"Blind faith in bad leaders is not patriotism"

Wow.  This is an amazing speech, delivered by Salt Lake City Mayor Ross C. "Rocky" Anderson to 2,500 people as President Bush visited Utah on August 30.  Here's a classic line:

A patriot does not tell people who are intensely concerned about their country to just sit down and be quiet; to refrain from speaking out in the name of politeness or for the sake of being a good host; to show slavish, blind obedience and deference to a dishonest, war-mongering, human-rights-violating President.

Here's another one:

We are here today to insist that our news media live up to its sacred responsibility to ascertain and report the truth - rather than acting like nothing more than a bulletin board for the lies and propaganda of a manipulative, dishonest federal government.

And just one more:

We are here to say, "We will not stand for it any more. No more lies. No more pre-emptive, illegal war, based on false information. No more God-is-on-our-side religious nonsense to justify this immoral, illegal war. No more inhumanity."

There are many other great lines, too numerous to list here.  My recommendation: watch the entire speech. In it, you will hear what a courageous truthteller has to say about the Bush Administration, its blind supporters, and their "lies and propaganda."  By the way, why can't ALL our politicians speak like this?

This sounds great (bladerunner - 9/3/2006 11:08:20 PM)
It's late I'll listen to it tomorrow, and look forward to it. I do hate it when you go against Bush and they say your not patriotice, that's such a crock. And they base all of their secrets on "National Security" excuse. Remember Bush the enforcer who can't admit mistakes.

Utah?? (Kindler - 9/3/2006 11:15:34 PM)
Isn't Utah considered the "reddest" state in America?

If Republicans are getting spanked like this in their own back yard, then they are in an even more desperate situation than I thought...

RE: Utah (JPTERP - 9/3/2006 11:44:47 PM)
I know zilch about Utah demographics, but Wikipedia tells me that Salt Lake City is pretty liberal.  It is to Utah what Austin is to Texas.  The mayor is also considered liberal.  Still an incredibly event and great speech.

Rethink Utah (Bubby - 9/4/2006 9:59:43 AM)
And Salt Lake City in particular.  I still have a bumper sticker somewhere, "Eat, Drink, and Be Merry, for Tomorrow You May Be in Utah".  Not true in SLC.

Re: The News Media (JPTERP - 9/3/2006 11:36:36 PM)
"We are here today to insist that our news media live up to its sacred responsibility . . ." That's an incredible line from a politician.  Most politicos these days--especially on the right--love slamming the "media" as much as "activist judges".  There's a reason though that "Free Press" is in the First Ammendment.  (There's also a reason that we have an indepedent judiciary, but that's another topic).

Great speech. (summercat - 9/4/2006 8:35:06 AM)
We do need more articulate, tough and credible politicians to lay it on the line.  I have a feeling Jim Webb will be one.
On a lighter note, saw this on the Wes Clark Community blog today:
Things you have to believe to be a Republican today:
Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime,
unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an
illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.
The United States should get out of the United
Nations, and our highest national priority is
enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.
Government should relax regulation of Big Business
and Big Money but crack down on individuals who use
marijuana to relieve the pain of illness.
"Standing Tall for America'" means firing your
workers and moving their jobs to India.
A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her
own body, but, multi-national corporations can make
decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.
Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of
homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.
The best way to improve military morale is to praise
the troops in speeches while slashing veterans'
benefits and combat pay.
Group sex and drug use are degenerate sins unless
you someday run for governor of California as a
Republican.
If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents
won't have sex.
A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our
long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and
money.
HMOs and insurance companies have the interest of
the public at heart.
Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy.
Providing health care to all Americans is socialism.
Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk
science, but creationism should be taught in schools.
Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad
guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when
Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush
needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.
A president lying about an extramarital affair is an
impeachable offense. A president lying to enlist
support for a war in which thousands die is solid
defense policy.
Government should limit itself to the powers named
in the Constitution, which include banning gay
marriages and censoring the Internet.
The public has a right to know about Hillary's
cattle trades, but George Bush's driving record is
none of our business.
You support states' rights, which means Attorney
General John Ashcroft can tell states what local voter
initiatives they have a right to adopt.
What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital
national interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is
irrelevant.
Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is
communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital
to a spirit of international harmony.
Are you a Republican?

Wasn't Mayor Anderson Dis-invited? (Teddy - 9/4/2006 10:43:45 AM)
I heard that the American Legion dis-invited (i.e.,withdrew their invitation to) Mayor Anderson when they met in Salt Lake City--- where they did listen, I believe, to Rumsfeld, and cheered his Fascism speech.  So once again the alternate viewpoint is muzzled on a national stage.

What a contrast between Rummie and Ross! Rummie's ravings persuade me the man has really slipped his leash and is no longer rational but beyond borderline insane. I used, charitably, to consider the neocon leadership increasing neurotic but that's long since been bypassed--- go directly to psychotic.

We can look forward (if that's the word) to increasingly hysterical ravings of similar nature, going down the road of jingoist rage where ANY questioning or opposition, however minimal, especially of the President, is called unpatriotic, traitrous, and, finally, terrorist-linked. If this convinces 50.1 percent of the voters to vote the Republicans back into power--- or the Republicans subvert another election with impunity, it will not be past reason to expect to see domestic detention centers for those domestic persons, (that is, ordinary Americans) who express opposition, to be installed therein.  The Anerican concentration camp. Don't laugh, I'm serious.  I have been told the Pentagon let a $370 mill contract to build just such detention centers, supposedly for a " possible flood of refugees."  Another Halliburton deal, that.

Let's not meet their craziness with our own craziness (RayH - 9/5/2006 7:10:59 PM)

I'm quite curious about the Pentagon contract that you mentioned in the last paragraph, and hope to learn more about it.
