The potential for a military draft should be made an issue now.

Juan Cole makes the point this morning that the call up of 2500 marine reservists is one step closer to overextending the volunteer military and one step closer to reinstituting the draft.

I think this is something that should get more attention now, because there is, obviously, no way a draft will be instituted before the November 7th election. It would be political suicide for those in power. A draft would be the death knell of the remaining support for the war. That is why people need to be aware of the possibility now while they can still do something: vote...

I say bring it. (phriendlyjaime - 8/24/2006 1:24:11 PM)
Why?  Because every ignorant soccer mom with her teenage boys and her "freedom ain't free" bumper stickers would immediately switch parties.  Every young man and woman riding on the "But Bush is right!!!" slogan would quietly go Dem bc they have their sites set on frat houses and beer bongs and NOT Iraq.  So BRING IT.

BUT-this could also be very bad for those who probably already vote Dem.  Why?  well, I am damn sure that those "privilidged children" who have their sites set on sex and C- grades would somehow be left off the list, while every displaced Katrina victim would miraculously be drafted in droves.

A Fair Draft would be Fine (Nick Stump - 8/24/2006 2:59:23 PM)
I've always been in favor of a draft that didn't have any loopholes for the rich kids.  If's it's like Vietnam, we'll have the same brown, black and Appalachian soldiers dying all over again.  This time let's draft the Dick Cheneys of the country.  Now how he managed to get more deferrments after his college deferment, I'll never understand.  I was drafted after college and was refused a married with kids deferrment and the reason given to me at the time was the fact that I had already had a college deferrment.

Maybe they just figured I would look good in a uniform.

Right on, both of you. (tokatakiya - 8/24/2006 8:28:09 PM)
This issue needs to be made more public. People need to factor it into their decision making this November. Spread the word.

No draft. (loboforestal - 8/24/2006 8:41:17 PM)
Drafts should be reserved for civil wars and world wars.

Otherwise, pay the market rate.

But Gingrich sez we're in WWIII, making a draft more appropriate (RayH - 8/25/2006 9:13:34 AM)

You can say what you want about what we should do (tokatakiya - 8/25/2006 9:31:20 AM)
but the reality is: pull back the militaries foreign commitments or get ready for a draft.

Maybe Bush wants to save frozen embryos to make soldiers. (RayH - 8/25/2006 10:19:35 AM)
