VA-Sen - Jim Webb's Navy Cross Citation

While George Allen was busy vandalizing his own High School, knocking down mail boxes and dragging his sister around by her hair, Jim Webb was literally knee deep in the rice paddies of Vietnam putting his life on the line for his country and showing true leadership and courage.  In addition to the Navy Cross, Jim Webb earned the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts, while fighting for his country.

As a prot+¬g+¬ of Karl Rove, George Allen's campaign manager, Dick Wadhams is desperately trying to paint Jim Webb as nothing more than a "fiction" writer because Jim Webb's reality is too much for them to handle.  Below will give you just a sense of the dedication, courage, honor and leadership of Jim Webb.  It is the factual citation written by the US Navy about the actions taken by Jim Webb, which earned him the Navy's highest honor.

I have to admit that when I first read this, a small part of me was imagining Jim Webb doing this in the halls of congress rather than a battlefield in Vietnam but I'll settle for Webb standing up to executive abuse and the decay of checks and balances.

Jim Webb's Navy Cross Citation:

Jim Webb, First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps
Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division (Rein.) FMF
Date of Action: July 10, 1969

The Navy Cross is presented to James H. Webb, Jr., First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 10 July 1969, while participating in a company-sized search and destroy operation deep in hostile territory, First Lieutenant Webb's platoon discovered a well-camouflaged bunker complex which appeared to be unoccupied. Deploying his men into defensive positions, First Lieutenant Webb was advancing to the first bunker when three enemy soldiers armed with hand grenades jumped out. Reacting instantly, he grabbed the closest man and, brandishing his .45 caliber pistol at the others, apprehended all three of the soldiers. Accompanied by one of his men, he then approached the second bunker and called for the enemy to surrender. When the hostile soldiers failed to answer him and threw a grenade which detonated dangerously close to him, First Lieutenant Webb detonated a claymore mine in the bunker aperture, accounting for two enemy casualties and disclosing the entrance to a tunnel. Despite the smoke and debris from the explosion and the possibility of enemy soldiers hiding in the tunnel, he then conducted a thorough search which yielded several items of equipment and numerous documents containing valuable intelligence data. Continuing the assault, he approached a third bunker and was preparing to fire into it when the enemy threw another grenade. Observing the grenade land dangerously close to his companion, First Lieutenant Webb simultaneously fired his weapon at the enemy, pushed the Marine away from the grenade, and shielded him from the explosion with his own body. Although sustaining painful fragmentation wounds from the explosion, he managed to throw a grenade into the aperture and completely destroy the remaining bunker. By his courage, aggressive leadership, and selfless devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Webb upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Dick Wadhams knows he has an empty suit (blank canvas) for a candidate in George Allen.  He has nothing really good in his record to point to so he has to take credit for things other people have done and talk about all the things he might do if he were elected US Senator despite the fact he has forgotten he was supposed to be working as our US Senator for the past 5 and a half years.

Governor Mark Warner left office with an 80% approval rating because he did such a phenomenal job of turning around the financial disaster left behind by Jim Gilmore and George Allen.  And so, George Allen is taking credit for Mark Warner's more recent accomplishments.  George Allen recently stole a Department of Defense appropriations amendment written, printed and prepared by Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill), and then announced the amendment as his own, moments before Durbin was prepared to introduce the amendment on the Senate floor.

Don't be fooled by George Allen's campaign of deception and attack ads.  They're objective is to suppress people from coming out to volunteer and vote for a real candidate like Jim Webb while they are quietly organizing their base of clueless and frightened drones to go to the polls over gay marriage, abortion and anything else they can use to scare people into voting against their own interests.  Please come out and volunteer and help us get as many people as possible to the polls this November and get a true American hero elected as our next Senator from Virginia.

dick, running on lies.. (drmontoya - 9/22/2006 11:17:20 AM)
If Dick Wad and the Allen campaign actually ran an honest open campaign on the issues.

Allen wouldn't be in a "dead heat"

He'd be dead, politically.

Nice Washington Examiner Story Today (PM - 9/22/2006 12:23:13 PM)

[the actual article]

The gist of the article is that Webb is becoming a better campaigner (less wonky), and talking about his military experience and his own Virginia heritage.

Rice Paddy Veterans for Lies (Curlew - 9/22/2006 8:13:21 PM)
Has anyone started taking bets on when a group called something like the "Rice Paddy Veterans for Lies" will start Swiftboating Jim?  Given how they went ballistic in their discrediting of John Kerry in 2004, you'd think the Swift Boaters would regroup, change habitats from a river to a rice paddy, and start to question how Jim won his medals.  After all they are "compassionate" conservatives. Could we expect any less from them?

My guess is that on Columbus Day we'll see and hear the first Rice Paddy Veterans for Lies advertisement. Some guy who left Nam the day Jim arrived will be on the air telling about how "i served with Jim Webb and he's lying."  Just watch.

It must really suck to be a Repugnican supporter.
