Jim Webb's 1 AM Victory Photo

I wasn't there last night for a variety of reasons (couldn't get parking at the hotel, was exhausted after working from 6 AM until 7 PM at my precinct, wanted to follow the results...). I'm really bummed I wasn't there (although I'm glad I got 5 hours of sleep!), but thanks to CW Dean for this photo, taken at 1:08 AM.  According to CW, at that time there were only about 200 people remaining, not counting media and staff.  The die-hards!

Anyway, congratulations to our next U.S. Senator from the Commonwealth of Virginia!  (pending recount that is, and concession from George Allen!)  Also, congratulations to all of YOU people who made this happen.  Remember, even though the media probably won't give us credit, this was a netroots victory through and through.  It was also a victory for Jim Webb, of course, and his brand of honesty, integrity and courage.

Finally, it was a victory for a Webb campaign team that received WAY too much criticism, and WAY too little credit, from people who generally didn't know what on earth they were talking about.  Great job to the finance, media, research, and field teams, to Jessica Vanden Berg and Steve Jarding and Adrienne Christian, to our field offices, to our "Women for Webb" and "Veterans for Webb" and "Adelante con Webb" and African American outreach (Michael Brown) and...  Last but DEFINITELY not least, thanks to all the amazing volunteers who really made this campaign rock and roll.  You guys are awesome!

Don't forget a certain senator (beachmom - 11/8/2006 9:01:19 AM)
who endorsed Webb before the primaries and funded his GOTV effort against Harris Miller.  There were many people involved in this victory.  Webb being the biggest part of it all!

But just wanted to say, in addition -- you Webb bloggers ROCK!!!!!  Your enthusiasm was contagious, and I am looking forward to the day that Webb is declared the winner and doubles the IQ of the Senate (Allen out, Webb in).

I went home a bit after 11 (teacherken - 11/8/2006 9:19:41 AM)
because I have to teach, but when I got home found I was too wired to sleep.

When I left the state was showing us down by 12,000 with Arl and FFX central absentees not counted, a chunk of Prince William, and some scattered precincts around the state

what was infuriating is that networks were getting figures from a different source than the State's webpage, so that for a while networks had Webb ahead by about 3,000 while state had him behind by the same amount.

When I left I was being assured by people that war room was sure when all out were counted that Jim would be up.

Once state posted him ahead, and I could see what was out, I relaxed.  Unless both the state and whoever the other source is (probably AP) have inverted some figures, it will hold, and hold narrowly.

But after Creigh Deeds last year, a win by any margin is sweet.

I was there until about 10:15pm (thegools - 11/8/2006 10:35:38 AM)
because i have to teach too.  When i left the state website was showing Webb down 18,000 votes.  I went through all the counties and could not see how Webb could pull it off.  I got home and didn't watch TV.  I was grumpy and woke up depressed until my brother called and told me Webb was up 2800.  Then he called to say it was an 8000 vote Webb lead.

What a mood changer.  I am stoked!

What is the law on recounts? (relawson - 11/8/2006 10:45:44 AM)
It looks like Jim Webb (or more likely Senator Webb now) may in fact lead by more than 0.5%.  As I understand, below that triggers an automatic recount.  If he comes out above that in the final numbers, is a recount still likely?
