According to a new poll by SurveyUSA, released yesterday, George W. Bush is not - I repeat NOT! - popular in Virginia.  I know this is shocking, but there it is.  Let's review.

Bush is unpopular overall (41% approve, 57% disapprove).  Bush is unpopular among men (45%/52%) and women (37%/61%).  Bush is unpopular among 18-34 year olds (34%/60%) and among the 55+ set (44%/55%).  Bush is unpopular among African Americans (16%/80%), Latinos (30%/57%), and whites (48%/50%).  Bush is wildly unpopular among Democrats (10%/89%) and very unpopular among independents (34%/64%).  Bush is unpopular in NOVA (34%/63%), in central Virginia (40%/60%), and in Shenandoah (42%/56%).  And Bush is unpopular among both liberals (13%/86%) and moderates (33%/65%).

So, who LIKES George W. Bush in Virginia?  Besides George "Bush Mini-Me" Allen, Bush fans include: Republicans (79%/17%), conservatives (74%/23%), and those who oppose abortion (66%/33%).  By very slight margins, Bush is also popular in southeastern Virginia (49%/45%) and among regular church-goers (51%/48%).  That's about it for Bush; he's popular with core Republicans and conservatives.  Everybody else disapproves of him, often by huge margins.

So what does all this say about the electoral prospects for George Allen, who has spent the past 6 years in the U.S. Senate voting nearly 100% of the time with George W. Bush?  Hmmm.

...for some reason made me laugh out loud.  The numbers obviously back up the assertion, but the obvious sarcasm in the headline I liked.

We need to continue identifying Allen with Bush until the Senate polls match Bush’s approval polls.  It ought to be Webb 57% Allen 41%.

I'll be happy (thegools - 9/20/2006 4:44:21 PM)
if it is just

50.00001% Webb
49.99999% Allen

I want an apology lowell (chiefsjen - 9/20/2006 10:53:19 AM)
that pic of bush made me spit out my soda -- please warn us first!!!

ya know, the 1 thing i was always so proud of being a Virginian was that our forefathers, some of the greatest Americans in history lived in Northern Va -- i've lived in a row house in old town that was built in the 1700's, the land i live on now was walked and rode upon by the likes of washington, jefferson, mason, etc.

i have lived almost my entire life down the street from the beautiful Mt. Vernon and spent countless hours as a teen travelling up and down the parkway.

What must our great Virginians thought as they looked across the potomac every single day -- I think now they would be outraged and ashamed that our country is what it is today and even more ashamed that Allen is the person (i won't use man) representing THE BEST STATE IN THE UNION!!!

Webb is a man I would be proud to be our representative and a man that is truly a great Virginian!!!

The young voter bracket... (Eric - 9/20/2006 11:10:57 AM)
interesting that this poll shows them decidedly against Bush, but the last two VA senate race polls by SurveyUSA showed the younger bracket pulling stronger for Allen than Webb.

What gives?  Are they missing the fact that Bush and Allen are tied at the hip?  Is one of the two polls off?  Any ideas - this just doesn't add up...
