John Warner Praises His Fellow Marine, Jim Webb

Whoops!  Another Allen "supporter" isn't staying on message.  Yesterday, given an opportunity to criticize his old friend Jim Webb, Senator John Warner declined.  Instead, Warner had this to say of his fellow Marine:

I respect his military record. It's far more significant than was mine. I leave it to George Allen to define his opponent.

Hmmm, very interesting.  Sounds to me like John Warner still greatly admires Jim Webb, about whom he said, early this year, "He has the potential of being a serious and formidable candidate."  Or maybe Senator Warner, "a great admirer of WebbGÇÖs military career," continues to feel "some loyalty to Webb, who once served on WarnerGÇÖs Navy secretary staff."

Something tells me that Jim Webb and John Warner are going to work very well together in the U.S. Senate.  I look forward to it, as should all Virginians!

Well. (Kathy Gerber - 11/2/2006 7:35:21 AM)
Allen can't define himself out of a wet paper bag. His biggest opponent is himself. He's demonstrated time and again that smears are at the very heart of what he is all about.

Warner knows (catbird - 11/2/2006 8:13:48 AM)
Warner knows Webb better than most of us.  He knows the caliber of his intellect, his patriotism, his service and his potential as a senator.

He knows our country needs Webb's service in the Senate.

How can anyone put party ahead of country at this time?  I think Warner will have nothing but praise for Webb after Webb wins on Tuesday.  He will help put to bed any fears that the fear mongering Allen campaign has spewed.

My great disappointment is that Warner, at this stage of his life and his career, followed orders and gave support (though not too convincing or enthusiastic) to the weaker candidate.

Warner chairs the POWERFUL Armed Services Committee (thegools - 11/2/2006 1:38:10 PM)
If a Webb victory throws control of the Senate to the Dems, Warner loses that chairmanship and its associated POWER.

(People in power tend to like it....losing it they tend not to favor.)

Allen=Continued Chairmanship.  It is that simple.

But what has he done with that power??? (Loudoun County Dem - 11/2/2006 1:44:26 PM)
I like John Warner but he has caved repeatedly to the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld cabal.

He did not press to hold those responsible for Abu Ghraib accountable.

He caved on the torture bill and allowed them to kill Habeus Corpus.

He has not held hearings on the repeated stop loses and other troops abuses that have stretched our armed services to the breaking point (at a time when world tensions are on the rise).

Perhaps it is time for Warner to lose his chairmanship for the greater good.

Maybe he needs a Jiminy Cricket (Catzmaw - 11/2/2006 3:24:45 PM)
No one on that committee has done much of anything, being the grips of the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld cabal.  Now it seems that Warner is bestirring himself to take notice and do something.  Agreed, he's a day late and a dollar short, but he still carries a lot weight on that committee, even if he loses that chairmanship.  He sounds as if he values Webb's judgment and will be more likely with Webb's encouragement to do the right thing and step up his criticisms and efforts at change.  At this point in his life and his career, what would he have to lose?

I see Webb's function in the Senate as being a kind of conscience.  He's the one candidate least likely to simply go along to get along, just like Senator Moynihan, whom he admires.  Moynihan used to piss off people in both parties, but he was always intelligent, well-prepared, and very articulate about his positions.  Wish we'd listened to him more back then.

Jim Webb gives (Gordie - 11/2/2006 3:54:25 PM)
John Warner an out. Should John Warner decide not to seek re=election and retire when his term is up, he knows he has a good replacement in Jim Webb. Jim will take care of Virginia;s Military accademies and the armed forces. What better then to back a very good candidate if he can win this election. Basiclly John said "If you can win, the job may be yours"

I could forgive (libra - 11/3/2006 12:30:24 AM)
Warner for his support of Allen; it's a matter of politics and party is party (even though I do not, myself, agree with "my country, right or wrong" and the same goes for the "my party..."). But I wil never, ever, forgive him for "folding", like a wet hankie, on the Torture Bill. That wasn't politics; it was *policy*. I've learnt to accept Specter as the hot-air ballon which collapses at the first prick and ditto for McCain, but I had thought more of Warner, so it felt like a personal betrayal (and yes, I'm mean enough to have written down the names of the 12 DEM Judases who betrayed me and my country even more. Some of them are running for re-election this year and I have a hard time geting excited about their results, even though I know we need them to win)

I expect Jim Webb will work well with John Warner, but then I suspect Jim Webb would work well with anyone except a raving maniac or an out-and-out crook. At the same time, I hope that in another couple of years, Jim won't have to work with *John* Warner, but with will have the pleasure of working with *Mark* Warner.

I read somewhere that Warner asked Webb to run for (PM - 11/2/2006 9:46:55 AM)
the Senate seat now occasionally occupied by Allen.  I think it was in the Washington Post.

J Warner did try to recruit Webb.. (drmontoya - 11/2/2006 10:03:43 AM)
They are old and very good friends.

I still like John Warner, but I wish he didn't do that side by side TV apperance with Allen.

He did that side by side for his Chair (DanG - 11/2/2006 11:14:34 AM)
He's Chair of the Senate Committee on Armed Services.  It's very likely he may lose that Chair is Webb wins along with either McCaskill or Ford.  He's doing what he has to do for his power, not because he is so keen on Allen.

