The Tim Kaine kickoff event in Richmond was at the Children's Museum. The parking lot was packed and people were walking to the event, to get in the door. By around 8pm, there were around 350-400 people there. The event was scheduled to start at 7:30. While we all waited for Kaine, there was a fabulous funk band playing for the crowd. They played everything from My Boogie Shoes, to RollerCoaster of Love.

Kaine arrived a little after 9 PM, and the crowd went wild. Kaine had his children in tow, later mentioning that he loved the people they were growing up to be and that they were the most important people in his life. They all arrived on stage to "This is My Town" by Bruce Springsteen. (How appropriate!)

The first speaker was Kaine's father-in-law, the former (first) Virginian Republican Governor Linwood Holton. Holton said that "he was a Republican, and he is a Republican,"but that he knows he when to make the right decisions.

Mark Warner spoke next and talked about how Kaine has the "courage" to be the next Governor of Virginia. He highlighted Kaine's strengths and that Kaine would bring "Democrats and Republicans together" in the legislature. Warner also said that he would not give Kaine "the present" of the deficit that he was left with when he came into office. He then introduced Tim and "the next governor of Virginia."

When Kaine began to speak, he seemed truly moved by the amount of support shown by the city where he formerly served as Mayor.  Kaine highlighted the progress made in Virginia, in particular that in the past four years, tens of thousands of new jobs have been added in Richmond. In terms of what he would do as Governor, he talked about how his faith guided him, as evidenced by his service as Christian missionary.

Overall, the speech hit home with many middle of the roaders and conservative Richmonders, as well as diehard Kaine fans.
