FOX News on Allen: This is one no-class campaign.

The Backlash Continues against Virginia's incredible shrinking Senator:

Virginia is plenty tough. Virginia is ugly. This is one no-class campaign.

Reaching into the buckets of old trash, literally, the Allen campaign found excerpts from fiction Webb had written as a novelist and released it as...as what?

As an effort to discredit Jim Webb as the kind of person who would write man-boy fiction, which must be worse than the kind of person who would use the GÇ£nGÇ¥ word in real life or be embarrassed to be Jewish or call an Indian-American GÇ£maccaca,GÇ¥ all incidents along the troubled path of this yearGÇÖs George Allen Senate campaign.

Note that the Allen campaign made no effort even to disguise who did this, or avoid the comparison.

It's now universally clear that the Allen campaign loses on issues and integrity.  George Allen must want to lose.

couple of points, misc. observations (PM - 10/29/2006 7:47:26 PM)
1.  Great diary at Kos, saying that this vote is also a referendum on what Virginians think of themselves.  http://www.dailykos....

2.  I get Google alerts for Allen and I'm getting all these "Allen spits on women" references in blogs.

3.  Chris "Hardball" Mathews mentioned the sealed divorce records.

4.  I'm curious, when Allen was a QB, how did he call audibles without Wadhams speaking for him?  Was UVA given a special rule exemption so it could have an extra person who just stood next to the QB and spoke for him?

Man, PM, your photos are something else (Catzmaw - 10/29/2006 7:54:34 PM)
Every one of the ones you've posted really grabs me.  Where do they come from?

Thanks. Just scouring the net. (PM - 10/29/2006 8:02:47 PM)
There are some sites that just have a lot of military pictures posted.  Some of these are official military pictures.  I just started out by doing a Google images search on Vietnam, and then following links serendipitously (sp?).

it may be on Fox, but it was written by a Dem (teacherken - 10/29/2006 7:51:25 PM)
you must remember that Susan Estrich was campaign manager for Mike Dukakis in 1988 (and what an effective campaign that is).  She has served as a Democratic face giving cover to Fox for quite some time.

It is not as if Fox News itself or one of their conservative talking heads was saying this.  That would be too great a hope.

Don't know if it's worth anything (Catzmaw - 10/29/2006 7:56:33 PM)
but I sent her an e-mail detailing my disgust at the whole thing.

One of the things I like about this site (PM - 10/29/2006 8:07:45 PM)
Is we call 'em as we see 'em.  Your point is well taken.

The "good" news, though . . .

If you go to the Michelle Malkin interview that was posted the other day, she was really disgusted with Allen.  And the announcer seemed to be too.  I am pretty sure it was on Fox.  And as I mentioned last night, her blog said she expected to be raked over the coals but instead she got mostly supportive comments.

My wife opined today that if Allen's intent was to drive the female vote away from Webb, his novel-gate idea would have the opposite effect.

That was on Faux News... (Loudoun County Dem - 10/29/2006 8:14:08 PM)
Malkin was talking with Charlie "War on Christmas" Gibson on the 5:00 PM EDT News:

Jim Webb - A Real Class Act (norman swingvoter - 10/29/2006 8:07:46 PM)
I guess that you are never too old for something new.  I attended a house party for Jim Webb this afternoon in Richmond, VA.  Jim Nachman and Governor Kaine were also there. I was able to speak to Jim for a few minutes after his speech.  I can now personally testify that this man is a real class act with a strong sense of honor. After the darkness and sleaziness that the republican party has sunk into, there is no doubt in my mind that America needs Jim Webb to help get this country back on track.

First Class vs. No Class (catbird - 10/29/2006 8:19:30 PM)
I held my nose and watched the segment Fox did on the Virginia Senate race.  The talking head described the race as one of the "dirtiest" and stated that BOTH candidates were "scraping the bottom of the barrel".

Pretty clever.  When you can't defend your guy's behavior, tell everybody that his opponent is just as dirty.

I'm wondering if the other MSM outlets are also accusing Webb of going "dirty".
Is Webb getting any credit for staying on message, diverging only when necessary to defend himself?

I've been proud of Webb's campaign style and think it is a great example of fine character.  One would think that the media would reward it with plenty of attention.

In other words, is Jim Webb getting any press for all his efforts to stick to the real issues facing this country?
In the world of politics, this is itself newsworthy.

(Webb supporters may be throwing arrest and divorce record questions but not Webb himself.)

I had this very conversation tonight with (Catzmaw - 10/29/2006 8:26:56 PM)
a colleague who commented that both candidates were scraping the bottom, etc.  I pointed out to him that Webb hasn't done any such thing and noted the many times Webb refused to address the macaca and n-word and Jewish heritage issues.  We should call out the MSM types who equivocate like this.  Don't let them get by with tarring both candidates with the same brush.  Only one of these candidates deserves any tarring.

Promoting Webb's campaign style (catbird - 10/29/2006 8:56:40 PM)
During the get-out-the-vote rally Webb himself reminded everyone that he refused to comment on the non-issue issues (macaca, n-word, ethnic heritage).  This piece of the video should be clipped and placed side by side with each of those times that Webb declined to go dirty (debates) and then be promoted all over the place.

I am really tired of people who are under the impression that BOTH sides have gone dirty.  Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. I'd love them to see and hear Webb's refusal to use smear even when opportunities are handed to him.  He would own the character issue hands down on this alone.

(I'm not clever enought to do the above suggestion.)

If webb loses its because (Jeff B - 10/29/2006 9:14:09 PM)
he did not connect personally with voters not because of Allens lame attacks. Lets all hope and pray this year Virginia is not looking for a polished politician.
