A cogent remark from Frankie Schaeffer

There has been a lot of coverage of the fact that Frankie Schaeffer has now publicly cut ties with the Republican party.  You can read the other diaries, here and at dailykos, about the proximate cause, which was a scurrilous email sent out by Allen supporters.

Frankie Schaeffer left evangelical christianity for (Eastern) Orthodox Christianity a number of years ago.  He has been somewhat controversial there because of some of his theological positions.  As noted in his column, his son enlisted (USMC - semper fi) a number of years ago, which has somewhat reshaped his views on many things. His Father Francis Schaeffer was one of the most important figures in 20th century Evangelical Christianity.  Which makes part of what he wrote that much more powerful.
The entire column by Schaeffer can be found Here

I note particularly the following excerpts

But enough is enough. I've had it with Republican smears.

The Webb e-mail is the embodiment of the cynical Republican strategists, some of whom must know the difference between fiction and nonfiction. Was Agatha Christie a murderer because she wrote about murder?

According to the Allen camp's logic, God would be a pedophile, too. After all, we Christians believe God inspired the Bible. And God-the-author chose to include the "sleazy" story about Lot offering to send out his young virgin daughters to be raped by the men of Sodom.

The Bible has masturbation scenes, rape, pedophilia and God's favorite man GÇô King David GÇô warming himself with a young virgin in his old age. He's the same man God tells us committed murder after he indulged his peeping Tom fantasies.

Lucky for God-the-author that He's not running against George Allen.

Whoa! (Rebecca - 11/1/2006 10:55:06 PM)
Don't forget. The Bible also has a tale of incest. I think God is in hot water.

Who? (SueBonnetSue - 11/2/2006 12:11:28 AM)
Sorry, I've never heard of his guy.

but evangelical Christians have (teacherken - 11/2/2006 11:00:34 AM)
his dad, Francis Schaeffer, was one of the most important evangelical Christian leaders of 2nd half of 20th century.

Even though Frankie became an (Eastern) Orthodox Christian a number of years ago, he is a wellknown writer whose things like children's books are still quite popular with evangelicals.  That he is disavowing the Republicans will carry some weight in that community.

Also note where his op-ed piece appeared - in Dallas!

Can we spell backlash? (Silver Fox - 11/2/2006 9:49:43 AM)
This is just one more example of how Allen's campaign is augering into the dirt.  Or in another phrase my late husband, an Air Force pilot, taught me, he's about to "Buy the Farm" and my feeling is, not a moment too soon!  Let's all work to GOTV and send George Allen to retirement (and hopefully obscurity) where he can sit on the front porch and spend his days spitting  tobacco slime over the front railing.  Or maybe he'll miss and slime his own boots.  He sure has shown a real talent for that recently.

Folks -- we need that email. (JohninCville - 11/2/2006 12:06:29 PM)
Shaeffer's column says that Webb's fiction makes it appear that Webb himself is a pedophile.  After Foley, it says, "we don't need another pedophile in government," and so you should oppose Webb.

This is absolutely psychotic.  It's already over-the-top to call these books "sleazy" because they treat distasteful human behavior as part of the story.  But to move from there to the claim that the author himself must be a pedophile is to go into drooling psycho territory.

We need that email.  We need to forward it to the Post, the Times, Olbermann, the lot.  It would be front-page news in the Times: Allen campaign accuses Webb of pedophilia. It would bring Allen's support into the 20's.

Someone must surely be on that email list?  Don't we have someone on board who once gave $5 to the Allen campaign just to get on the list?  Do we know a GOP'er who gave in good faith but (like Shaeffer) is now disgusted and willing to share it?

I agree (Silver Fox - 11/2/2006 3:03:53 PM)
Right after I read this diary this morning I filled out a message on Olbermann's MSNBC email response section and asked if his staff could get a copy of the email and I also sent a similar letter to Lou Dobbs.  We need to publish the full text of the email to let Virginians know EXACTLY what kind of Senator they DON'T want representing them!  Lowell, you have myriad contacts.  Surely one of them can get the full copy.  Has anyone contacted Mr. Shaeffer to request a copy of what he received?
