Jim Webb, Mark Warner, Don Beyer and Harris Miller

Tonight at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Jim Webb joined over 500 of his friends, including former Governor Mark Warner, former Lt. Governor Don Beyer, and former Democratic Senate candidate Harris Miller.  It was a great night, successful on many levels - financial, political, social, etc.

For now, I'll just briefly say that this night - especially coming after last night's amazing event with Sen. Barack Obama, Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, Rep. Jim Moran, and many others - demonstrated the unity of the Democratic Party against against the George Allen and George Bush, Dick Wadhams and Karl Rove Republicans.

As Don Beyer said, now is the time for "strength and unity behind Jim Webb."  As Harris Miller said, it's now time to "unite" and to "focus on real solutions for real Virginians."  (Miller added, "I'm proud to be supporting Jim Webb for U.S. Senate!").  And as Mark Warner said, electing Jim Webb "is about getting our country and the U.S. Senate back."

I'll have more later, but for now, see the "flip" for more photos.  Thanks, and onward to victory on November 7!

P.S. One more important note - Jim Webb apologized for the mailer during the primary that caricatured Harris Miller, saying that there was no anti-Semitic intention in it, but nonetheless that "it was one of the great mistakes in the primary."  Webb added that he was very sorry for it and that he took responsbility.

Good coverage on Channel 9 News at 7 (Greg - 9/21/2006 9:30:25 PM)
Don't have a link, but they ran it as their lead story, with some good footage of Mark Warner and Harris Miller.

I appreciate (very much!) that Harris Miller was willing to talk on camera about the 'campaign flyer' that Dick Wadhams keeps mentioning -- debunking Wadhams take on it, and pointing out that the Webb campaign withdrew it very quickly.

didn't watch... (littlepunk - 9/22/2006 12:52:25 AM)
...the news but it sounds like a pretty good event.  agree with lowell about the unity, and especially on back to back nights.

as a republican, it's much nicer to read blog posts like this one that are very positive where everybody is in good spirits.  congrats on the solid event.

Way to go Harris! (DanG - 9/21/2006 9:33:24 PM)
It's about time that Harris stood up for Webb.  With all these charges of anti-Semitism, charges that HARRIS MILLER created, it's about time he stood up to that promise he made.  Thank you, Harris Miller.

I agree. THANK YOU Harris Miller! (Lowell - 9/21/2006 9:56:29 PM)
I shook his hand and thanked him in person for coming to the fundraiser for Jim Webb tonight.  Josh talked to him for a while too.  Bottom line: we are all united against George "Bush" Allen and plan to have a great victory party on the night of November 7!

Miller was funny (Ingrid - 9/21/2006 10:58:23 PM)
Harris Miller even cracked a joke regarding the Senator's latest issue.  I found all the speakers tonight extremely upbeat, and Jim was at his best: extemporaneous remarks, not too many uhmmm's, very comfortable, very optimistic about the campaign.  I believe we will win!

Just glad to know (DanG - 9/21/2006 11:25:06 PM)
That he's still on our side with the whole anti-Semitic thing going on right now.

"The whole anti-Semitic thing" (Lowell - 9/22/2006 5:02:26 AM)
...is simply a creation of Dick Wadhams' warped and increasingly desperate mind.  Nobody - I repeat, NOBODY! - on the Webb campaign, at least nobody with whom I've ever talked, is anti-Semitic or would ever "Jew bait," to use that ugly term the Allen supporters like to bandy about.  The fact that the Allen supporters are accusing the Webb camp of this, even though Harris Miller and Jim Webb are now completely on the same page, demonstrates once again that they will say or do ANYTHING - lies, lies, and more lies - to get elected.  Frankly, the Allen camp's accuaations - largely against Jews! - of "Jew baiting" should, in and of themselves, disqualify Allen from higher office.  And right before the Jewish High Holidays, no less.  The Allen camp is being about as insulting and despicable as it can be, unless it were to promote a Swift Boating ad against Jim Webb, that is.  Whoops, I believe Allen's supporters are doing that too!  Disgusting.

