Republicans: Making the "Unacceptable" Acceptable

How many times have we heard the Bush Administration and its rubberstamp Congresscritters talk about how this or that is "unacceptable."  For instance, we must have heard a zillion times by now that it was "unacceptable" for this or that member of Bush's "Axis of Evil" - Iraq, Iran, and North Korea - to get weapons of mass destruction.  Here's President Bush from his infamous "Axis of Evil" speech:

I will not wait on events, while dangers gather.  I will not stand by, as peril draws closer and closer.  The United States of America will not permit the world's most dangerous regimes to threaten us with the world's most destructive weapons.

Well, guess what?  Bush just permitted one of the world's most dangerous regimes - North Korea - to threaten us with the world's most destructive weapon, a NUCULAR weapon, as Bush calls it. And what is Bush doing about this situation?  Well, let's see, he's saying how "unacceptable" it is.  And, and, and....uhhhhhh.  Oh well, guess it's just as "unacceptable" as all the other "unacceptable" things that have happened in Bush's presidency, like Iran kicking out U.N. nuclear inspectors, or Mark Foley preying on underage boys while Republican leaders in Congress did nothing, or New Orleans still a disaster area over 1 year after Hurricane Katrina, or the budget deficit out of control, etc.

Weren't all of these things "unacceptable" - pick your synonym for that word - at some point or the other over the past 6 years?  Oh well, what else would you expect from Bush, Allen et al. but promises promises.

Im all for saying bush is a moron (JohnM - 10/12/2006 7:00:29 AM)
BUT i would much rather him go around screaming its "unacceptable" than trying to launch a third damn war. I think the irony is really that he attacked the one nation that didnt have nuclear capabiltiy.

I'm just pointing out the Republicans' hypocricy... (Lowell - 10/12/2006 7:02:46 AM)
...and false macho bluster.  When it comes down to it, they "speak loudly and carry a VERY small stick!"

Sad truth about Iran and North Korea and the United States (snolan - 10/12/2006 8:50:46 AM)
At this moment in time we cannot afford to have the current (nominal) leaders of these three countries talk to each other without adult supervision.

All three nomimal leaders are cheap tricksters with a strong tendency to make sophomoric and idiotic statements while the microphones are on.  All three are belligerent bullies, used to pushing people around.  All three over-simplify the problems they are asked to confront.

For 50 years the United States should have been talking directly to both of these rogue nations (NKorea and Iran) - not to legitimize their governments, but to at least have a positive impact for negotiations.  Now, I am not so sure - perhaps we should wait until we all three have more literate leadership.

Nuclear proliferation is no laughing matter, and Bush's irresponsible treatment of North Korea, as evil as their leadership really is, has allowed this to happen.  To be fair, US Policy over the past several administrations has encouraged non-nuclear states to become nuclear states - it is perceived as increasing their bargaining power; but Bush could have stopped this one by focusing on the really dangerous state (North Korea) and leaving Iraq as it was, or continuing the fine tradition started by his father to gently pressuring Saddam to change.

Grrr!

We have surrendered the initiative here to China.

For China this is a golden opportunity to step in and correct the problem (N. Korea) and earn huge influence in the world at U.S. expense...  My guess is they'll pass.  China is far more patient than Westerners usually understand.

The sad truth is that North Korea will become a nuclear threat, and begin trading nuclear technologies to terrorists for food and cash; this is worse than we Saddam with nukes.  It's worse than Iran with Nukes.

I am not so worried about South Korea or Japan, an attack by North Korea on either would result in end-of-regime in North Korea.  They will not risk it.  They'll trade this stuff away for supplies, and then we have nukes in the wrong hands.

Thanks Mr. Bush - you just armed the terrorists you created by stomping into the quagmire that is Iraq.

We need a treason trial, please.

U.S. Detentions Draw British Criticism

LONDON -- The detention of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay is unacceptable and counterproductive, Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said Thursday, underlining an increasingly critical British line on the U.S.-run prison.

Beckett, releasing Britain's annual report on human rights around the world, said that detention without trial of hundreds of suspects was "unacceptable in terms of human rights" and "ineffective in terms of counterterrorism."

Our biggest problem is that dubya THINKS he's Michael Corleone when he actually is Fredo...
