The highly regarded Mason-Dixon pollsters did a survey for the Virginian-Pilot regarding whether Va. voters would like to see George Allen run for president, and whether they'd vote for him.  The dual answer: a resounding "no."  (Mark Warner got two thumbs up.)
The prospect of U.S. Sen. George Allen running for president in 2008 is losing its appeal to Virginia voters, a new poll shows.

Forty-nine percent said he shouldn't run and 37 percent said he should, according to a survey of 625 registered voters conducted Sept. 5 through Thursday. Asked whether they would consider voting for Allen for president, 52 percent said "no " and 39 percent said "yes." ...

[ADDED BY ROB] In contrast, the poll showed Virginians encouraging former Gov. Mark Warner's presidential ambitions. Fifty-four percent said the Democrat should seek the White Houe in 2008, 23 percent said he should not.  Asked whether they would consider casting their presidential vote for Warner, 56 percent said "yes" and 30 percent said "no."

Presidential Run...Not (bertholland - 9/12/2006 12:02:15 PM)
Why does Allen think that the George Bush "country boy" act will work again on a national level?

God, what better way to ask...Had enough yet?

I find that even my most conservative Repub friends are backing away for this carpetbagger.

Goodbye, presidential campaign! (David Campbell - 9/12/2006 1:33:49 PM)
I noticed a bit of snark creeping into the hallowed halls of the Virginian-Pilot:
"Allen has made repeated visits to crucial presidential primary and caucus states such as Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina...Dick Wadhams, Allen's Senate campaign manager and companion on many of the visits to key presidential primary states, brushed aside Virginian's dwindling appetite for Allen's national aspirations.  'Senator Allen is focused on running for and winning re-election to the Senate, and that's the only thing we're talking about,' he said."

Presidential runs (libra - 9/12/2006 9:46:15 PM)
Allen as a Presidential Possibility has been a Dead Duck from the word go; the field of wannabes there is to large to allow him even a squeaky peek (thoguh I have no objectionss to his wasting his money in that direction). That his chances have gotten even worse is irrelevant. I certainly won't waste my ulcer-potential worrying about *that* scenario...

What I find more interesting is the stagnant numbers for Mark Warner (a single point difference, over a year). Much as I liked  Gov. Warner, I was surprised to see him touted as a possible contender for the post. And I was amused rather than impressed by his endorment by the DKos; the blogosphere is a very important (and under-appreciated) factor in modern-day politics, but it's a long way from being the "alternative Decider" :)

I think Mark Warner is like Hillary Clinton; with all due (and it's *certainly due*) respect, they're non-starters in national stakes (if for different reasons). Either of them (and Barak Obama) might do well as a *vice presidential* runner, though.
