Allen Slides in New SurveyUSA Poll

According to a new SurveyUSA poll, George Allen's net approval rating has fallen to just Plus 1, down from Plus 8 in September and Plus 13 in August. According to News7, "Among the nation's 100 U.S. Senators, Allen fell from 74th in September to 84th in October."

How does this mesh with the Mason-Dixon poll released yesterday? I'm confused.

Don't be too confused (Josh - 10/24/2006 12:25:05 PM)
The Allen camp has got to be completely freaked out by these numbers.  Not just SUSA, but M/D too and especially the VP.

1.  VP was registered, not likely voters.  In this climate that heavily skews the numbers towards Allen.

2.  VP had Webb only up by 10 in NoVa which is a laugh.

3.  VP had Webb up in Hampton Roads.  Fantastic news for the Webb campaign.

4.  VP shows 17% undecides in the African American community.  Guess which way those will break.

5.  Even after the ugliest most relentless smear campaign in virginia history, Allen's attempt to cut Webb's women vote has failed.  Women remain essentially split and they have only seen negative ads from Allen and defensive ads from Webb.  If the Webb camp goes positive for women, count on massive support moving towards Jim Webb.

You know what I find most interesting about the MD? (phriendlyjaime - 10/24/2006 12:31:22 PM)
I checked out the breakdown with all questions asked and everything on msnbc, and the only thing they do NOT include is whether the person called was a Dem or a Rep.  Considering the way the issues answers re: Bush and the economy differ so greatly from the national trendline, I cannot help but feel that Reps were called more than Dems.

Phriendlyjaime's got a good point (Catzmaw - 10/24/2006 5:43:21 PM)
especially considering what I was thinking last night about all the registered voters who no longer have land lines.  Younger voters are less likely to have land lines and many are more likely to be Dems.  There are so many cell phones in my house that we misplaced the cordless landline phone weeks ago and haven't bothered to find it.  There are three voters in my house, all going Dem this election, but no one's going to be able to ask us about those votes.  I wonder how many numbers they had to call before they found someone to talk to.

It is a mixed bag to be sure. (thegools - 10/24/2006 12:55:19 PM)
I can find hope in this poll and unease in the other (M-D).  I really hope Webb starts to saturate the airwaves with some positive messages in the next few weeks....perhaps throw in some biographical info too.  A lot of people aren't yet paying attention to the race except through the commercials.  They don't yet know Webb except what Allen says and what Webb says in his defense.

Don't let Allen define you Mr. Webb!

(What's really sad is that there are people who actually expect to be educated by campaign commercials?!...  and yet they complain about political spin.  Is there anything less fair and more spin filled than campaign commmercials?  How lazy are these people?)

IT'S ACTUALLY 47-47% (PM - 10/24/2006 1:03:56 PM)
The difference is in the rounding.

Wow, that's a nasty looking graph... (Lowell - 10/24/2006 1:11:12 PM)
...if you're an Allen fan.

By the way, after all that's happened the past few months (not to mention the past 6 years), why ARE there any Allen fans?

His female approvals are going south (PM - 10/24/2006 1:10:54 PM)
Interesting -- Allen's slamming Webb on women's issues and whereas in July he was +9 with females, and +17 in June he's now -5.

Did anyone notice that when you click on the tracking points you can get the trend lines according to all the subcategories?

This one lists the female approval ratings.

Jim's Family (jackiehva - 10/24/2006 1:58:35 PM)
Friends recently asked me if Jim Webb is married, has children.  We see Allen's ads with Susan and three beautiful children--in a park-like setting (their back yard?).  We even see the attractive Susan telling us how hubby is a wonderful husband and father.  Evidently, the guy is more effective/productive in the home than in the VA Senate!!
But what do we know about Jim's family?  And is this important?  What he will do if elected is what I want to know. However, many of us still know very little about Jim Webb and THAT could cost him votes on 11/7.

Are you serious? (Lowell - 10/24/2006 2:07:15 PM)
If so, it's amazing, given all the publicity about Jim's son going to Iraq, Jim's wife Hong's "live blogging," and appearances by his family members at many public events.  Are TV ads the only thing that matters?  Even on that front, the new Mark Warner ad for Jim has lots of photos of Jim with his family.

Ha! (phriendlyjaime - 10/24/2006 4:46:46 PM)
I want a comment rating added called "are you serious?!?"

Webb does not appear with his wife in the general press & on commercials (thegools - 10/24/2006 5:06:55 PM)
like George Allen.  Images are way more powerful than words.  I agree if he wants people to know he is married, he should be with her more when pictures are clicking or when the commercials are being made.

Ok, gotta ask you. (phriendlyjaime - 10/24/2006 2:08:30 PM)
Are you Jane Oldham from NLS?

Just asking.

I am so tired of this "But George has attractive Susan, is Jim even married?" tripe.  The man, Jim Webb not Allen, is married, it's pretty obvious to me and anyone who goes to events or to his website, and frankly, I am sick and tired of people acting like someone's family is going to run the Senate.  Hong is a successful WORKING mother, and she is also pregnant.  Who cares what Susan does?  Who cares that she's "attractive"?  Does that help public policy?  Would you want Laura and the twins any where near anything important?  George Bush screws things up enough, can you imagine?

I'm not trying to attack you, I just think that if people are going to vote based on wives facial features and kids playing in a backyard, then maybe they should stay home along with the idiotic "I love the Skins, so I love ALLEN!" people; they obviously don't care about issues.

But... I love the 'skins and LOATHE Allen... (Loudoun County Dem - 10/24/2006 2:13:33 PM)
...oh, and I definitely care about the issues... ;-)

No, I'm not Jane Oldham (jackiehva - 10/28/2006 4:10:16 PM)
I'm a retired grandmother and a FORMER Republican!!! In my original post I said a friend had asked about Jim's family.  I know Jim is married and his wife and family are beautiful.  And, no, we are not voting for the families we are voting for the most honorable, intelligent, and truthful candidate who can do a better job than George Allen.  But the ads are sinking lower and lower into the muck and it would be really refreshing to see an upbeat ad that included Jim's lovely wife and children.  That's all.  I can't imagine what all the TV advertising is costing....

....on market research firms.. (davebain - 10/24/2006 3:17:36 PM)
I ran a market research group for 5 years. Surveys like this automatically underrepresent working people who do not participate or are not reached because they are quite busy, well, working. Still, the M-D dynamic is troubling.

and cell phone users? (PM - 10/24/2006 10:50:21 PM)
I know a fair amount of people who have ditched their land phone
