Sportsmen for Webb at the Harrisonburg gun show

Best excuse I ever had for going to a gun show. I hadn't been to one in like 15 years, but I decided that this time, there's no time like the present.
Narrative below the fold.
I went to the gun show at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds for 2 reasons: to make myself sick looking at all the stuff i wanted that I couldn't afford, and because I'd gotten an email from Sportsmen for Webb advising they'd be there. My job kind of puts limits on what I can do politically, but believe me, I push it to the limit at all times.
Anyway........

I had already introduced myself to Jim Kirkman of Sportsmen for Webb

when I decided to go out and have a butt.
There was a pickup out there with a sticker that featured a rebel flag and said, "Teach A Yankee To Drive, Point His Car North."
I saw that and I started laughing like hell. I came down here from Vermont about sixteen months ago.
A vendor out there doing the same thing I was - having a smoke - saw me laughing and grinnned.
"Some of these guys out here take that shit real  serious.." meaning the rebel flag, and the entire Confederate romance associated with it.
I am not from here. For that reason, I find it difficult to dismiss the entire ......uh.....local "myth-cycle" of the Confederacy... as a load of irrelevant claptrap and hatred. This is the way these people were raised. I don't like to dis it.
So I decided to try my hand at the game.
I said, "Yeah, and you know your senator is taking shit behind that. The Sons of Confederate Veterans just took George Allen out to the woodshed for just that reason; he used the Confederate flag as a political football."
Boy, did I ever open a floodgate. This good ole boy went OFF. Just absolutely was livid about how every time Felix opens his mouth, he digs himself deeper. It was a major macaca megamoment.
My new acquaintance ranted on for a while (with my encouragement) and concluded with, "This guy (Allen) had my vote froom the start. I was behind that guy 100%. But not now. He LOST my vote. I'm voting for the other guy."
This dude was pissed to kill. And hearing that made me feel great.
I've got a very good feeling about this. Betweem the guy joining me for a smoke, to the high school teacher wanting to make a statement about how this administration has bungled the war on terror, to the winger that ran scared when I hit him with facts, I have a good feeling about this.
Make it better.
When you show Jim Webb some love, make sure you tack that penny onto the even-dollar amount so they know it's from the netroots.
And hit Schumer up, and tell him to kick us down some down here.
Let's git 'r' done.
(The gun show continues tomorrow at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds.)

told me I'm scary-looking.
I'm hurt.

Is Your Vacation (Mark - 9/30/2006 8:35:14 PM)
over yet? Or did I lose track of time?

Yep. (kestrel9000 - 10/1/2006 2:15:30 AM)
Went back to work on Monday. :) Why am I still burned out?

Awesome... (Loudoun County Dem - 9/30/2006 7:23:42 PM)
...I especially like Todd Smyth's display, it is very effective.

How was the Allen display? (Eric - 9/30/2006 7:34:53 PM)
I can just see a bit of it in the first pic.  Was the Webb display better?  Had more volunteers?  Better reception from the crowd?

Allen. (kestrel9000 - 10/1/2006 2:12:22 AM)
had a youngish kid there (maybe one of the College Republicans) who seemed pretty lonely, as well as another gun vendor type working the booth, and that's about it. Not much going on there. About the only thing they had that we didn't seemed to be ice water (in imprinted plastic cups), and I didn't see any takers for that. Looked pretty slow.....

Does anyone plan to have a Webb table... (Loudoun County Dem - 10/1/2006 2:54:21 PM)
...at the Chantilly Militaria Show on October 13, 14 & 15? This would seem to be a natural constituency for Webb and it is close enough that some of us in Loudoun County or NOVA could help out.

If nobody has a table lined up I would be interested in getting one if we could get some volunteers to help man it at some time during the weekend (and a banner and Todd Smyth's Webb Bio, I could bring a laptop to loop videos of Webb, especially the long form one).

Any interest?

kestrel9000, Did you set this up and if so where did you get the supplies (banner etc.)?

No, (kestrel9000 - 10/1/2006 4:08:50 PM)
I didn't set it up. I got an email from Sportsmen for Webb saying they'd be there. I just decided to run down there with a camera and blog it.

Thanks... (Loudoun County Dem - 10/1/2006 4:49:24 PM)
...Do you know if Sportsmen for Webb are planning on being in Chantilly?

no idea (kestrel9000 - 10/1/2006 10:27:58 PM)
their email, I think: Sportsmenforwebb@verizon.net

Scary? (Bubby - 10/1/2006 4:24:00 PM)
Things can get a little PC over at DK.

Thanks to Todd for standing this thing up. Sorry I missed it.
