Bring Back Paper Ballots?

I'm only half serious about the paper ballots, but this is utterly ridiculous, unacceptable, and totally inexcusable. Anyway, I urge you to vote for "James H. 'Jim'" on November 7, whose "long name" has been truncated on certain electronic voting machines to dispense with that minor, unimportant detail known has HIS LAST NAME!  Uh, guys?  How about just "Jim Webb," or is THAT too long for these stupid-ass machines?  If all else fails, I suppose we could go to how they do it in India, with paper ballots containing symbols of the candidates.  Maybe a Navy Cross medal for Jim Webb and a Macaque monkey for George Allen?  Just a thought...

The truncated name is on the summary page only.  So make sure you see James H. "Jim" on the summary page.  This kind of thing is happening in the U.S.?  With machines from Austin, TX?  Hmmmm....

And it's quite curious (Eric - 10/24/2006 8:05:12 AM)
how this problem appears in stronger Democratic areas such as Falls Church, Alexandria, and C-ville.  Conspiracy?  Probably not - but it is odd.

My thoughts exactly (thegools - 10/24/2006 10:44:21 AM)

Diebold machines are owned by GOP interest.... (bladerunner - 10/24/2006 8:17:34 AM)
IF anyone thinks this is an accident you don't know how bad the GOP wants to hold on to power. It may seem little but the GOP does a bunch of little things and it all ads up. I am telling you now this country is under seige by the GOP, and they will stop at nothing. Why in the hell do you think Bush is so confident. I hope I am wrong--but I am seeing corruption. Where's Jack Bauer?

this sucks (Jon-Phillip - 10/24/2006 9:03:27 AM)
This certainly going to upset a lot of people.  I am not a conspiracy theorist but this is awful suspicious.

But regardless, get this fucking campaign off its ass and start attacking Allen 24/7 on his Iraq flip flop.  He is trying to re-calibrate his message.  Do not let him

Stop the stupid stock option adds and roll the flip flop adds

Work to Win: Before AND after elections (hereinva - 10/24/2006 9:38:16 AM)
So this "glitch" has been captured prior to the election  and cannot be repaired.  Well at least its one with forewarning and ground crews can work with it-- via special NOTICES at the polls and pre-emptive leafleting. (so much for "paperless" !)

I am a big fan of technology but NO FAN of electronic - paperless voting machines (in current non verifiable form)

The "glitch" is ONE MORE REASON to demand paper ballots AND verifiable voting in Virginia. After the election, I urge everyone who has an interest in verifiable voting/paper ballots to get involved. The Virginia Joint Committee On Technology is studying the whole issue of electronic ballots and needs to hear from the public. Here is their web site:

We need paper ballots (Hugo Estrada - 10/24/2006 10:31:11 AM)
You can recount paper ballots. You cannot recount electronic files, especially when it is so easy to change their contents.

If we really want the speed of technology, we can vote on a computer, which will write on a piece of paper our selection and fill in a box. Those paper ballots then can be run through a low tech, electronic scanner grading machine. If there are irregularities, we can always just count the votes by hand reading our printed selections.

But we absolutely need a paper trial.

trusting election results (drmontoya - 10/24/2006 10:43:44 AM)
I have tried not to be skeptical about election results, but.. reading about this today is making me nervous.

It is time for Jean Jensen to go! (Bubby - 10/24/2006 11:06:56 AM)
Jean Jensen, secretary of the Virginia State Board of Elections should resign.  Her offense?  Ms. Jensen consistently puts the convenience of the SBE above the sanctity of the vote.  Resign, Jean Jensen - you have had four years to secure the vote and you have failed.

This episode is an example (Bubby - 10/24/2006 11:31:21 AM)
The State Board of Elections is entirely dependent upon outside vendors.  The SBE is nothing more than a tool of the voting machine companies, and whomever controls those companies. Diebold says it is too hard to put a paper trail on the ballot - SBE parrots the same.  The Hart voting machine can't display names properly - the SBE says sorry, we don't know how to fix it. Maybe next year.  If we had a secure vote, under the control of the SBE this problem would have been fixed last month.  Jean Jensen is a worthless tool.

Like the infamous butterfly ballot (Teddy - 10/24/2006 11:50:53 AM)
Remember how the Miami, Florida Jewish population in 2000 voted for an anti-Semite because of confusion on the so-called butterfly ballot? Jean Jensen sound like a clone of that registrar. Please see my article on How to Steal an Election here on Raising Kaine. It is not the big, obvious things like men in sheets or brown shirts beating up voters. It is the death of a thousand cuts: losing voter registrations, purging voter lists, trashing provisional ballots, picky administrative requirements on registrations, picky voter ID requirements, screwing up the ballot, etc. It is deliberate--- even if some of the perpetrators are ignorant fools, they are being used. Bring back paper ballots!

THe United States of America can't run a free, fair and accurate election in the 21st century. Shame shame shame.

I certainly hope (mr science - 10/24/2006 12:24:39 PM)
the polling places that have this "glitch" will have signs conspicuously posted all over letting people know about it. This is re-effing-diculous.

Only Half Serious? (Splash - 10/24/2006 12:38:04 PM)
This is a wake up call. Republicans will certainly try to steal this election for Allen. Anyone who doubts this is willfully ignorant.

Hand recounts of paper ballots is the only stop-gap measure for gaining public confidence in the outcome of a very close election. No paper ballot = no democracy. Meantime, a huge turnout takes on a new importance, bc a huge turnout makes an election harder for the other side to steal, and easier to expose the effort to steal it if they try (which they will).

Meantime, document these elections!!! BIGTIME. Cameras, video,  paper and pens, write down events soon after they occur, etc etc. - and make very public the intention of doing so, starting right now.

The Fix is In! (TurnVirginiaBlue - 10/24/2006 1:44:13 PM)
I'm sorry but at this point and I think VA Dems should have realized this was going to happen, here come the voting games.

I mean how many elections do we need with inaccurate voting machines, lies about displaying a candidates name

(this is utter bullshit, if it's on a screen it can be changed very easily before the election!  way easier than going to the printer!)

VA Dems should file a lawsuit right now to be frank and start looking for all of the other games right now.

For example, having not enough voting booths in NoVA, changing of the count, you name it.

Sue + technical (TurnVirginiaBlue - 10/24/2006 1:51:33 PM)
I think VA Dems should sue right now and I think some technical people should be involved.

This should be simply changing one data entry value in the software and could be easily corrected before the election.

I don't buy it, even if it's burned into a ROM, which I doubt, replace them.  At worst it's burned into an EEPROM which can be changed also.

I find this absolutely outrageous and the 1st sign of what is to come.

According to the State Board of Elections... (snolan - 10/24/2006 3:12:07 PM)
According to the SBE for locality Alexandria City, the choices for Senate will be:

R George F. Allen (incumbent)
D James H. "Jim" Webb, Jr.
IG Glenda Gail Parker

According to my count of the characters if they cannot print/display Webb, they cannot print/display "rker" or "(incumbent)" either - which works to Allen's advantage entirely.

What happens if someone named Slobuszewski or Wojohowicz ever decides to run for office?

I'm sorry, but someone needs to be help accountable for this.
And electronic systems are TRIVIALLY easy to fix this sort of error on.  There is NO EXCUSE.

Sorry for the shouting, but this positively enrages me.
