Campaigning Observations - Friday the 13th

This is an open thread about the little things we've all noticed regarding the campaigns this week.  While none of this rates a toupe alert, sometimes the little things are very revealing...

The sign war
I've been seeing a handful of Webb/Hurst signs in a median near the Vienna metro for a while now.  Earlier in the week the Davis signsters came out and planted their signs immediately in front and behind the Democrats.  Techincally legal, but certainly not honest and fair.  The next day someone had moved the Democratic signs out of the GOP sandwich.  Then today they're sandwiched again.
This could turn into quite a sign battle.  It'll be fun for a while, but I predict the Republicans will eventually become frustrated and just steal the Democratic signage.  Why do I think that?  Easy - Steal a few Democratic signs and they're gone.  But the opposite won't happen because it's pointless - steal 100 Republican signs and 200 will appear tomorrow.  Sad but true.

The mail war
I received two mailers from Allen this week.  Both about issues.  Ha. HaHaHaHaHa.  Just kidding.  They were in regard to an article Webb wrote almost 30 years ago about a very controversial subject during a time of great change in our military.  But that didn't stop Allen from stooping to new lows by saying, based on that article, Jim Webb wouldn't "... allow [girls] to attend the college of their choice" and imply that Webb would not "...provide our children with every opportunity".  Wow.  That is one outlandish stretch.  So much for issues.  And honesty.

Davis, who I expected to behave a little better than our junior senator, must be feeling the heat because he too threw integrity out the window with his mailer.  Davis uses one word quotes in some cases to describe Hurst's position on immigration.  One word?  Talk about out of context.  Gee, I wonder if I could write something misleading about Davis by using a single word he spoke?  Then they throw in some words like "left wing liberal", "very weak", "very dangerous", "Extreme on the issues".

Note to the morons who thought this one up: Aside from taking a page (no comments from the peanut gallery) from Allen's book of deceit and dirty tricks, this just isn't going to work too well in NOVA.  Those "right wing extremism" buzzwords don't matter to the moderate/moderate-left leaning NOVA region.  That said, I still think Davis has a big advantage, but he isn't going to make any friends in NOVA with spewage like this.

My sign was stolen (Kryndis - 10/13/2006 8:55:47 PM)
I've been reading for a while, though this is my first post.  Hi!

Just wanted to speak up and say that someone stole my Hurst sign right out of my yard the other night.  I had heard about this silliness with Webb signs but this is the first I've heard of it happening to Hurst.

Maybe Republicans keep pursuing underage pages because they're so used to acting like children themselves.

Welcome to RK, and thanks for your post. (Lowell - 10/13/2006 9:19:21 PM)
I think you may be onto something about the childish behavior by Republicans.

That's Horrible (pitin - 10/14/2006 1:19:38 AM)
Contact us here at Hurst HQ 703-455-1014 and I'll be sure to get you a new sign ASAP!

Also, just so you know, your sign is personal property, and if you choose to report it stolen, the police have to take a statement and file a report.

Will do (Kryndis - 10/14/2006 2:05:51 AM)
I'll give a call tomorrow and see about getting it replaced, thanks.

As for the police, I considered it, but with no evidence at all and no clue who it might be I'm not going to waste their time and mine by calling them in.  That said, afer the sign's replaced I plan to setup a laptop and a webcam in the window to catch anyone who tries to do it again.  I don't take kindly to my free speech being silenced.

How about the money war? (Lowell - 10/13/2006 9:48:50 PM)
See here for some great news...if you're a Webb fan, that is! :)
