Dear Mitch,

Help us keep the momentum in this race -- contribute today!

Momentum.

We've got it! Today, the Washington Post endorsed Jim Webb's campaign for U.S. Senate. I could write a million words about why Jim is the obvious choice for Virginians, but I think I'll let the Washington Post do the heavy lifting today. From their endorsement:

[Jim Webb] was prescient in warning, back in 2002, that the war in Iraq risked stranding the United States in a long-term occupation without an exit strategy. An intelligent man with a record of integrity, he has resisted the packaging of political consultants, which can only be a good thing. Those assets, as well as his deep familiarity with military and national security affairs, offer the promise that he would make an able, if unorthodox, U.S. senator. And the fact that his youngest son is deployed as a marine in Iraq gives him a perspective that is rare in today's Congress.

The Washington Post writes about George Allen:

Quite simply, he is a mediocre senator whose six years of undistinguished service do not justify rehiring.

...Mr. Allen lacks any comparable independent-mindedness. He has spent his time in the Senate in lock step with the Bush administration, embracing tax cuts that have imperiled the nation's fiscal health; subsidies for oil and gas companies that hardly needed the help; prisoner detention policies that have undercut America's image abroad; and restrictions on embryonic stem cell research despite its medical potential.

...Virginians deserve better and more enlightened representation. Mr. Webb offers that hope.

This endorsement is huge news for our campaign and builds upon the momentum we gained this week with the release of our latest ad "Steer." This ad has had a devastating effect on George Allen's campaign simply by telling the truth about Senator Allen's questionable receipt of stock options, which were at one time worth $1.1 million. I can't tell you how effective this ad has been. Please take a moment to watch the ad , and then please ensure we have the resources to air it across Virginia.

Contribute to our Fight Back Fund today!

We're just 20 days away from election day. We have the momentum in this race, but we're not going to let up. We're going to get Jim Webb's message out to the voters. And on November 7, we're going to elect Jim Webb.

Sincerely,

Jessica Vanden Berg
Campaign Manager
Webb for Senate

P.S. Please help us spread the news about our campaign. Forward this message to everyone you know today!

Calling Talk Radio Shows

There are lots of ways to get the word out about Jim Webb and what a great senator heGÇÖll make. HereGÇÖs one more you might consider: calling talk radio shows. The show could be one carried by just a single local station, or it could be a show broadcast nationwide that is doing a segment on Senate races around the country.

Here are some tips to help make your calls as effective and persuasive as possible. (Most of these points assume youGÇÖre calling a talk show that really explores an issue. If youGÇÖre courageous enough to call some of the far-right shows, see the last point for some suggestions.)

1) Have a clear objective for your call. At this stage in the campaign, for example, it might be to answer some of the misleading ads the Allen campaign has been running; to encourage other Democrats to get to the polls on Tuesday, November 7; or to help persuade the small number of undecided voters.

2) ItGÇÖs easiest to start with a show that you already listen to. YouGÇÖll be familiar with the programGÇÖs format, the host, and the types of calls they carry.

3) To locate other talk shows, check your local newspaper for a listing of radio stations in your area. You can also do a search on Google (search for GÇ£talk radioGÇ¥ plus GÇ£VirginiaGÇ¥ or the name of your city). You can also do an Advanced Search on Radio-locator.com (http://www.radio-loc...), searching for Virginia stations and choosing GÇ£talk,GÇ¥ GÇ£news,GÇ¥ or GÇ£news/talkGÇ¥ as the format. For more information on specific programs, take a look at the stationGÇÖs Web site.

4) Listen to the program for a couple of times before you call.

5) During the showGÇÖs broadcast, call in as early as possible. That increases the chances that youGÇÖll get on the air.

6) Before you call, think about your main message. ItGÇÖll help to jot down a few points on a piece of paper. And remember that your main goal is to influence the programGÇÖs listeners, not the programGÇÖs host or a guest being interviewed in the studio.

7) When your call gets through, youGÇÖll likely have to talk with a screener and give your name, city, and a summary of what you want to say. Try to keep your summary to just one sentence. And practice it aloud a couple of times before you call. That way, youGÇÖll sound more relaxed and confident, which will increase your chances of being chosen by the screener.

8) You may have to wait up to 30 minutes to get on the air. Some programs will take questions by email, which can be convenient if your time is limited or if youGÇÖre nervous about being on the air.

8) When youGÇÖre on the air, try to make your main point clearly, concisely, and in an upbeat manner. If possible, substantiate your opinion with references to recent events in the news, or a book or a Web site that provides supports for your view.

9) If appropriate, support your main message with personal experience. For example, if youGÇÖre calling a program focusing on education issues, tell how many children you have in the public school system. If the subject is national security, point it out if you are a veteran or have a relative serving in the military. Or, talk about why you decided to volunteer for the Jim Webb campaign, and describe some of the things that Virginia voters have said to you when youGÇÖve been canvassing or make phone-banking calls.

10) Try to incorporate your values and basic principles into what you say. For some examples of how to do that, see the GÇ£IssuesGÇ¥ area of the Webb for Senate Internet site (http://www.webbforse...).

11) If you get flustered or if the host or the program guest challenges you or tries to change the topic, go back to your main message: GÇ£ThatGÇÖs an interesting subject, but what IGÇÖm talking about is . . . .GÇ¥

14) Calling conservative talk radio shows is hard, but it can be worthwhile. Many of the audience members will be GÇ£dittoheads,GÇ¥ who blindly echo the hostGÇÖs opinions. However, there will likely be some more moderate persons who listen to the show because it is entertaining or itGÇÖs the only talk radio station in a particular local area. Good advice on telephoning conservative talks show is available from: a) GÇ£Call-In to Talk RadioGÇ¥ (http://securingameri...) and b) GÇ£Calling TipsGÇ¥ (http://www.callingal...); also check on the main pages of that GÇ£Calling All WingnutsGÇ¥ Web site for audio recordings of tele phone calls to far-right radio shows.

"...Here's what we may fairly conclude from Allen's macaca meltdown: He was a rude cad.
