Allen used the "N-word" in college?

Salon is reporting that Sen. Allen frequently used the "N-word" in college.

From the article:

"Allen said he came to Virginia because he wanted to play football in a place where 'blacks knew their place,'" said Dr. Ken Shelton, a white radiologist in North Carolina who played tight end for the University of Virginia football team when Allen was quarterback. "He used the N-word on a regular basis back then."

A second white teammate, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he feared retribution from the Allen campaign, separately claimed that Allen used the word "nigger" to describe blacks. "It was so common with George when he was among his white friends. This is the terminology he used," the teammate said.

A third white teammate contacted separately, who also spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of being attacked by the Virginia senator, said he too remembers Allen using the word "nigger," though he said he could not recall a specific conversation in which Allen used the term. "My impression of him was that he was a racist," the third teammate said.

Now if one former teammate was making these claims, someone might could argue it was a coincidence.  Maybe an old axe to grind? But, three of them?

I am sure Sen. Allen will claim that he did not know what the word meant, or that he thought it meant buffoon, or maybe it had something to do with his fellow teammateGÇÖs hair styles.  Only time will tell what kind of excuses Sen. Allen will use this time.  Stay tuned GǪ..

Suggested Strategy to Reach the Media (bb10 - 9/24/2006 10:54:10 PM)
Here's a recommednation on a strategy to quickly reach a large number of reporters who might be interested in this story:

1) Go to Google News and do a search for these three words: George, Allen, macaca

2) Look over the search results and then go to the stories

3) For each story, look for the contact information for the reporter (email and/or telephone number)

4) If you can find an email address, just copy it, and go to the Salon.com piece and use their Web form to email the reporter the story

5) In your email or telephone message, just leave a short, polite message

6) Wait several days and see if the papers you sent the Salon.com piece do a story. If not, do a letter to the editor.

Watch for the stories that are published. If the paper has a Comments function at the end of each news story, leave your thoughts.

Also call talk radio shows. And email the Salon.com piece to all your friends.

With everything else that Allen has done, this should cook his goose. Let's all work on preparing the "dinner."

The part about the stuffed deer head is equally damning (JennyE - 9/24/2006 10:23:59 PM)
Is Allen going to deny this story and or claim that Dr Shelton is lying? We're waiting to see.

The deer head in the mailbox really got to me (PM - 9/24/2006 10:25:38 PM)
Shelton said he also remembers a disturbing deer hunting trip with Allen on land that was owned by the family of Billy Lanahan, a wide receiver on the team. After they had killed a deer, Shelton said he remembers Allen asking Lanahan where the local black residents lived. Shelton said Allen then drove the three of them to that neighborhood with the severed head of the deer. "He proceeded to take the doe's head and stuff it into a mailbox," Shelton said.

Does he know? (Arturo - 9/24/2006 10:25:47 PM)
Does Allen's best friend, State Senator Benjamin Lambert know?

Americablog has it (PM - 9/24/2006 10:52:12 PM)
This, my friends, is a sad day, sad in that a person like Allen had this in him, sad that he was able to climb so far.

I hope Mr. Allen is able to seek appropriate help and cleanse himself of these ideas.

It's all making sense now, isn't it?  The reaction to Peggy Fox's question?  The adolescent brutality?

I predict there will be more stories like this.

The Allen Campaign......... (Ambivalent Mumblings - 9/24/2006 11:13:38 PM)
......will probably now claim that, once again, Allen didn't know what the word n***** meant, or that it was even a word. Now how could Allen have made up the word you ask.

Well, the only excuse I can think of it is that it is similar to the Spanish word for black......."negro." Now all the rational people out there are thinking..... oh my AM, Allen would have to be really idiotic to use that excuse. But, let's think about it. While defending his decision to welcome S.R. Sidarth to America, Allen claimed that he simply made up the inappropriate word he used and claimed it was simply a play on the word mohawk. Somehow that is completely moronic as well. He just happened to come up with a definable word that is extremely offensive to many people.

Well, if he was idiotic enough to use a play on words as a defense earlier, why wouldn’t he do it again? And we all know that he has no problem insulting his heritage. After all, he did flat out lie about knowing his mother was Jewish during the debate at the Fairfax Chamber of Congress. So he probably figured, hey I already stood of for my Spanish heritage, I probably should insult it now so that people don't think I'm singling out a certain group with my descrimination.

Just as a reminder, here's what he said during the debate.

"My mother is French-Italian with a little Spanish blood in her," Allen told the panelist. He said he had been raised as a Christian and made no mention of any Jewish heritage.
Now let's just sit and wait for all of the Allen supporters to start claiming that the lefty blogs are insulting Allen for trying to equally distribute the descrimination to every possible culture.

Who wants to bet? (DanG - 9/24/2006 11:23:47 PM)
Who wants to bet that Allen and his A-Team are having a "late night think-tank" right now to figure out how to wiggle out of this one?  Wait until the MSM picks this up an gets the interview with the good doctor.

