Iran Defies West, Resumes Nuclear Work
This afternoon, the AP reported that Iran "stepped up its confrontation with the West over its nuclear program, restarting work at a uranium conversion facility Monday in a move the United States and Europe have warned will prompt them to seek U.N. sanctions."

Meanwhile...

North Korea Nuclear Talks Adjourn Without Agreement
The Washington Post reports that "[a]fter 13 days of arduous negotiations, diplomats at six-nation talks on North Korean nuclear disarmament acknowledged Sunday that they had reached a deadlock and would return home without agreement on how to revive long-stalled efforts to create a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula."

And guess what, if it comes to a confrontation with either or both of these countries, we've got a couple of major problems.  First, with regards to Iran, we're in deep trouble over oil supplies, given that we've done absolutely nothing to reduce our oil consumption or import dependence under Republican "leadership."  In fact, our oil consumption and imports have both increased, as have oil prices -- to $60 per barrel and beyond.  Unfortunately, if it comes to sanctions or military action on Iran, expect the price at the pump to go higher - a LOT higher.  Just remember, when the proverbial shit hits the proverbial fan, who's to blame for not providing any leadership on this issue.

Second, with regards to both Iran and North Korea, we've got almost no military option given the fact that our armed forces are bogged down in a Vietnam-like quagmire in Iraq.  Again, thanks to George W. Bush for leading us into disaster, for no good reason, and all on a bunch of  wild exaggerations (Iraq about to nuke Washington DC?  Not!) and outright lies (Saddam connected to 9/11?  Double NOT!)

The bottom line is that our foreign policy's a disaster, and it's about to get a lot worse with Iran and North Korea sitting out there about to go nuclear on our asses.  Great work, Bush, DeLay, Frist et al.  Great work.
