Allen: Unintended Hilarity

Tomorrow night, George Allen has apparently decided to talk about his non-record of non-accomplishment the past 6 years for about 2 minutes on TV.  Yeah, I know, it's about as exciting as that "wounded sea slug" of a Senate Allen wants to be voted back into for a year or two (as he runs for President).

Anyway, I was looking at the Republican Party of Virginia's press release on this event, and it struck me as unintentionally hilarious that Allen will be appearing between "Access Hollywood" and "Deal or No Deal."  "Access Hollywood?"  Wait a minute, doesn't Allen hate all those "Hollywood movie moguls," even though he grew up near Hollywood and now receives huge sums of money from the entertainment industry?  Doesn't Allen accuse Jim Webb, who was regularly visiting his relatives in SWVA when Allen was still living in Southern California, of being tied in with Hollywood somehow?  Very funny.
Regarding the "Deal or No Deal" show, I'd say that it's "no deal" for George Allen, unless of course he's dealing with Jack Abramoff or one of his other corrupt friends in the Republican-controlled, Hastert/DeLay/Foley Congress.  "No deal" in this election, though, which is why he's going for a Hail Mary pass tomorrow night and blowing a large wad of his money.

Another unintentionally hilarious juxtaposition is that, in Richmond, Allen will be appearing between "Jeopardy" and "Wife Swap."  Yeah, Allen's in "Jeopardy" alright - in this election!  And he's in "Jeopardy" specifically because of his pathetic record, which he plans to tout tomorrow night, combined with his miserable/nasty campaign, and also his American Hero opponent - Jim Webb.  As far as "Wife Swap" is concerned, does it seem a bit ironic to you that the supposed "family values" candidate would be appearing right before a show with that name?

Anyway, I'm sure George Allen will (not) have something profound and meaningful to say tomorrow night, perhaps about how he's terribly sorry for the deer head in the mailbox, or how he doesn't really wish he had been born in Iowa and how he isn't really bored out of his mind in the Senate.  Or something.  Ooooh, oooh, I can't wait!  How about you?

An act of desperation (Glant - 10/1/2006 9:51:22 PM)
This is an unprecidented act of desperation.  Allen's people are trying to plug a leaking ship, but you can't plug a leak with dental floss.

It must be nice to have so much money you can make these huge air time buys.  It will be interesting to see the Sept 30 fundraising reports.  Has the controversy affected Allen's ability to raise money?

It has a good video from The Daily Show

To spend all that money tomorrow and see his poll numbers dip (JennyE - 10/1/2006 10:01:20 PM)
I'm sure they would be having heart attacks at Allen HQ when this happens.

Late Night Humor (PM - 10/1/2006 10:11:42 PM)
They're making fun of Allen on the late night shows:

"Virginia Republican Senator George Allen is in trouble for repeatedly making racially insensitive remarks, insulting people for their background and displaying Confederate memorabilia in his office. I don't get it. Today he blamed the whole thing on the Jewish-controlled media." --Jay Leno  9-27

People are still talking about George Allen. Did you know his dad was a football coach? He coached the Rams and the Redskins. Right now he’s coaching the white team on "Survivor”.

As Larry Sabato said, when they're laughing at you you're in trouble

Bottom line: Senate race is making Virginia look like a laughingstock, in U.S. and abroad.  Only one jibe at Webb; all the others are at Allen, including the late night jokes.

They do have to take shots at Webb to maintain the facade.. (Loudoun County Dem - 10/1/2006 11:24:30 PM)
...of fairness but Webb has allowed few openings. For example, Weekend Update on SNL last night spent 5 minutes riffing on Allen and then did a scrabble joke about Webb, Allen took all of the damage.

He's still obsessed with Hollywood? (libra - 10/1/2006 11:23:26 PM)
From Lowell:

it struck me as unintentionally hilarious that Allen will be appearing between "Access Hollywood" and "Deal or No Deal."

And here I thought that Allen got over his envy of Webb's combat boots by appearing in "Gods and Generals"... But, apparently, "no deal". I wonder which film will have "a Senatorial cameo appearance" next...

The REAL reason for the timing of tomorrow's speech (Glant - 10/2/2006 2:36:28 AM)
As we all know, (sarcasm font activated) George just found out that his mother was born a Jew.  Well Monday is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement!

Or maybe he figures all the Jewish voters will be away and he won't have to worry about offending us.

Yom Kippur (libra - 10/2/2006 2:50:55 AM)
On Yom Kippur, it's *you* who's supposed to go hungry all day (funny... it's a bit like Ramadan, innit? Sigh... all those family squabbles), not the press. Hopefully, Allen will throw his usual morsel to the press :)
