71% Would Be Far Less Likely to Support Allen in 2008

Even if George Allen does manage to scrape by a victory this fall against Jim Webb, who has been consistantly gaining on since the now infamous Macacagate, his chances of being the next President of the United States are totally gone.  I haven't seen this mentioned yet, so I figured I'd go ahead and emphasize it slightly.  American Polling Research recently did a poll on about 1,000 people to see how George Allen's recent "slip-of-the-tongue" has effected his Presidential ambitions.  The results were quite interesting:

"We asked registered voters: "Has Virginia Senator George Allen's use of the racial epithet 'macaca' made you far less likely to support him in a 2008 presidential run, slightly less likely to support him in a 2008 presidential run, or has it not changed your level of support for him?"

Far less likely to support in 2008 - 71%
Slightly less likely to support in 2008 - 18%
Hasn't changed support for 2008 - 3%"

Ouch.  Now that hurts.  Things just continue to get worse for Allen.  It seems only yesterday that insider polls were placing Allen at #1.  Now, if conservatives are looking for an alternative to McCain, they better start searching fast.  Allen's political star is fading fast, and that will only make it harder for Allen to get out the vote on November 7th.
On the bright side, Mark Warner polls 14% for the Democrats in this poll.  Ahead of him are Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, and Al Gore (who isn't running, yet people still insist on including him in these polls).