Jim Webb and Sen. Warner (Arturo - 11/2/2006 10:36:45 AM)
will work well together in the Senate.  It just dawned on me: as we were fighting the BRAC commission decisions, Sen. Warner was at a townhall meeting with Jim Moran, Tom Davis, and Gov. Warner.  Where in the world was George Allen?  That's how much he cares about Northern Virginia and its workers.

. . . and gun owner (vadem28 - 11/2/2006 12:10:30 PM)
From Jim Webb:

Dear Virginia Sportsmen and Gun Owners,

As a long-time member of the National Rifle Association, you can imagine my surprise when I received a mailing in the form of an Orange Card saying "VOTE FREEDOM FIRST ON NOVEMBER 7 - VOTE GEORGE ALLEN FOR THE U.S. SENATE!"

I am writing this letter to make certain that no Virginia sportsmen or gun owner has any question concerning my stand on Second Amendment and sportsmen rights.

To be clear, I value and will defend your right of self-defense. As a Marine combat veteran who shot "double expert" and once taught the .45 pistol to Officer Candidates, and as a former Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan, I know first hand the importance of armed self-defense by law-abiding citizens as a deterrent to criminals, and in the long term, to would-be tyrants.

I have possessed a concealed-carry permit for many years, and shoot regularly. I have made no secret during this campaign of the fact that I carry. I support a national concealed carry permit. I also will sponsor a bill in the United States Senate that repeals the National Park Gun Ban that disarms only law-abiding citizens in Interior Department/National Park Service across Virginia. And I intend to get it to the floor for a vote.

Please compare this background with that of my opponent. Individual Second
Amendment Rights are ingrained into my Scots-Irish culture, and I stand where I
stand.

On the sporting side, I support opening up more Federal land for sportsmen. Federal land is, after all, the property of all Americans. In addition, I support air and water quality measures that improve wildlife habitat. I will be monitoring the "Farm Bill" and its wildlife habitat programs to make sure that Virginia and our abundance of National Forest lands gets its fair share of funding for our wildlife programs.

You can also imagine my frustration when I received my NRA magazine and saw there was a question mark beside my grade. Only after complaining to the NRA did they finally post my grade on their website. I got an "A" which was purposefully omitted from the NRA orange card that, to my shock, urged a vote for George Allen. The question is, why did they not mention my own lifetime of support on these issues?

In order to fully clear the air, I am making public my 2006 NRA Candidate Survey. You can find that at www.webbforsenate.com/nrasurvey.pdf I challenge George Allen to do the same. We should have no more secret surveys in Virginia when it comes to our right to keep and bear arms.

Please help me clear up this deliberate distortion by an organization that I must regretfully conclude has more on its agenda than protecting the earned Second Amendment rights of our citizens.

Wow (TurnVirginiaBlue - 11/2/2006 2:15:26 PM)
I've seen other things like that, where they are endorsing the GOP candidate in spite of the fact that the Dem candidate has a better record on their issue.

Makes me wonder what their "issue" really is!

Boy, Jim clearly likes guns!

Sweet! (Doug in Mount Vernon - 11/2/2006 1:06:01 PM)
If this gets wide exposure, this will hurt GFA more than any backlash against his illiteracy attack, or his volunteers stupid reaction to a gadfly in a hotel!

Let it be known that BOTH Warners of Virginia LOVE AND SUPPORT---JIM WEBB!!!

interesting (TurnVirginiaBlue - 11/2/2006 2:08:30 PM)
Me thinks they want Webb for his military expertise but cannot come out and say that due to party "loyalties".

Come on people, the nation is in terrible trouble!  It's time to get competence, ability and expertise into a government leadership position and get rid of the pandering, focus group, lobbyists' wet dream, corruption laden people out!

No question if you care about the nation, which is the choice of who you want to work with - Jim Webb.

Now, how many votes, hearings and committee meetings did Allen miss?  Wasn't he busy staying in Iowa and never coming to talk to the people of Virginia?

JW-JW the beginning of a better partnership (Lisa - 11/2/2006 6:37:19 PM)
Virginia is for former Navy Secretaries.  Toss the  Confederate wannabe.

I think both JWs would work extremely well together as both are pragmatists and without blinders about Iraq or the administration's competence. Warner had to support Allen in public, but may not be that unhappy Wednesday morning, whatever the result.

Richmond Times Disgrace noted recently that Warner and Allen votes diverge most among all Senators with colleague from same party.  (Think about that.  Specter and Santorum are more in synch than Allen and Warner.)

Warner is just trying to save his butt now Webb is going to win! (Caesonia - 11/2/2006 9:41:26 PM)
I had respect for him, but it has really dwindled over the last 4 years. He has waffled at best, and simply lain down for Bush and CO at worst. He also stood behind Allen in these last few weeks, which means he stood to be counted with that sack of crap. Now it looks like Webb is going to win, and he is suddenly changing his attitude? Yeah, well...if you respected him as a Marine, you should have simply said to Allen..." Tough tookies, you have said some truly stupid things, you are on your own."

Yeah, I think Webb will work well with Warner, but I won't be voting for Warner again, especially if Mark runs against him.
