I finally got it.  From yesterday's paper.  A strong endorsement from a paper that normally backs republicans.

Apparently you have to subscribe. (Lowell - 11/2/2006 12:21:54 PM)
But the teaser says "Virginia needs a senator who will serve the people of the commonwealth and not someone who submits to the will of the president, his party and any special interests that may have corrupted both."

RE: Highlights . . . (JPTERP - 11/2/2006 12:32:30 PM)

Virginia needs a senator who will serve the people of the commonwealth and not someone who submits to the will of the president, his party and any special interests that may have corrupted both.

Another good point

Webb, who served under President Reagan as assistant defense secretary and secretary of the Navy, will bring something that is in short supply in Washington - dissent. We have not seen any criticism or honest debate from Allen in the last six years.

It is possible to be loyal to one’s president and nation and still challenge his desires. It is possible to be a patriot and still question the effects of a Patriot Act.

It is possible to serve your constituents - in fact, you are more likely serving your constituents rather than your party - if you occasionally question your party leadership.

All too often George Allen did none of the above.

The key word they use is "Independent."  How true.  They admit they don't always disagree with Allen, but they are bothered by how in-step he is with the President, and how he's been afraid to rock the boat.
