This will help me get out of my bad mood about Virginia (which aside from the Webb victory and the non-competitive races was a total loss).

It looks like Rummie can't imagine taking the heat of congressional inquiry!

What a great toppling, although the real target is Bush, but this has to neutralize his insanity to some degree!

Bonus round!

That sound you heard coming from Washington was the little rat footsteps leaving the sinking ship. More to scurry away as the bright lights of change shine.

dailykos has some detailed of the new guy, Bob Gates

Of course they cannot get anyone who isn't corrupt.

I have a funny feeling when the light is shown on the massive war profiteering/raiding the coffers on this people are going to want an impeachment.

I personally just want to flush these people, fix the corruption and move on...

but I think it's going to be huge.

Robert Gates? (Bubby - 11/8/2006 3:49:48 PM)
If George Bush wants Robert Gates as SecDef he better get him through Congressional confirmation before the New Congress comes in. I'm sure they'll want to ask him about his Iran Contra shenanigans.

Scapegoat - sort of (Eric - 11/8/2006 3:16:26 PM)
Given that Bush already nominated someone to take his place, this was in the works.  Plain and simple - if GOP won yesterday it's stay the course with Rumsfeld.  If they lost (YEAH!) he's the top fall guy.

Bush won't be able to blame it all on Rumsfeld, but certainly he'll try to deflect a good bit of criticism toward his buddy Don.  Not that Rumsfeld doesn't deserve it, he most certainly does, but look for Bush to use him as an excuse for the failure in Iraq and for losing the election.

Remember, Bush never made a mistake and he's not about to start now.  ha.

Furthermore... (Arturo - 11/8/2006 4:35:57 PM)
He "resigned" today so as to divert the MSM attention away from the fact that the Dems cleaned House and took over the Senate.

Rumsfeld (JPTERP - 11/8/2006 3:25:55 PM)
I hope this changes things, but I'm a little skeptical.  The problem all along has been the management up the chain of command.  The buck stops with W.

The other side of this that bewilders me, is that less than a week ago, G.W. Bush said that Rumsfeld and Cheney would be serving out the next 2 years.  Obviously G.W. wants to avoid confrontation with the congress on this, but this action only undercuts his credibility even further.

I still hope that something positive can come out of this situation.

George forgot one thing, The New Sec of Defense has to clear the new congress. Not the old rubber stamp congress

Not really (Bubby - 11/8/2006 3:51:51 PM)
I'm sure the current disgraced Repub Congressional leadership will do their all to get Gates through confirmation by the end of the month. Mark my words.  That's why Bush did this change now.

I think you're right (libra - 11/8/2006 5:01:41 PM)
Otherwise, there'd have been no reason for the rum bush. Er... bum rush. But, even so, I'm happy to see Rumsfailed gone.

And I just got a call (pre-recorded, but still) from our new Speaker of the House, thanking me for the difference I've made with my contributions to Emily's List. Oh, bliss :)
