VA-05: Virgil Goode: Hastert is Fine With Me

In a stunning statement that appeared in a sidebar to a related story in the Danville Register-Bee, Virgil Goode (R-MZM) claims that it was right that Clinton was impeached, but since Mark Foley is already gone, and since he sees no felony having occured, Hastert should continue.

Rep. Virgil Goode, R-5th, said based on what he knows now, he does not think Hastert should step down.

"He [Hastert] said in his statement he was glad Foley resigned and if he hadn't resigned then he would have asked him to."

"He [Clinton] lied under oath and should have been impeached," Goode said. "I don't have any evidence that anyone committed a felony. Foley may have. I'm not sure of the law in Florida, but he's already gone."

(Register-Bee sidebar, not online)

If this isn't a clear enough sign that we can't afford Republicans like Virgil Goode anymore, I don;t know what is. He is a part of the do-nothing Congress, that has obstructed any real reform and tried to execute the war 'on the cheap'.

When was the last time you heard Virgil Goode talk about what a burden it is for the families in his district that are suffering from having a loved one overseas? When was the last time you heard Virgil talk about anything other than the 'party line' with concern to Iraq?

I know one thing he has done. He voted to cut in half the funding for research into the #1 injury in Iraq: TBI (Trauamatic Brain Injury). When veterans asked Mr. Goode to please cooperate in this life-saving and life-changing research, he responded by voting 'aye' on the cut in funding, down to $7 million (from $19 million).

Right here, to your left, is what Virgil Goode has been doing in Congress. Sucking up to defense contractors that by far gave him the most cash of anyone in his campaign two years ago, and are still listed this year as having contributed over $57,000. Goode gave the money away, but the stench still survives. Ask people in the 5th District if they can name one thing Virgil has done in the last ten years since he has been in office. MZM? Please.

End Virgil Goode's career politician behavior by electing Al Weed.

This Guy Is Either (Mark - 10/6/2006 4:48:31 AM)
dangerously naive, or dangerously and astonishingly stupid.

First he didn't know any donations were illegal, now he thinks nothing of one of the biggest cover-ups in Congressional history.

Go-along-get-along Virgil. NOT the way to progress...

Here is a real leader (Gordie - 10/6/2006 6:49:46 AM)
Al Weed’s Leadership
Mountain Cove Winery was founded in 1973. At that time the state of Virginia had no really good laws to promote wineries. Al drawing on his vast experience in banking, military, business, farming, community leadership, conservation and education stepped forward to organize and promote legislation to the Virginia General Assembly. The group he formed got laws passed in the legislature that enhanced the Virginia wine industry. Maryland has the same climate and soil as Virginia, but they did not have the leadership of Al Weed, therefore their wine industry did not flourish as Virginia’s.
From Mountain Cove Winery in 1973, there were 100 plus wineries in 2005 and 262 vineyards in 2004. In 2004 there were 3,700 tons of grapes harvested for a crop value of 4.8 million dollars. There were 231,000 cases of wine sold amounting to retail sales of about 45 million dollars. The sales tax on that 45 million dollars amounted to about 2 and one quarter million dollars. The wine tax at 40 cents a liter amounts to about $2,275,200.
More then 500,000 people visit the wineries in Virginia each year. A large amount of those visitors stay at B&B lodging which is calculated as $500 a day visitors.
Nelson County has 7 wineries and 14 vineyards. The revenue to Nelson County’s tax base is far greater then any appropriations our congressman ever appropriated.
Vote for Al Weed, a leader who can produce revenue and jobs.

Great find. (JohninCville - 10/6/2006 11:22:55 PM)
Thanks for posting this.

Is any part of the article online?  I know the sidebar isn't, but it could be good to see the rest if it is.  I searched the Register-Bee but couldn't find it.  (Archiving tends to be lousy for these small papers.)

If not, could you post the date?  Maybe I can find the thing in the library.

I sent this link to the folks at talkingpointsmemo.com, who have so far found only one GOP'er in the house who's said on the record that he'll support Hastert.

By the way, (JohninCville - 10/7/2006 1:15:55 AM)
I've posted a link to this over at DailyKos, as well.

Thanks John (Mark - 10/7/2006 3:08:57 PM)
I think I saw it over there. (Dems2004)
