The Gentleman and the Smear Merchant

As we near the end of this historic and epochal campaign season, itGÇÖs a good time to look back on the single critical issue that will determine the outcome of this race:  integrity.

Jim Webb has the integrity to lead in the United States Senate and the authenticity to represent real Virginia values.

After watching George Allen over the course of this race, it is impossible to consider him a man of integrity.
When George Allen had is infamous GÇ£m-wordGÇ¥ meltdown, Jim Webb never commented on it directly.  Jim said that the event didnGÇÖt represent the greatness of the people of Southern Virginia, but he never made a single accusation.  Even WebbGÇÖs spokesmen only ever stated that the incident proved that George Allen is GÇ£not a nice guyGÇ¥.  I personally stated many times that it discredited George AllenGÇÖs claim to be a Southern Gentleman.

Then, George Allen spun himself out of control on the issue of his Jewish heritage; again, Webb never said a word.

Then, George Allen did his best to imitate Gary Hart and he claimed to have never used GÇ£the n-wordGÇ¥. Even as dozens of corroborating witnesses emerged to discredit George AllenGÇÖs claim, Jim Webb remained above the fray.

And how did George Allen pull his campaign out of a tailspin? First, he begged people to talk about GÇ£issuesGÇ¥ instead of his obviously failed character, and then he made it a point never to be quoted in public again.  Virginia is filled with decent people who were willing to give Mr. Allen the benefit of the doubt, and so they looked past all of the gaffes and looked to him for a better way.  He didnGÇÖt deliver.

If George Allen were a gentleman, he would have followed up his plaintive request for an issues debate with an actual issues debate.  Instead, he unleashed an unprecedented campaign of outright lies on issues from taxation, to civil rights, to women.  Because of the way that campaign finance laws are written there is no legal way for one campaign to compel another campaign to pull an ad. The lies were smeared across the airwaves.  They continue today.

The astounding fact about George AllenGÇÖs ad campaign this season, is that it is an astounding compilation of outright lies, neatly packaged, and projected into the homes of millions of Virginians with millions of dollars.

Even after doing his damdest, even after outspending Jim Webb 5-to-1, George Allen still has a tied race on his hands.  Only a man of true integrity could withstand such a dazzling torrent of smears and lies.  Jim Webb is that man of integrity.

In the last two weeks of this campaign, Virginians will discover a real Southern Gentleman in Jim Webb, a man of integrity.  Webb has been and will remain positive throughout this campaign.  In the last weeks of this campaign, after his multi-million dollar smear campaign, is it possible for honest Virginians to ever see George Allen as anything but a phony.  Bereft of integrity, George Allen is no gentleman.  This campaign has merely earned him the title GÇ£smear merchantGÇ¥.

George Allen's campaign is just plain shameful.  He will do anything to hold on to power.