Some people think.... (vote-left - 9/24/2006 11:27:10 PM)
...that the people in this article will be swiftboated.  I disagree.

Allen takes two diametrically opposed positions.  He admits to his historical defiant - racist - behavior, occurring as recently as when he was governor.  At the same time, he argues that he grew up in a football family around famous players such as Deacon Jones and therefore he can't be racist.

The fact is, Allen cannot simultaneously embrace both of those positions.

Either:

--Allen had the noose hanging in his office
--Allen had confederate flags and confederate lapel pens
--Allen signed a resolution acknowledging Confederate history month without mentioning the suffering caused by slavery
--Allen called Sidarth "macaca" and said "welcome to Virginia" and "welcome to the real world"
--Allen called black football players the *N* word

and Allen is just an all around swell guy with no racial bias

Or:

The way I see it, is that Allen walks like a duck, talks like a duck and his claim about growing up in a football family is simply one smelly more trail of sh*t he leaves behind himself...

Allen cannot run from reality.  With Allen's undeniable history, I don't see how swiftboating can work here.  Allen is a blatant racist.

After denying he was Jewish, Allen came out and admitted it.  I do not see that happening here.  Allen has consistently denied his racism for a long time.  What does he do, a mia culpa tomorrow admitting he is now a racist?

Then it will be, "Is this something you recently learned through your heritage?"  And, "How long ago did you discover you were a racist?"

Allen should waddle, but fast, to some underground bunker until after the election.

Allen will (libra - 9/25/2006 12:38:01 AM)
make history as the Guiness Book of Records' *first ever* "white toast"...

Conspiracy Theory (AERO - 9/25/2006 12:48:25 AM)
Remember how Bush got by the the AWOL charges?  They found a way to discredit the reporters and shift the focus of the story.  What if this is a setup, where these sources make this shocking allegation, then later recant after the media takes the ball and runs with it.  Allen ends up looking like a victim of false charges of racism.  Then everybody forgets about Macaca for good.  I just don't trust the Rovian tactics of these guys.  Trickery and deceit is all that Allen has left.

Let us not forget.... (bladerunner - 9/25/2006 8:52:31 AM)
that the Felix Allen camp is very clever indeed. Without proof this is not going to fly. The media will give Felix every benefit of the doubt--as they should in a case this serious.

Also remember that the Allen campaign will be throwing some BS lies out there to try to neutralize this. And that's what the GOP does so well, when they get trumped they aim to neutralize.

That being said with Allen's background this doesn't surprise me--what is a little surprising is it took so damn long to come out.

Allen is a Liar! (vote-left - 9/25/2006 12:16:58 PM)
Mike Stark (callingallwingnuts.com) asked Allen if he had ever used the *N* word, and Allen stated "No."

Stark: Have you ever used the word ‘nigger’?â€

Allen: “Oh, c’mon… sheesh…â€

Campaign staff: “Who are you - I need to ask you to leave…â€

Stark: “it’s a simple question that deserves an answer - and it’s easy to answerâ€

Allen: “no… no…â€

Stark: “Well, can you explain why you kept a confederate flag and a noose in your office?â€

Allen rejects claims he used N word Washington Post (Jeff B - 9/25/2006 2:30:29 PM)
Sen. Allen Denies Using Racial Slur

By BOB LEWIS
The Associated Press
Monday, September 25, 2006; 2:24 PM

RICHMOND, Va. -- Sen. George Allen on Monday denounced as "ludicrously false" claims from a former college football teammate that he frequently used a racial slur to refer to black people.

Dr. Ken Shelton, now a radiologist in Hendersonville, N.C., also alleges that Allen, a former University of Virginia quarterback, once stuffed the severed head of a deer into a black household's oversized mail box.

Allen claims he never used the word. (Eric - 9/25/2006 2:43:07 PM)
He's taking a big risk with that statement.  Does he really believe that other people from his past aren't going to come out of the woodwork?

Then he's going to caught up in whether or not he said it AND if he lied to cover it up.  Enough people from his past come out then the public will believe he said it.  If they believe he said the word then they will know he lied.

Wow.

Good point Eric..... (bladerunner - 9/25/2006 3:24:07 PM)
If he's used it over the years, and with his background it wouldn't surprise me one bit, someone should come out.

I have read the defense (Newport News Dem - 9/25/2006 4:23:33 PM)
Allen's campaign brought forth others to discredit the charge, along with the mandatory discrediting of Shelton, creating a he said/she said. This is appropriate from them.

Where the Allenistas piss me off is linking this to Webb in an overt campaign smear against Allen by Webb. I challenge anyone to back up these contemptible lies. Bring forth one piece of evidence that Webb is behind the Salon story......

I wait for the evidence or retract this scurrilous charge!
