and the like

we have demonstrated something.  This campaign and Tester's are both clear examples of what can happen when politics is done in a way that invites and involves people.  And if you think about it, that conforms very much with Jim's message.

I'm tired.  Compared to some here I played a relatively minor role in this victory.  But I remember when Frank O'Leary first was elected in Arlington, some two decades ago.  He won by just over 80 votes, so everyone who had helped could claim that what s.hedid had made the difference.  Think what each of us can say - our phone calls, our door knocks, our lit drops - while it is not so close that each can take credit, we also know that without all of our participation the victory might not have been possible.

I am a school teacher.  And I have just completed one of the most important lessons I will ever teach.  And about this I may eventually blog.  My students all knew about my involvement in the campaign.  TYhey saw how an ordinary citizen can participate in making a difference.  A few current and former students were inspired to participate in their own elections (although one just contacted me, because he was hoping to work on Allen's presidential run! - hey, I don't brainwash them).  Perhaps more of them will be convinced that politics can make a difference, and will be there to help make one for us in the future.

Sorry, I am not too coherent.  Time for sleep.

When you're "not too coherent," Ken (Lowell - 11/8/2006 11:11:02 PM)
you're still better than 99% of us.  We are not worthy!! :)

oh, and Lowell? (teacherken - 11/8/2006 11:01:32 PM)
when are you going to schedule Senator elect Webb for some live blogging to thank the netroots over at daiykos?  Might be an important thing to do.

I will ask him (Lowell - 11/8/2006 11:07:55 PM)
Thanks, Ken.

do it here !!! (loboforestal - 11/8/2006 11:32:09 PM)
He already did Kos.

I'll see your Live Blog and raise you one..... (Used2Bneutral - 11/9/2006 8:33:51 AM)
How about Jim Blogging live on RK and we do it at that TV studio where we will broadcast/record it live as well as on cable and streaming on the web AND make it available for everyone to watch/download immediately afterward from Google... (we can supply DVDs)

Kinda like adding a face to a name.... adding the behind the scenes comments and studio dialog in a video diary of the actual live blog as a digital "keepsake". The hour long Virginia Blogging show back in September that Mark Levine did with Kenton and Ben Tribbet has been viewed complete or downloaded almost a thousand times by people ALL OVER the entire US.

Lowell, try and get us a Monday night SOON from 7 to 8 PM..

We can help Jim say "Thank-You" to a whole lot of people in one appearence no matter where they are in Virginia or on the web.... I know a lot of people who donated a lot of money who would love to participate or at least watch.

JIm is getting some much-needed rest right now (Lowell - 11/9/2006 8:48:02 AM)
...not to mention catching up with friends and family.  We'll see in a few weeks.  Thanks. - Lowell

I'm with Lowell (DanG - 11/9/2006 11:37:27 AM)
Let's give our Senator-elect some time to rest, be with family, and prepare for the next six years.

I totally agree as well, but lets schedule something in early Dec. (Used2Bneutral - 11/9/2006 12:35:15 PM)
Before the holidays sucks everybody's schedule up....

there is another reason.... The big phone companies are still trying to take the Internet from the organizations, companies, and the individual users that have really grown it to what it is..... The ability to replace the classic phone services based products has them doing what ever they can to recapture the market control they enjoyed for generations with standard phones.  The social and political impact of what we do is definitely recognized, but we could lose it in the lame duck session if we aren't vigilent, because of the pending federal laws in the house and Senate.... and you know the lobbyists will be right back there fighting for it again... they got it all the way through the house with LOTS of democrats voting for it, because they didn't understand what they were actually voting for.

Blogging as we know and lots of other things could change drastically if they get their way.... As the president/CEO of ATT/SWB said a few months back, "if someone is going to continue to eat my lunch, its going to be me!!"

This month's issue of Vanity Fair (Brad Pitt on the front) (PM - 11/8/2006 11:32:52 PM)
at page 183 has an amusing  picture of George Allen shaking hands with Ahnold, with Mark Foley and some young blond guy behind him and Katharine Harris next to him.

Lowell, my wife said to congratulate you too.

Webb is all over the press (TurnVirginiaBlue - 11/8/2006 11:33:59 PM)
So, I guess the whole world knows who Jim Webb is now!!!!

Remember the name recognition numbers just a few months ago?

What I'm looking forward to (DanG - 11/8/2006 11:40:11 PM)
Allen's concession speech, and Webb's second victory speech.

Thanks to everyone on this site (Barbara - 11/8/2006 11:47:54 PM)
For motivating me to get involved like I have never done before.  I was reluctant to make the calls and do the lit drops, but I did.  I never wrote a letter to the editor before, but I did (two were published).  I worked the entire day at the precinct and loved it. (My historically Republican precinct went to Webb.)

Like everyone else, I'm very, very, happy.  Thanks to all.

Webb- the Giant Killer!!! (thegools - 11/8/2006 11:50:06 PM)
While I certainly agree that the netroots and the grassroots got this thing going, we did not win this thing alone.  This candidacy grew much bigger than its roots and became national, energizing progressives and others around Virginia and the country.  From the latest count it energized exactly 1,173,805 Virginians, that is precisely 7,316 more than were inspired by Allen.

What this race has shown me is the power the netroots had in choosing a great candidate and infecting the general public with our enthusiam for him.  Also, no one will ever be able to say that "the powers that be" chose our newest Senator.  And alas, though it started here,  Jim is no longer ours.  He belongs to all Virginians and to America.

Congratulations Jim, Hong and the crew (hereinva - 11/9/2006 2:02:23 AM)
The weather was miserable but the voters kept coming. There was change in the air. Thank-you for running and demonstrating that you don't need to be a "politician" to run for office. I haven't celebrated yet...and will at least enjoy this moment. If there is a re-count we will be ready and fully prepared.

Winning back the Senate is frosting on the cake and Virginia, yes THAT Virginia made the difference. Welcome to America and welcome back to Virginia.

Virginia (Arlington Mike - 11/9/2006 9:04:35 AM)
You know, one of the things that makes me most proud here is that Virginia is in the news for all the right reasons.  Not only did we play a role, but we made things turn towards the good guys.  After so much criticism for the Commonwealth after the macaca comment - people wondering how anyone could vote for such a hateful man as Allen, asking how Virginians could laugh at that joke at the event and continue to support Allen, etc. - it's so great to see Virginia geting some positive press.  It says something about the state and its place moving forward.

Victory for Jim Webb (seamusotoole - 11/9/2006 9:39:14 AM)
What a roller coaster ride.  This election has restored my faith in the political process.  After the Kerry election I was devastated.  It is also wonderful to see that a good guy can actually win and win fair and square.  I am so glad that Virginians prevailed and showed the rest of the country that we aren't into racism and bigotry in our state.  For a time I was almost embarrased to be a Virginian with all eyes watching us and laughing at us.

I personally want to thank the grassroots people for all of their hard work.  I have made many many friends and new acquaintances through this campaign.  I really feel like I had the opportunity to get to know Senator Webb and what he stands for.  Therefore, it wasn't difficult to get out there and campaign for him and cheer him on.

Lowell, Josh, Jessica, Larry Byrne, Dan Gray, Adam, Mary
Detwiler, Sara John, etc. etc. etc. You guys are the best!!
Thanks to everyone who volunteered all over the state of Virginia from Buena Vista to Charlottesville to Lynchburg
to Newport News to Hampton to Richmond to Roanoke and last but not least to NOTHERN VIRGINIA who truly rocks. Thanks also to all of those places in Virginia I didn't include.  We all made this victory happen and have made positive changes in our state.

Chris Ambrose and Sue Langley you are the BEST.