But, this even bigger than Wadhams waist size.... (I'm big too) (Used2Bneutral - 9/22/2006 5:51:25 AM)

Lowell,
They really have no choice. The Republican campaigns have to engage on BS like this, because on the major issues and topics they have no justifiable or supportable position about their mistakes and the worst most blatent corruption I have ever seen in the 37 years I have been working with Federal business since college.  They have only personal dirt to throw..... and you know what, the only defense we have is bury them in facts, call them on the lies and distortions, and in many cases have to rely on the main stream media to "out" the bad guys.  But they can only do this when we supply them the facts with no spin and our own opinions suppressed so they can trust our claims and information.  Since these activities are generally one sided as the investigative WP article I included shows, they get to whine that it is just further left wing liberal persecution......

I really think that we have not yet seen but a tip of the iceberg on the ugliest campaign season that I have ever lived through since I started voting in '69.....  These kinds of lies, intentional distortions, and out-right voter suppressions should prosecuted as felonies !!!! They take away or suppress our basic rights that our kids are dying to protect for us and others.

George Allen has said... (Lowell - 9/22/2006 6:05:24 AM)
"the people who have had influence on my life [included] the cow boss that I buckarooed for on a ranch near Winnemucca, Nevada. That was good: you just made your own rules, made your own laws there, you could do anything you wanted to do, really, and easily get away with it because there were no witnesses."

That pretty much sums up the attitude of George Allen and the entire Allen campaign; they will do whatever they can get away with.  Luckily, this time - in the age of the bright spotlight known as the "blogosphere" - there will almost certainly be witnesses.  Still, I'm sure they'll keep trying to "make their own laws."

Way To FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (kevinceckowski - 9/22/2006 9:45:07 AM)
We had the time of our life with Jim, his wife, Governor Mark Warner, Don Beyer, and a super speech by Harris Miller. As Jim and Mark said, we have not seen the last of Don or Harris.  What great speeches and the energy in the room was electric.  Sooooooooooo many smiles.  We chanted GO JIM GO !!! and the room quaked.  Truly a night to remember in Virginia Democratic politics.

Very very good. (PM - 9/21/2006 9:48:27 PM)
By the way, I've seen pictures of the group that met in the White House to discuss the interrogation compromise.  (No one is sure of the details yet, and I remain skeptical, but we'll see.)  But I did not notice George "I'll be a bridge" Allen in the picture.  Anyone else see or her about "I'll be a bridge" Allen?

I'm glad it went well (teacherken - 9/21/2006 9:56:30 PM)
and it is especially good to see the support from Beyer and Miller.

Wish I could have been there, but besides being more than a little tapped out from supporting Jim already (I am but a poor school teacher) I did not get off the soccer field until a bit after 6 PM, and somehow I do not think my being in sweaty clothes (I did work out a bit with the players) would have been appropriate for the venue!

Now, I have no inside information for what I am about to offer, but somehow I am beginning to get the sense that the reported fundraising numbers on October 15 will be a lot better than people were originally predicting.  We get bits and drabs -- a tripling of contributions after macaca, 130,000 online after Meet the Press, 400 people tonight.  I presume that Webb is marshalling his resources to run full blast for last 3+ weeks.  He has been fortunate that the stupidity of Allen and his campaign has given Webb a huge amount of free publicity, or even better, free negative focus on Allen.

My JV soccer season ends about Occtober 25 -- although I do assist with varsity for state playoffs, methinks helping in the final two weeks of the campaign might be a greater priority this year.

Glad to see you out again Harris (Gordie - 9/21/2006 10:32:25 PM)
Met Harris at the 5th Caucus in Buckinham and then in Charlottesville when he promised to back Webb. Had not heard from him in awhile but am glad to hear he is ready to fill his promise to support Jim.
Welcome back Harris, hope to hear more about you.
